Parable of the Vine-growers

1 aAnd He began° to speak° to them in parables°: bA man° cPLANTED° A VINEYARD° AND PUT° A IWALL° AROUND° IT, AND DUG° A VAT° UNDER° THE WINE° PRESS° AND BUILT° A TOWER°, and rented° it out to IIvine-growers° and went° on a journey°. 2 At the [harvest] time° he sent° a slave° to the vine-growers°, in order° to receive° [some] of the produce° of the vineyard° from the vine-growers°. 3 They took° him, and beat° him and sent° him away° empty-handed°. 4 Again° he sent° them another° slave°, and they wounded° him in the head°, and treated° him shamefully°. 5 And he sent° another°, and that one° they killed°; and [so with] many° others°, beating° some°° and killing° others°°. 6 He had° one° more° [to send], a beloved° son°; he sent° him last° [of all] to them, saying°, ‘They will respect° my son°.’ 7 But those° vine-growers° said° to one° another°, ‘This° is the heir°; come°, let us kill° him, and the inheritance° will be ours°!’ 8 They took° him, and killed° him and threw° him out of the vineyard°. 9 What° will the Iowner° of the vineyard° do°? In a parable of the vineyard let out to unthankful husbandmen, Christ foretelleth the reprobation of the Jews, and the calling of the Gentiles.

1 ¶ Andº he beganºª to speakºª unto themº byº parables.º A [certain] manº plantedºª a vineyard,º andº set¹ª an hedge aboutº² [it], andº diggedºª [a place for] the winefat,º andº builtºª a tower,º andº let¹ª it¹ outºª² to husbandmen,º andº went into a far country.ºª 2 Andº at the² seasonº he sentºª toº the² husbandmenº a servant,º thatº he might receiveºª fromº the² husbandmenº ofº the² fruitº of the² vineyard.º 3 Andº they² caughtºª [him], and beatºª him,º andº sent [him] awayºª empty.º 4 Andº againº he sentºª untoº themº anotherº servant;º and at himº they cast stones,ºª and wounded [him] in the head,ºª andº sent [him] awayºª shamefully handled.ºª 5 Andº againº he sentºª another;º and himº they killed,ºª andº many¹² others;º¹ beating² some,¹ª²² andº killing² some.¹ª² 6 Havingºª yetº thereforeº oneº son,º his¹² wellbeloved,º he sentºª himº alsoº lastº untoº them,º saying,ºª¹ They will reverenceºª myº son.º 7 Butº thoseº husbandmenº saidºª amongº themselves,º Thisº¹ isºª the² heir;º come,ºª let us killºª him,º andº the² inheritanceº shall beºª ours.º 8 Andº they tookºª him,º and killedºª [him], andº castºª [him] out² of¹ the² vineyard.º 9 Whatº shall¹ª thereforeº the² lordº of the² vineyardº do?ºª he will comeºª andº destroyºª the² husbandmen,º andº will giveºª the² vineyardº unto others.º 10 And have ye¹ª notº readºª thisº scripture;º The stoneº whichº the² buildersºª rejectedºª isº¹ª become¹² the² headº of the corner:º 11 Thisº wasºª the Lord's¹ doing,º¹ª² andº it isºª marvellousº inº our¹² eyes?º 12 Andº they soughtºª to lay hold¹ª on² him,º butº fearedºª the² people:º forº they knewºª thatº he had spokenºª the² parableº againstº them:º andº they leftºª him,º and went their way.ºª
