NASB — Proverbs 12 — KJV

Contrast the Upright and the Wicked

  1 Whoever loves° Idiscipline° loves° knowledge°,
  But he who hates° reproof° is stupid°.
  2 A agood° man° will obtain° favor° from the LORD°,
  But He will condemn° a man° Iwho devises° evil°.
  3 A man° will anot be established° by wickedness°,
But the root° of the brighteous° will not be moved°.
  4 An Iaexcellent° wife° is the crown° of her husband°,
But she who shames° [him] is like brottenness° in his bones°.
  5 The thoughts° of the righteous° are just°,
[But] the counsels° of the wicked° are deceitful°.
  6 The awords° of the wicked° lie° in wait° for blood°,
But the bmouth° of the upright° will deliver° them.
  7 The awicked° are overthrown° and are no° more,
But the bhouse° of the righteous° will stand°.
  8 A man° will be praised° according° to his insight°,
But one of perverse° Imind° will be despised°.
  9 Better° is he who is lightly° esteemed° and has a servant°
  Than° he who honors° himself and lacks° bread°.
  10 A arighteous° man° has° regard° for the life° of his animal°,
But [even] the compassion° of the wicked° is cruel°.
  11 He awho tills° his land° will have° plenty° of bread°,
  But he who pursues° worthless° [things] lacks° Isense°.
  12 The awicked° man desires° the Ibooty° of evil° men°,
But the root° of the righteous° byields° [fruit].
  13 IAn evil° man° is ensnared° by the transgression° of his lips°,
  But the arighteous° will escape° from trouble°.
  14 A man° will be asatisfied° with good° by the fruit° of his Iwords°,
  And the bdeeds° of a man’s° hands° will return° to him.
  15 The away° of a fool° is right° in his own eyes°,
  But a wise° man° is he who listens° to counsel°.
  16 A afool’s° anger° is known° at once°,
  But a prudent° man° conceals° dishonor°.
  17 He who Ispeaks° truth° tells° what° is right°,
  But a false° witness°, deceit°.
  18 There° is one who aspeaks° rashly° like the thrusts° of a sword°,
  But the btongue° of the wise° brings° healing°.
  19 Truthful° lips° will be established° forever°,
  But a alying° tongue° is only° for a moment°.
  20 Deceit° is in the heart° of those who devise° evil°,
  But counselors° of peace° have joy°.
  21 aNo°° harm° befalls° the righteous°,
  But the wicked° are filled° with trouble°.
  22 aLying° lips° are an abomination° to the LORD°,
But those who deal° faithfully° are His delight°.
  23 A aprudent° man° conceals° knowledge°,
  But the heart° of fools° proclaims° folly°.
  24 The hand° of the diligent° will rule°,
But the Islack° [hand] will be aput to forced° labor°.
  25 aAnxiety° in a man’s° heart° weighs° it down°,
  But a bgood° word° makes° it glad°.
  26 The righteous° is a guide° to his neighbor°,
  But the way° of the wicked° leads° them astray°.
  27 A Ilazy° man° does not IIroast° his prey°,
  But the aprecious° possession° of a man° [is] diligence°.
  28 aIn the way° of righteousness° is life°,
And in [its] pathway°° there is no° death°.

Sundry observations of moral virtues, and their contrary vices (10-24).

1 ¶ Whoso lovethºª instructionº lovethºª knowledge:º but he that hatethºª reproofº [is] brutish.º 2 A goodº [man] obtainethºª favourº of the LORD:º² but a manº of wicked devicesº will he condemn.ºª 3 A manº shall not² be establishedºª by wickedness:º but the rootº of the righteousº shall not² be moved.ºª 4 A virtuousº womanº [is] a crownº to her husband:º but she that maketh ashamedºª [is] as rottennessº in his bones.º 5 The thoughtsº of the righteousº [are] right:º [but] the counselsº of the wickedº [are] deceit.º 6 The wordsº of the wickedº [are] to lie in waitºª for blood:º but the mouthº of the uprightº shall deliverºª them. 7 The wickedº are overthrown,ºª and [are] not:² but the houseº of the righteousº shall stand.ºª 8 A manº shall be commendedºª accordingº to his wisdom:º but he that is of a perverseºª heartº shall be² despised.º 9 [He that is] despised,ºª and hath a servant,º [is] betterº than he that honoureth¹ª himself,²² and lackethº bread.º 10 A righteousº [man] regardethºª the lifeº of his beast:º but the tender merciesº of the wickedº [are] cruel.º 11 He that tillethºª his landº shall be satisfiedºª with bread:º but he that followethºª vainº [persons is] voidº of understanding.º 12 The wickedº desirethºª the netº of evilº [men]: but the rootº of the righteousº yieldethºª [fruit]. 13 The wickedº is snaredº by the transgressionº of [his] lips:º but the justº shall come outºª of trouble.º² 14 A manº shall be satisfiedºª with goodº by the fruitº² of [his] mouth:º and the recompenceº of a man'sº handsº shall be renderedºªªª unto him. 15 The wayº of a foolº [is] rightº in his own eyes:º but he that hearkenethºª unto counselº [is] wise.º 16 A fool'sº wrathº is presentlyº known:ºª but a prudentº [man] coverethºª shame.º 17 [He that] speakethºª truthº sheweth forthºª righteousness:º but a falseº witnessº deceit.º 18 There isº that speakethºª like the piercingsº of a sword:º but the tongueº of the wiseº [is] health.º 19 The lipº of truthº shall be establishedºª for ever:º but² a lyingº tongueº [is] but for a moment.ºª 20 Deceitº [is] in the heartº of them that imagineºª evil:º but to the counsellorsºª of peaceº [is] joy.º 21 There shall no²² evilº happenºª to the just:º but the wickedº shall be filledºª with mischief.º 22 Lyingº lipsº [are] abominationº to the LORD:º but they that dealºª trulyº [are] his delight.º 23 A prudentº manº concealethºª knowledge:º but the heartº of foolsº proclaimethºª foolishness.º 24 The handº of the diligentº shall bear rule:ºª but the slothfulº shall be² under tribute.º 25 Heavinessº in the heartº of manº maketh it stoop:ºª but a goodº wordº maketh it glad.ºª 26 The righteousº [is] more excellentºª than his neighbour:º² but the wayº of the wickedº seducethºª them. 27 The slothfulº [man] roastethºª not² that which he took in hunting:º but the substanceº of a diligentº manº [is] precious.º 28 In the wayº of righteousnessº [is] life;º and [in] the pathwayºº [thereof there is] no² death.º
