The rebellion of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.

1 ¶ Now Korah,º the sonº of Izhar,º the sonº of Kohath,º the sonº of Levi,º and Dathanº and Abiram,º the sonsº of Eliab,º and On,º the sonº of Peleth,º sonsº of Reuben,º tookºª [men]: 2 And they rose upºª beforeº Moses,º with certain¹² of the childrenº² of Israel,º two hundredº and fiftyº princesº of the assembly,º famousº in the congregation,º men¹² of renown:º 3 And they gathered themselves togetherºª against² Mosesº and against² Aaron,º and saidºª unto² them, [Ye take] too muchº upon you, seeing² all² the congregationº [are] holy,º every one² of them, and the LORDº [is] amongº them: wherefore² then lift ye up¹ª yourselves² above² the congregationº of the LORD?º 4 And when Mosesº heardºª [it], he fellºª upon² his face:º 5 And he spakeºª unto² Korahº and unto² all² his company,º saying,ºª Even to morrowº the LORDº will shewºª² who² [are] his, and [who is] holy;º and will cause [him] to come nearºª unto² him: even [him] whom² he hath chosenºª will he cause to come nearºª unto² him. 6 This² do;ºª Takeºª you censers,º Korah,º and all² his company;º 7 And putºª fireº therein,¹ and putºª incenseº in² them beforeº the LORDº to morrow:º and it shall be² [that] the manº whom² the LORDº doth choose,ºª he² [shall be] holy:º [ye take] too muchº upon you, ye sonsº of Levi.º 8 And Mosesº saidºª unto² Korah,º Hear,ºª I pray you,² ye sonsº of Levi:º 9 [Seemeth it but] a small thingº unto² you, that² the Godº of Israelº hath separatedºª you from the congregationº² of Israel,º to bring you nearºª² to² himself to doºª² the serviceº of the tabernacleº of the LORD,º and to standºª beforeº the congregationº to ministerºª unto them? 10 And he hath brought thee nearºª² [to him], and all² thy brethrenº the sonsº of Leviº with² thee: and seekºª ye the priesthoodº also?² 11 For which causeº [both] thou² and all² thy companyº [are] gathered togetherºª against² the LORD:º and what² [is] Aaron,º that² ye murmurºªªª against² him?

12 ¶ And Mosesº sentºª to callºª Dathanº and Abiram,º the sonsº of Eliab:º which said,ºª We will not² come up:ºª 13 [Is it] a small thingº thatº thou hast brought us upºª out of a landº² that flowethºª with milkº and honey,º to killºª us in the wilderness,º except² thou make¹ª thyself altogether¹ª a princeºª² over² us? 14 Moreoverº thou hast not² broughtºª us into² a landº that flowethºª with milkº and honey,º or givenºª us inheritanceº of fieldsº and vineyards:º wilt thou put outºª the eyesº of these² men?¹² we will not² come up.ºª 15 And Mosesº was very¹ wroth,ºª² and saidºª unto² the LORD,º Respectºª² not² thou their offering:º I have not² takenºª oneº assº from² them, neither² have I hurtºª² oneº of² them. 16 And Mosesº saidºª unto² Korah,º Be² thou² and all² thy companyº beforeº the LORD,º thou,² and they,² and Aaron,º to morrow:º 17 And takeºª every manº his censer,º and putºª incenseº in² them, and bringºª ye beforeº the LORDº every manº his censer,º two hundredº and fiftyº censers;º thou² also, and Aaron,º eachº [of you] his censer.º 18 And they tookºª every manº his censer,º and putºª fireº in² them, and laidºª incenseº thereon,² and stoodºª in the doorº of the tabernacleº of the congregationº with Mosesº and Aaron.º 19 And Korahº gatheredºª² all² the congregationº against² them unto² the doorº of the tabernacleº of the congregation:º and the gloryº of the LORDº appearedºª unto² all² the congregation.º 20 And the LORDº spakeºª unto² Mosesº and unto² Aaron,º saying,ºª 21 Separate¹ª yourselves² from amongº² this² congregation,º that I may consumeºª them in a moment.º 22 And they fellºª upon² their faces,º and said,ºª O God,º the Godº of the spiritsº of all² flesh,º shall oneº manº sin,ºª and wilt thou be wrothºª with² all² the congregation?º

Moses separateth the people from the rebels' tents.

23 ¶ And the LORDº spakeºª unto² Moses,º saying,ºª 24 Speakºª unto² the congregation,º saying,ºª Get you upºª from aboutº² the tabernacleº of Korah,º Dathan,º and Abiram.º 25 And Mosesº rose upºª and went¹ª² unto² Dathanº and Abiram;º and the eldersº of Israelº followed¹ª²² him.¹ 26 And he spakeºª unto² the congregation,º saying,ºª Depart,ºª I pray you,² from²² the tentsº of these² wickedº men,¹² and touchºª nothing²² of theirs, lest² ye be consumedºª in all² their sins.º 27 So they gat upºª from²² the tabernacleº of Korah,º Dathan,º and Abiram,º on every side:º² and Dathanº and Abiramº came out,ºª and stoodºª in the doorº of their tents,º and their wives,º and their sons,º and their little children.º 28 And Mosesº said,ºª Hereby² ye shall knowºª that² the LORDº hath sentºª me to doºª² all² these² works;º for² [I have] not² [done them] of mine own mind.º² 29 If² these² men dieºª the common deathº of all² men,º or if they be visitedºª after² the visitationº of all² men;º [then] the LORDº hath not² sentºª me. 30 But if² the LORDº makeºª a new thing,º and the earthº openºª² her mouth,º and swallow them up,ºª² with all² that² [appertain] unto them, and they go downºª quickº into the pit;º then ye shall understandºª that² these² men¹² have provokedºª² the LORD.º

The earth swalloweth up Korah, and a fire consumeth others.

31 ¶ And it came to pass,² as he had made an endºª of speakingºª² all² these² words,º that the groundº clave asunderºª that² [was] under² them: 32 And the earthº openedºª² her mouth,º and swallowed them up,ºª² and their houses,º and all² the menº that² [appertained] unto Korah,º and all² [their] goods.º 33 They,² and all² that² [appertained] to them, went downºª aliveº into the pit,º and the earthº closedºª upon² them: and they perishedºª from amongº² the congregation.º 34 And all² Israelº that² [were] round aboutº them fledºª at the cryº of them: for² they said,ºª Lest² the earthº swallow us upºª [also]. 35 And there came outºª a fireº from²² the LORD,º and consumedºª the² two hundredº and fiftyº menº that offeredºª incense.º

The censers are reserved to holy use.

36 ¶ And the LORDº spakeºª unto² Moses,º saying,ºª 37 Speakºª unto² Eleazarº the sonº of Aaronº the priest,º that he take upºª² the censersº out¹ of²² the burning,º and scatterºª thou the fireº yonder;º for² they are hallowed.ºª 38 ² The censersº of these² sinnersº against their own souls,º let them makeºª² them broadº platesº [for] a coveringº of the altar:º for² they offeredºª them beforeº the LORD,º therefore they are hallowed:ºª and they shall be² a signº unto the childrenº of Israel.º 39 And Eleazarº the priestº tookºª² the brasenº censers,º wherewith² they that were burntºª had offered;ºª and they were made broadºª [plates for] a coveringº of the altar:º 40 [To be] a memorialº unto the childrenº of Israel,º thatºº no² stranger,ººª which² [is] not² of the seedº² of Aaron,º come nearºª to offerºª incenseº beforeº the LORD;º that he be² not² as Korah,º and as his company:º as² the LORDº saidºª to him by the handº of Moses.º

Fourteen thousand and seven hundred are slain by a plague for murmuring against Moses and Aaron.

41 ¶ But on the morrowº² all² the congregationº of the childrenº of Israelº murmuredºª against² Mosesº and against² Aaron,º saying,ºª Ye² have killedºª² the peopleº of the LORD.º 42 And it came to pass,² when the congregationº was gatheredºª against² Mosesº and against² Aaron,º that they lookedºª toward² the tabernacleº of the congregation:º and, behold,² the cloudº coveredºª it, and the gloryº of the LORDº appeared.ºª 43 And Mosesº and Aaronº cameºª beforeº² the tabernacleº of the congregation.º

44 ¶ And the LORDº spakeºª unto² Moses,º saying,ºª 45 Get you upºª from amongº² this² congregation,º that I may consumeºª them as in a moment.º And they fellºª upon² their faces.º

Aaron by incense stayeth the plague.

46 ¶ And Mosesº saidºª unto² Aaron,º Takeºª² a censer,º and putºª fireº therein² from off¹²² the altar,º and put¹ª on² incense,º and go¹ª² quicklyº unto² the congregation,º and make an atonementºª for² them: for² there is wrathº gone outºª from²² the LORD;º the plagueº is begun.ºª 47 And Aaronº tookºª as² Mosesº commanded,ºª and ranºª into² the midstº of the congregation;º and, behold,² the plagueº was begunºª among the people:º and he put¹ª on²² incense,º and made an atonementºª for² the people.º 48 And he stoodºª between² the deadºª and the living;º and the plagueº was stayed.ºª 49 Now they that diedºª in the plagueº were² fourteenºº thousandº and sevenº hundred,º beside²² them that diedºª about² the matterº of Korah.º 50 And Aaronº returnedºª unto² Mosesº unto² the doorº of the tabernacleº of the congregation:º and the plagueº was stayed.ºª
