NASB — Job 29 — KJV

Job’s Past Was Glorious

1 And Job° again° took° up his adiscourse° and said°,
  2 “Oh°° that I were as in months° gone° by,
  As in the days° when God° awatched° over me;
  3 When aHis lamp° shone° over° my head°,
  [And] bby His light° I walked° through darkness°;
  4 As I was in Ithe prime° of my days°,
  When the IIafriendship° of God° [was] over° my tent°;
  5 When Ithe Almighty° was yet° with me,
  [And] my children° were around° me;
  6 When my steps° were bathed° in abutter°,
  And the brock° poured° out for me streams° of oil°!
  7 “When I went° out to athe gate° of the city°,
  When I Itook° my seat° in the square°,
  8 The young° men° saw° me and hid° themselves,
  And the old° men° arose° [and] stood°.
  9 “The princes° astopped° talking°
  And bput° [their] hands° on their mouths°;
  10 The voice° of the nobles° was Iahushed°,
  And their btongue° stuck° to their palate°.
  11 “For when athe ear° heard°, it called° me blessed°,
  And when the eye° saw°, it gave° witness° of me,
  12 Because° I delivered° athe poor° who cried° for help°,
  And the borphan° who had no° helper°.
  13 “The blessing° of the one aready to perish° came° upon me,
  And I made the bwidow’s° heart° sing° for joy°.
  14 “I aput° on righteousness°, and it clothed° me;
  My justice° was like a robe° and a turban°.
  15 “I was aeyes° to the blind°
  And feet° to the lame°.
  16 “I was a father° to athe needy°,
  And I investigated° the case° which I did not know°.
  17 “I abroke° the jaws° of the wicked°
  And snatched° the prey° from his teeth°.
  18 “Then I Ithought°, ‘I shall die° IIin my nest°,
  And I shall multiply° [my] days° as the sand°.
  19 ‘My aroot° is spread° out to the waters°,
  And bdew° lies° all night° on my branch°.
  20 ‘My glory° is [ever] new° with me,
  And my abow° is renewed° in my hand°.’

Job bemoaneth himself of his former prosperity and honour.

1 ¶ Moreover² Jobº continuedº¹ªª his parable,º and said,ºª 2 Oh that¹ª² I were² as [in] monthsº past,º as [in] the daysº [when] Godº preservedºª me; 3 When his candleº shinedºª upon² my head,º [and when] by his lightº I walked¹ª² [through] darkness;º 4 As² I was² in the daysº of my youth,º when the secretº of Godº [was] upon² my tabernacle;º 5 When the Almightyº [was] yet² with² me, [when] my childrenº [were] aboutº me; 6 When I washedºª my stepsº with butter,º and the rockº poured me outºª² riversº of oil;º 7 When I went outºª to the gateº through² the city,º [when] I preparedºª my seatº in the street!º 8 The young menº sawºª me, and hid¹ª themselves:² and the agedº arose,ºª [and] stood up.ºª 9 The princesº refrainedºª talking,º and laidºª [their] handº on their mouth.º 10 The noblesº heldºª their peace,º and their tongueº cleavedºª to the roof of their mouth.º 11 When² the earº heardºª [me], then it blessedºª me; and when the eyeº sawºª [me], it gave witnessºª to me: 12 Because² I deliveredºª the poorº that cried,ºª and the fatherless,º and [him that had] none² to helpºª him. 13 The blessingº of him that was ready to perishºª cameºª upon² me: and I caused the widow'sº heartº to sing for joy.ºª 14 I put¹ª on² righteousness,º and it clothedºª me: my judgmentº [was] as a robeº and a diadem.º 15 I was² eyesº to the blind,º and feetº [was] I² to the lame.º 16 I² [was] a fatherº to the poor:º and the causeº [which] I knewºª not² I searched out.ºª 17 And I brakeºª the jawsº of the wicked,º and pluckedºª the spoilº out of his teeth.º² 18 Then I said,ºª I shall dieºª in² my nest,º and I shall multiplyºª [my] daysº as the sand.º 19 My rootº [was] spread outºª by² the waters,º and the dewº lay all nightºª upon my branch.º 20 My gloryº [was] freshº in² me,¹ and my bowº was renewedºª in my hand.º 21 Unto me [men] gave ear,ºª and waited,ºª and kept silenceºª atº my counsel.º 22 Afterº my wordsº they spake not again;ºª² and my speechº droppedºª upon² them. 23 And they waitedºª for me as for the rain;º and they openedºª their mouthº wide [as] for the latter rain.º 24 [If] I laughedºª on² them, they believedºª [it] not;² and the lightº of my countenanceº they cast not down.ºª² 25 I chose¹ª out² their way,º and satºª chief,º and dweltºª as a kingº in the army,º as² one [that] comfortethºª the mourners.º
