NASB — Proverbs 18 — KJV

Contrast the Upright and the Wicked

  1 He who separates° himself seeks° [his own] desire°,
  He Iaquarrels° against all° sound° wisdom°.
  2 A fool° does not delight° in understanding°,
  But only° ain revealing° his own Imind°.
  3 When a wicked° man° comes°, contempt° also° comes°,
  And with dishonor° [comes] scorn°.
  4 The words° of a man’s° mouth° are adeep° waters°;
  IThe fountain° of wisdom° is a bubbling° brook°.
  5 To ashow° partiality°° to the wicked° is not good°,
  [Nor] to bthrust° aside° the righteous° in judgment°.
  6 A fool’s° lips° Ibring° strife°,
  And his mouth° calls° for ablows°.
  7 A afool’s° mouth° is his ruin°,
  And his lips° are the snare° of his soul°.
  8 The words° of a whisperer° are like dainty° morsels°,
  And they go° down° into the Iinnermost° parts° of the body°.
  9 He also° who is aslack° in his work°
  bIs brother° to him who destroys°.
  10 The aname° of the LORD° is a bstrong° tower°;
  The righteous° runs° into it and cis Isafe°.
  11 A arich° man’s° wealth° is his strong° city°,
  And like a high° wall° in his own imagination°.
  12 aBefore° destruction° the heart° of man° is haughty°,
  But bhumility° [goes] before° honor°.
  13 He who agives° an answer° before° he hears°,
  It is folly° and shame° to him.
  14 The aspirit° of a man° can endure° his sickness°,
  But [as for] a bbroken° spirit° who° can bear° it?
  15 The Iamind° of the prudent° acquires° knowledge°,
  And the bear° of the wise° seeks° knowledge°.
  16 A man’s° agift° makes° room° for him
  And brings° him before° great° men°.
  17 The first° Ito plead° his case° [seems] right°,
  [Until] IIanother° comes° and examines° him.
  18 The [cast] alot° puts° an end° to strife°
  And Idecides° between° the mighty° ones.
  19 A brother° offended° [is harder to be won] than° a strong° city°,
  And contentions° are like the bars° of a citadel°.
  20 With the Iafruit° of a man’s° mouth° his stomach° will be satisfied°;
  bHe will be satisfied° [with] the product° of his lips°.
  21 aDeath° and life° are in the Ipower° of the tongue°,
  And those who love° it will eat° its bfruit°.
  22 He who finds° a awife° finds° a good° thing°
  And bobtains° favor° from the LORD°.
  23 The apoor° man° utters° supplications°,
  But the brich° man° canswers° roughly°.
  24 A man° of [too many] friends° [comes] to Iruin°,
  But there° is aa IIfriend° who° sticks° closer° than° a brother°.

Sundry observations of moral virtues, and their contrary vices (10-24).

1 ¶ Through desireº a man, having separated¹ª himself,² seekethºª [and] intermeddlethºª with all² wisdom.º 2 A foolº hath no² delightºª in understanding,º but²² that his heartº may discover¹ª itself.² 3 When the wickedº cometh,ºª [then] comethºª also² contempt,º and with² ignominyº reproach.º 4 The wordsº of a man'sº mouthº [are as] deepº waters,º [and] the wellspringº of wisdomº [as] a flowingºª brook.º 5 [It is] not² goodº to acceptºª the personº of the wicked,º to overthrowºª the righteousº in judgment.º 6 A fool'sº lipsº enterºª into contention,º and his mouthº callethºª for strokes.º 7 A fool'sº mouthº [is] his destruction,º and his lipsº [are] the snareº of his soul.º 8 The wordsº of a talebearerº [are] as wounds,ºª and they² go downºª into the innermost partsº of the belly.º 9 He² also² that is slothfulºª in his workº is brotherº to him that is a greatº waster.¹ª² 10 The nameº of the LORDº [is] a strongº tower:º the righteousº runnethºª into it, and is safe.ºª 11 The rich man'sº wealthº [is] his strongº city,º and as an highºª wallº in his own conceit.º 12 Beforeº destructionº the heartº of manº is haughty,ºª and beforeº honourº [is] humility.º 13 He that answerethºª a matterº before² he hearethºª [it], it² [is] follyº and shameº unto him. 14 The spiritº of a manº will sustainºª his infirmity;º but a woundedº spiritº who² can bear?ºª 15 The heartº of the prudentºª gettethºª knowledge;º and the earº of the wiseº seekethºª knowledge.º 16 A man'sº giftº maketh roomºª for him, and bringethºª him beforeº great² men.¹ 17 [He that is] firstº in his own causeº [seemeth] just;º but his neighbourº comethºªªª and searchethºª him. 18 The lotº causeth contentionsº to cease,ºª and partethºª between² the mighty.º 19 A brotherº offendedºª [is harder to be won] than a strongº city:º² and [their] contentionsºª¹ [are] like the barsº of a castle.º 20 A man'sº bellyº shall be satisfiedºª with the fruitº² of his mouth;º [and] with the increaseº of his lipsº shall he be filled.ºª 21 Deathº and lifeº [are] in the powerº of the tongue:º and they that loveºª it shall eatºª the fruitº thereof. 22 [Whoso] findethºª a wifeº findethºª a goodº [thing], and obtainethºª favourº of the LORD.º² 23 The poorºª usethºª intreaties;º but the richº answerethºª roughly.º 24 A manº [that hath] friendsº must shew himself friendly:ºª and there isº a friendºª [that] sticketh closerº than a brother.º²
