Israel with some loss destroy the Canaanites at Hormah.

1 ¶ And [when] kingº Aradº the Canaanite,º which dweltºª in the south,º heard¹ª tell² that² Israelº cameºª by the wayº of the spies;º then he foughtºª against Israel,º and tookºª [some] of² them prisoners.º 2 And Israelº vowedºª a vowº unto the LORD,º and said,ºª If² thou wilt indeed¹ª deliverºª² this² peopleº into my hand,º then I will utterly destroyºª² their cities.º 3 And the LORDº hearkenedºª to the voiceº of Israel,º and delivered upºª² the Canaanites;º and they utterly destroyedºª them and their cities:º and he calledºª the nameº of the placeº Hormah.º

The people murmuring are plagued with fiery serpents.

4 ¶ And they journeyedºª from mountº Horº² by the wayº of the Redº sea,º to compassºª² the landº of Edom:º and the soulº of the peopleº was much discouragedºª because of the way.º 5 And the peopleº spakeºª against God,º and against Moses,º Wherefore² have ye brought us upºª out of Egyptº² to dieºª in the wilderness?º for² [there is] no² bread,º neither² [is there any] water;º and our soulº loathethºª this lightº bread.º 6 And the LORDº sentºª² fieryº serpentsº among the people,º and they bitºª² the people;º and muchº peopleº of Israelº² died.ºª

They repenting are healed by a brasen serpent.

7 ¶ Therefore the peopleº cameºª to² Moses,º and said,ºª We have sinned,ºª for² we have spokenºª against the LORD,º and against thee; prayºª unto² the LORD,º that he take awayºª² the serpentsº from²² us. And Mosesº prayedºª for² the people.º 8 And the LORDº saidºª unto² Moses,º Makeºª thee a fiery serpent,º and setºª it upon² a pole:º and it shall come to pass,² that every one² that is bitten,ºª when he looketh¹ª upon² it, shall live.ºª 9 And Mosesº madeºª a serpentº of brass,º and putºª it upon² a pole,º and it came to pass,² that if² a serpentº had bittenºª² any man,º when he beheldºª² the serpentº of brass,º he lived.ºª

Sundry journeys of the Israelites.

10 ¶ And the childrenº of Israelº set forward,ºª and pitchedºª in Oboth.º 11 And they journeyedºª from Oboth,º² and pitchedºª at Ijeabarim,º in the wildernessº which² [is] beforeº² Moab,º toward the sunrising.ºº²

12 ¶ From thence²² they removed,ºª and pitchedºª in the valleyº of Zared.º 13 From thence²² they removed,ºª and pitchedºª on the other sideº² of Arnon,º which² [is] in the wildernessº that cometh outºª of the coastsº² of the Amorites:º for² Arnonº [is] the borderº of Moab,º between² Moabº and the Amorites.º 14 Wherefore²² it is saidºª in the bookº of the warsº of the LORD,º² What he didº in the Red sea,º and in the brooksº of Arnon,º 15 And at the streamº of the brooksº that² goeth downºª to the dwelling¹ª² of Ar,º and liethºª upon the borderº of Moab.º 16 And from thence²² [they went] to Beer:º that² [is] the wellº whereof² the LORDº spakeºª unto Moses,º Gather¹ª the people¹ together,ºª²² and I will giveºª them water.º

17 ¶ Then² Israelº sangºª² this² song,º Spring up,ºª O well;º singºª ye unto it: 18 The princesº diggedºª the well,º the noblesº of the peopleº diggedºª it, by [the direction of] the lawgiver,ºª with their staves.º And from the wildernessº² [they went] to Mattanah:º 19 And from Mattanahº² to Nahaliel:º and from Nahalielº² to Bamoth:º 20 And from Bamothº² [in] the valley,º that² [is] in the countryº of Moab,º to the topº of Pisgah,º which lookethºª towardº² Jeshimon.º

Sihon is overcome,

21 ¶ And Israelº sentºª messengersº unto² Sihonº kingº of the Amorites,º saying,ºª 22 Let me passºª through thy land:º we will not² turnºª into the fields,º or into the vineyards;º we will not² drinkºª [of] the watersº of the well:º [but] we will go along¹ª² by the king'sº [high] way,º until²² we be pastºª thy borders.º 23 And Sihonº would not² sufferºª² Israelº to passºª through his border:º but Sihonº gathered¹ª all his people¹ together,ºª²²² and went outºª againstºª Israelº into the wilderness:º and he cameºª to Jahaz,º and foughtºª against Israel.º 24 And Israelº smoteºª him with the edgeº of the sword,º and possessedºª² his landº from Arnonº² unto² Jabbok,º even unto² the childrenº of Ammon:º for² the borderº of the childrenº of Ammonº [was] strong.º 25 And Israelº tookºª² all² these² cities:º and Israelº dweltºª in all² the citiesº of the Amorites,º in Heshbon,º and in all² the villagesº thereof. 26 For² Heshbonº [was] the cityº of Sihonº the kingº of the Amorites,º who² had foughtºª against the formerº kingº of Moab,º and takenºª² all² his landº out of his hand,º² even unto² Arnon.º 27 Wherefore²² they that speak in proverbsºª say,ºª Comeºª into Heshbon,º let the cityº of Sihonº be builtºª and prepared:ºª 28 For² there is a fireº gone outºª of Heshbon,º² a flameº from the cityº² of Sihon:º it hath consumedºª Arº of Moab,º [and] the lords² of the high places¹² of Arnon.º 29 Woeº to thee, Moab!º thou art undone,ºª O peopleº of Chemosh:º he hath givenºª his sonsº that escaped,º and his daughters,º into captivity¹² unto Sihonº kingº of the Amorites.º 30 We have shotºª at them; Heshbonº is perishedºª even unto² Dibon,º and we have laid them wasteºª even unto² Nophah,º which² [reacheth] unto² Medeba.º

31 ¶ Thus Israelº dweltºª in the landº of the Amorites.º 32 And Mosesº sentºª to spy outºª² Jaazer,º and they tookºª the villagesº thereof, and drove outºªªª² the Amoritesº that² [were] there.²

33 ¶ And they turnedºª and went upºª by the wayº of Bashan:º and Ogº the kingº of Bashanº went outºª againstºª them, he,² and all² his people,º to the battleº at Edrei.º 34 And the LORDº saidºª unto² Moses,º Fearºª him not:² for² I have deliveredºª him into thy hand,º and all² his people,º and his land;º and thou shalt doºª to him as² thou didstºª unto Sihonº kingº of the Amorites,º which² dweltºª at Heshbon.º 35 So they smoteºª him, and his sons,º and all² his people,º until² there was noneº leftºª him alive:º and they possessedºª² his land.º
