  Will have° bten° left° to the house° of Israel°.”

A lamentation for Israel.

1 ¶ Hearºª ye² this² wordº which² I² take upºª against² you, [even] a lamentation,º O houseº of Israel.º 2 The virginº of Israelº is fallen;ºª she shall no² moreºª rise:ºª she is forsakenºª upon² her land;º [there is] none² to raise her up.ºª 3 For² thus² saithºª the Lordº GOD;º The cityº that went outºª [by] a thousandº shall leaveºª an hundred,º and that which went forthºª [by] an hundredº shall leaveºª ten,º to the houseº of Israel.º

An exhortation to repentance.

4 ¶ For² thus² saithºª the LORDº unto the houseº of Israel,º Seekºª ye me, and ye shall live:ºª 5 But seekºª not² Bethel,º nor² enterºª into Gilgal,º and passºª not² to Beersheba:º for² Gilgalº shall surely¹ª go into captivity,ºª and Bethelº shall come² to nought.º 6 Seekºª² the LORD,º and ye shall live;ºª lest² he break outºª like fireº in the houseº of Joseph,º and devourºª [it], and [there be] none² to quenchºª [it] in Bethel.º 7 Ye who turnºª judgmentº to wormwood,º and leave off¹ª² righteousnessº in the earth,º 8 [Seek him] that makethºª the seven starsº and Orion,º and turnethºª the shadow of deathº into the morning,º and maketh the day¹ darkºª² with night:º that callethºª for the watersº of the sea,º and poureth them outºª upon² the faceº of the earth:º The LORDº [is] his name:º 9 That strengthenethºª the spoiledº against² the strong,¹² so that the spoiledº shall comeºª against² the fortress.º 10 They hateºª him that rebukethºª in the gate,º and they abhorºª him that speakethºª uprightly.º 11 Forasmuchº therefore² as your treadingºª [is] upon² the poor,º and ye takeºª from² him burdensº of wheat:º ye have builtºª housesº of hewn stone,º but ye shall not² dwellºª in them; ye have plantedºª pleasantº vineyards,º but ye shall not² drinkºª² wineº of them. 12 For² I knowºª your manifoldº transgressionsº and your mightyº sins:º they afflictºª the just,º they takeºª a bribe,º and they turn asideºª the poorº in the gateº [from their right]. 13 Therefore² the prudentºª shall keep silenceºª in that² time;º for² it² [is] an evilº time.º 14 Seekºª good,º and not² evil,º that² ye may live:ºª and so² the LORD,º the Godº of hosts,º shall be² with² you, as² ye have spoken.ºª 15 Hateºª the evil,º and loveºª the good,º and establishºª judgmentº in the gate:º it may be² that the LORDº Godº of hostsº will be graciousºª unto the remnantº of Joseph.º 16 Therefore² the LORD,º the Godº of hosts,º the Lord,º saithºª thus;² Wailingº [shall be] in all² streets;º and they shall sayºª in all² the highways,º Alas!º alas!º and they shall callºª the husbandmanº to² mourning,º and such as are skilfulºª of lamentationº to² wailing.º 17 And in all² vineyardsº [shall be] wailing:º for² I will passºª throughº thee, saithºª the LORD.º 18 Woeº unto you that desireºª² the dayº of the LORD!º to what endº [is] it² for you? the dayº of the LORDº [is] darkness,º and not² light.º 19 As if² a manº did fleeºª fromº² a lion,º and a bearº metºª him; or wentºª into the house,º and leanedºª his handº on² the wall,º and a serpentº bitºª him. 20 [Shall] not² the dayº of the LORDº [be] darkness,º and not² light?º even very dark,º and no² brightnessº in it?
