Abijah Succeeds Rehoboam

1 aIn the eighteenth°° year° of King° Jeroboam°, Abijah° became° king° over° Judah°. 2 He reigned° three° years° in Jerusalem°; and his mother’s° name° was Micaiah° the daughter° of Uriel° of Gibeah°.

aNow there was war° between° Abijah° and Jeroboam°. 3 Abijah° began° the battle° with an army° of valiant° warriors°, 400,000°°° chosen° men°, while Jeroboam° drew° up in battle° formation° against° him with 800,000°°° chosen° men° [who were] valiant° warriors°.

4 ¶ Then Abijah° stood° on Mount° aZemaraim°, which° is in the hill° country° of Ephraim°, and said°, “Listen° to me, Jeroboam° and all° Israel°: 5 Do you not know° that athe LORD° God° of Israel° gave° the rule° over° Israel° forever° to David° Iand his sons° by ba covenant° of salt°? 6 Yet aJeroboam° the son° of Nebat°, the servant° of Solomon° the son° of David°, rose° up and rebelled° against° his Imaster°, 7 and worthless° men° gathered° about° him, scoundrels°°, who proved° too° strong° for Rehoboam°, the son° of Solomon°, when Iahe was young° and timid°° and could not hold° his own° against° them.

8 ¶ “So now° you intend° to resist° the kingdom° of the LORD° Ithrough° the sons° of David°, IIbeing a great° multitude° and [having] with you athe golden° calves° which° Jeroboam° made° for gods° for you. 9 aHave you not driven° out the priests° of the LORD°, the sons° of Aaron° and the Levites°, and made° for yourselves priests° like the peoples° of [other] lands°? Whoever° comes° bto consecrate°° himself° with a young° bull° and seven° rams°, even he may become° a priest° of [what are] cno° gods°. 10 But as for us, the LORD° is our God°, and we have not forsaken° Him; and the sons° of Aaron° are ministering° to the LORD° as priests°, and the Levites° Iattend to their work°. 11 Every° morning° and evening° athey Iburn° to the LORD° burnt° offerings° and fragrant° incense°, and bthe showbread°° is [set] on the clean° table°, and the golden° lampstand° with its lamps° is [ready] to light° every° evening°; for we keep° the charge° of the LORD° our God°, but you have forsaken° Him. 12 Now behold°, God° is with us at [our] head° and aHis priests° with the signal° trumpets° to sound° the alarm° against° you. O sons° of Israel°, do not fight° against° the LORD° God° of your fathers°, for you will not succeed°.”

13 ¶ But Jeroboam° ahad set° an ambush° to come° from the rear°, so that [Israel] was in front° of Judah° and the ambush° was behind°° them. 14 When Judah° turned° around°, behold°, Ithey were attacked° both front° and rear°; so athey cried° to the LORD°, and the priests° blew° the trumpets°. 15 Then the men° of Judah° raised° a war cry°, and when the men° of Judah° raised° the war cry°, then it was that God° Iarouted° Jeroboam° and all° Israel° before° Abijah° and Judah°. 16 When the sons° of Israel° fled° before°° Judah°, aGod° gave° them into their hand°. 17 Abijah° and his people° defeated° them with a great° slaughter°, so that 500,000°°° chosen° men° of Israel° fell° slain°. 18 Thus the sons° of Israel° were subdued° at that time°, and the sons° of Judah° Iconquered° abecause° they trusted° in the LORD°, the God° of their fathers°. 19 Abijah° pursued° Jeroboam° and captured° from him [several] cities°, Bethel° with its villages°, Jeshanah° with its villages° and IEphron° with its villages°.

Abijah succeeding maketh war against Jeroboam.

4 ¶ And Abijahº stood upºª upon²² mountº Zemaraim,º which² [is] in mountº Ephraim,º and said,ºª Hearºª me, thou Jeroboam,º and all² Israel;º 5 Ought ye not² to knowºª that² the LORDº Godº of Israelº gaveºª the kingdomº over² Israelº to Davidº for ever,º [even] to him and to his sonsº by a covenantº of salt?º 6 Yet Jeroboamº the sonº of Nebat,º the servantº of Solomonº the sonº of David,º is risen up,ºª and hath rebelledºª against² his lord.º 7 And there are gatheredºª unto² him vainº men,¹² the childrenº of Belial,º and have strengthened¹ª themselves² against² Rehoboamº the sonº of Solomon,º when Rehoboamº was² youngº and tenderhearted,ºº and could not² withstandºª² them.¹ 8 And now² ye² thinkºª to withstandºª the kingdomº¹ of the LORDº in the handº of the sonsº of David;º and ye² [be] a greatº multitude,º and [there are] with² you goldenº calves,º which² Jeroboamº madeºª you for gods.º 9 Have ye not² cast outºª² the priestsº of the LORD,º² the sonsº of Aaron,º and the Levites,º and have madeºª you priestsº after the manner of the nationsº of [other] lands?º so that whosoever² comethºª to consecrateººª himself with a youngºº bullockº and sevenº rams,º [the same] may be² a priestº of [them that are] noº gods.º 10 But as for us,² the LORDº [is] our God,º and we have not² forsakenºª him; and the priests,º which ministerºª unto the LORD,º [are] the sonsº of Aaron,º and the Levitesº [wait] upon [their] business:º 11 And they burnºª unto the LORDº every morningº and every eveningº burnt sacrificesº and sweetº incense:º the shewbreadºº also [set they in order] upon² the pureº table;º and the candlestickº of goldº with the lampsº thereof, to burnºª every evening:º for² we² keepºª² the chargeº of the LORDº our God;º but ye² have forsakenºª him. 12 And, behold,² Godº himself [is] with² us for [our] captain,º and his priestsº with soundingº trumpetsº to cry alarmºª against² you. Trusting in God he overcometh Jeroboam.

13 ¶ But Jeroboamº caused²² an ambushmentº to come¹ª about¹ª² behindº² them: so they were² beforeº Judah,º and the ambushmentº [was] behindº² them. 14 And when Judahº looked back,ºª behold,² the battleº [was] beforeº and behind:º and they criedºª unto the LORD,º and the priestsº soundedºªªª with the trumpets.º 15 Then the menº of Judahº gave a shout:ºª and as the menº of Judahº shouted,ºª it came to pass,² that Godº smoteºª² Jeroboamº and all² Israelº beforeº Abijahº and Judah.º 16 And the childrenº of Israelº fledºª beforeº² Judah:º and Godº deliveredºª them into their hand.º 17 And Abijahº and his peopleº slewºª them with a greatº slaughter:º so there fell downºª slainº of Israelº² fiveº hundredº thousandº chosenºª men.º 18 Thus the childrenº of Israelº were brought¹ª under² at that² time,º and the childrenº of Judahº prevailed,ºª because² they reliedºª upon² the LORDº Godº of their fathers.º 19 And Abijahº pursuedºª afterº Jeroboam,º and tookºª citiesº from² him,² Bethelº with² the townsº thereof, and Jeshanahº with² the townsº thereof, and Ephrainº with the townsº thereof. 20 Neither² did Jeroboamº recoverºª strengthº again² in the daysº of Abijah:º and the LORDº struckºª him, and he died.ºª
