Isaac blesseth Jacob, and sendeth him to Padan-aram.

1 ¶ And Isaacº calledºª² Jacob,º and blessedºª him, and chargedºª him, and saidºª unto him, Thou shalt not² takeºª a wifeº of the daughtersº² of Canaan.º 2 Arise,ºª go¹ª² to Padanaram,º to the houseº of Bethuelº thy mother'sº father;º and takeºª thee a wifeº from thence²² of the daughtersº² of Labanº thy mother'sº brother.º 3 And Godº Almightyº blessºª thee, and make thee fruitful,ºª and multiplyºª thee, that thou mayest be² a multitudeº of people;º 4 And giveºª thee² the blessingº of Abraham,º to thee, and to thy seedº with² thee; that thou mayest inheritºª² the landº wherein thou art a stranger,º which² Godº gaveºª unto Abraham.º 5 And Isaacº sent awayºª² Jacob:º and he went¹ª² to Padanaramº unto² Laban,º sonº of Bethuelº the Syrian,º the brotherº of Rebekah,º Jacob'sº and Esau'sº mother.º

6 ¶ When Esauº sawºª that² Isaacº had blessedºª² Jacob,º and sent him awayºª² to Padanaram,º to takeºª him a wifeº from thence;²² and that as he blessedºª him he gave him a charge,ºª² saying,ºª Thou shalt not² takeºª a wifeº of the daughtersº² of Canaan;º 7 And that Jacobº obeyedºª² his fatherº and his mother,º and was gone¹ª² to Padanaram;º 8 And Esauº seeingºª that² the daughtersº of Canaanº pleased¹ notº² Isaacº his father;º 9 Then went¹ª² Esauº unto² Ishmael,º and tookºª unto² the wivesº which he had² Mahalathº the daughterº of Ishmaelº Abraham'sº son,º the sisterº of Nebajoth,º to be his wife.º

10 ¶ And Jacobº went outºª from Beersheba,º² and went¹ª² toward Haran.º 11 And he lightedºª upon a certain place,º and tarried there all night,ºª² because² the sunº was set;ºª and he tookºª of the stonesº² of that place,º and putºª [them for] his pillows,º and lay downºª in that² placeº to sleep.¹ª 12 And he dreamed,ºª and behold² a ladderº set upºª on the earth,º and the top² of it¹ reachedºª to heaven:º and behold² the angelsº of Godº ascendingºª and descendingºª on it. 13 And, behold,² the LORDº stoodºª above² it, and said,ºª I² [am] the LORDº Godº of Abrahamº thy father,º and the Godº of Isaac:º the landº whereon²² thou² liest,ºª to thee will I give² it,¹ª and to thy seed;º 14 And thy seedº shall be² as the dustº of the earth,º and thou shalt spread abroadºª to the west,º and to the east,º and to the north,º and to the south:º and in thee and in thy seedº shall all² the familiesº of the earthº be blessed.ºª 15 And, behold,² I² [am] with² thee, and will keepºª thee in all² [places] whitherº thou goest,¹ª² and will bring thee againºª into² this² land;º for² I will not² leaveºª thee, untilº²² I have doneºª² [that] which² I have spokenºª to thee of.

16 ¶ And Jacobº awakedºª out of his sleep,º² and he said,ºª Surelyº the LORDº isº in this² place;º and I² knewºª [it] not.² 17 And he was afraid,ºª and said,ºª How² dreadfulºª [is] this² place!º this² [is] none² other but²² the houseº of God,º and this² [is] the gateº of heaven.º

18 And Jacobº rose up earlyºª in the morning,º and tookºª² the stoneº that² he had putºª [for] his pillows,º and set it upºª² [for] a pillar,º and pouredºª oilº upon² the top² of it.¹ 19 And he calledºª² the nameº of that² placeº Bethel:º butº the nameº of that cityº [was called] Luzº at the first.º

Jacob's vow.

20 And Jacobº vowedºª a vow,º saying,ºª If² Godº will be² with² me, and will keep² me¹ª in this² wayº that² I² go,ºª and will giveºª me breadº to eat,ºª and raimentº to put on,ºª 21 So that I come againºª to² my father'sº houseº in peace;º then shall the LORDº be² my God:º 22 And this² stone,º which² I have setºª [for] a pillar,º shall be² God'sº house:º and of all² that² thou shalt giveºª me I will surely¹ª give the tenthºª unto thee.
