NASB — Isaiah 53 — KJV

The Suffering Servant

  1 aWho° has believed° our message°?
  And to whom° has the arm° of the LORD° been revealed°?
  2 For He grew° up before° Him like a atender° Ishoot°,
  And like a root° out of parched° ground°;
  He has bno° [stately] form° or majesty°
  That we should look° upon Him,
  Nor° appearance° that we should IIbe attracted° to Him.
  3 He was adespised° and forsaken° of men°,
  A man° of Isorrows° and bacquainted° with IIgrief°;
  And like one from whom men hide° their face°
  He was cdespised°, and we did not desteem° Him.

  And our IIsorrows° He carried°;
  Yet we ourselves° esteemed° Him stricken°,
  IIISmitten° of bGod°, and afflicted°.
  5 But He was Ipierced° through° for aour transgressions°,
  He was crushed° for bour iniquities°;
  The cchastening° for our IIwell-being° [fell] upon Him,

The prophet, complaining of incredulity, excuseth the scandal of the cross,

1 ¶ Who² hath believedºª our report?º and to² whom² is the armº of the LORDº revealed?ºª 2 For he shall grow upºª beforeº him as a tender plant,º and as a rootº out of a dryº ground:º² he hath no² formº nor² comeliness;º and when we shall seeºª him, [there is] no² beautyº that we should desireºª him. 3 He is despisedºª and rejectedº of men;º a manº of sorrows,º and acquaintedºª with grief:º and we hid² as it were¹ª [our] facesº from² him; he was despised,ºª and we esteemedºª him not.²

by the benefit of his passion,

4 ¶ Surelyº he² hath borneºª our griefs,º and carriedºª our sorrows:º yet we² did esteemºª him stricken,ºª smittenºª of God,º and afflicted.ºª 5 But he² [was] woundedºª for our transgressions,º² [he was] bruisedºª for our iniquities:º² the chastisementº of our peaceº [was] upon² him; and with his stripesº we are healed.ºª 6 All² we like sheepº have gone astray;ºª we have turnedºª every oneº to his own way;º and the LORDº hath laidºª on him² the iniquityº of us all.² 7 He was oppressed,ºª and he² was afflicted,ºª yet he openedºª not² his mouth:º he is broughtºª as a lambº to the slaughter,º and as a sheepº beforeº her shearersºª is dumb,ºª so he openethºª not² his mouth.º 8 He was takenºª from prisonº² and from judgment:º² and who² shall declareºª his generation?º for² he was cut offºª out of the landº² of the living:º for the transgressionº² of my peopleº was he stricken.º 9 And he madeºª his graveº with² the wicked,º and with² the richº in his death;º because² he had doneºª no² violence,º neither² [was any] deceitº in his mouth.º
