Kings of Israel: Jehoahaz and Jehoash

1 In the twenty-third°° year° of Joash° the son° of Ahaziah°, king° of Judah°, Jehoahaz° the son° of Jehu° became° king° over° Israel° at Samaria°, [and he reigned] seventeen°° years°. 2 He did° evil° in the sight° of the LORD°, and followed°° the sins° of Jeroboam° the son° of Nebat°, awith which° he made Israel° sin°; he did not turn° from them. 3 aSo the anger° of the LORD° was kindled° against Israel°, and He gave° them continually°° into the hand° of bHazael° king° of Aram°, and into the hand° of cBen-hadad° the son° of Hazael°. 4 Then aJehoahaz° entreated° the favor° of the LORD°, and the LORD° listened° to him; for bHe saw° the oppression° of Israel°, how° the king° of Aram° oppressed° them. 5 The LORD° gave° Israel° a Iadeliverer°, so that they IIescaped° from under° the hand° of the Arameans°; and the sons° of Israel° lived° in their tents° as formerly°°. 6 Nevertheless° they did not turn° away° from the sins° of the house° of Jeroboam°, awith which° he made Israel° sin°, but walked° in Ithem; and bthe Asherah° also° remained standing° in Samaria°. 7 For he left° to Jehoahaz° of the Iarmy° not more°° than°° fifty° horsemen° and ten° chariots° and 10,000°° footmen°, for the king° of Aram° had destroyed° them and amade° them like the dust° at threshing°. 8 Now the rest° of the acts° of Jehoahaz°, and all° that he did° and his might°, are they not written° in the Book° of the Chronicles°° of the Kings° of Israel°? 9 And Jehoahaz° slept° with his fathers°, and they buried° him in Samaria°; and Joash° his son° became° king° in his place°.

Death of Elisha

14 ¶ When Elisha° Ibecame° sick° with the illness° of which° he was to die°, Joash° the king° of Israel° came° down° to him and wept° over° IIhim and said°, “aMy father°, my father°, the chariots° of Israel° and its horsemen°!” 15 Elisha° said° to him, “Take° a bow° and arrows°.” So he Itook° a bow° and arrows°. 16 Then he said° to the king° of Israel°, “Put° your hand° on the bow°.” And he put° his hand° [on it], then Elisha° laid° his hands° on the king’s° hands°. 17 He said°, “Open° the window° toward the east°,” and he opened° [it]. Then Elisha° said°, “Shoot°!” And he shot°. And he said°, “The LORDS° arrow° of victory°, even the arrow° of victory° over Aram°; for you will Idefeat° the Arameans° at aAphek° until° you have IIdestroyed° [them].” 18 Then he said°, “Take° the arrows°,” and he took° them. And he said° to the king° of Israel°, “Strike° the ground°,” and he struck° [it] three° times° and Istopped°. 19 So athe man° of God° was angry° with him and said°, “You should have struck° five° or° six° times°, then° you would have struck° Aram° until° you would have Idestroyed° [it]. But now° you shall strike° Aram° b[only] three° times°.”

Now athe bands° of the Moabites° would invade° the land° in the spring° of the year°. 21 As they were burying° a man°, behold°, they saw° a marauding° band°; and they cast° the man° into the grave° of Elisha°. And when the man° Itouched° the bones° of Elisha° he arevived° and stood° up on his feet°.

Jehoahaz his wicked reign.

Jehoahaz, oppressed by Hazael, is relieved by prayer.

3 ¶ And the angerº of the LORDº was kindledºª against Israel,º and he deliveredºª them into the handº of Hazaelº kingº of Syria,º and into the handº of Benhadadº the sonº of Hazael,º all² [their] days.º 4 And Jehoahazº besoughtºª² the LORD,º² and the LORDº hearkenedºª unto¹² him: for² he sawºª² the oppressionº of Israel,º because² the kingº of Syriaº oppressedºª them. 5 (And the LORDº gaveºª Israelº a saviour,ºª so that they went outºª from under²² the handº of the Syrians:º and the childrenº of Israelº dweltºª in their tents,º as beforetime.ºº 6 Nevertheless² they departedºª not² from the sinsº² of the houseº of Jeroboam,º who² made² Israelº sin,ºª [but] walkedºª therein: and there remainedºª the groveº also² in Samaria.)º 7 Neither²² did he leaveºª of the peopleº to Jehoahazº but²² fiftyº horsemen,º and tenº chariots,º and tenº thousandº footmen;º for² the kingº of Syriaº had destroyedºª them, and had madeºª them like the dustº by threshing.ºª

Joash succeedeth him.

8 ¶ Now the restº of the actsº of Jehoahaz,º and all² that² he did,ºª and his might,º [are] they² not² writtenºª in² the bookº of the chroniclesºº of the kingsº of Israel?º 9 And Jehoahazº sleptºª with² his fathers;º and they buriedºª him in Samaria:º and Joashº his sonº reignedºª in his stead.²

Elisha dying prophesieth to Joash three victories over the Syrians.

14 ¶ Now Elishaº was fallen sickºª of² his sicknessº whereof² he died.ºª And Joashº the kingº of Israelº came downºª unto² him, and weptºª over² his face,º and said,ºª O my father,º my father,º the chariotº of Israel,º and the horsemenº thereof. 15 And Elishaº saidºª unto him, Takeºª bowº and arrows.º And he tookºª unto² him bowº and arrows.º 16 And he saidºª to the kingº of Israel,º Putºª thine handº upon² the bow.º And he putºª his handº [upon it]: and Elishaº putºª his handsº upon² the king'sº hands.º 17 And he said,ºª Openºª the windowº eastward.º And he openedºª [it]. Then Elishaº said,ºª Shoot.ºª And he shot.ºª And he said,ºª The arrowº of the LORD'Sº deliverance,º and the arrowº of deliveranceº from Syria:º for thou shalt smiteºª² the Syriansº in Aphek,º till² thou have consumedºª [them]. 18 And he said,ºª Takeºª the arrows.º And he tookºª [them]. The Moabites invading the land, Elisha's bones raise up a dead man.

20 ¶ And Elishaº died,ºª and they buriedºª him. And the bandsº of the Moabitesº invadedºª the landº at the coming inºª of the year.º 21 And it came to pass,² as they² were buryingºª a man,º that, behold,² they spiedºª² a bandº [of men]; and they castºª² the manº into the sepulchreº of Elisha:º and when the manº was let down,¹ª² and touchedºª the bonesº of Elisha,º he revived,ºª and stood upºª on² his feet.º

22 ¶ But Hazaelº kingº of Syriaº oppressedºª² Israelº all² the daysº of Jehoahaz.º 23 And the LORDº was graciousºª unto them, and had compassion¹ª on² them, and had respectºª unto² them, because² of¹ his covenantº with² Abraham,º Isaac,º and Jacob,º and wouldºª not² destroyºª them, neither² castºª he them from²² his presenceº as² yet.¹² 24 So Hazaelº kingº of Syriaº died;ºª and Benhadadº his sonº reignedºª in his stead.² 25 And Jehoashº the sonº of Jehoahazº tookºª againºª out of the handº² of Benhadadº the sonº of Hazaelº² the cities,º which² he had takenºª out of the handº² of Jehoahazº his fatherº by war.º Threeº timesº did Joashº beatºª him, and recoveredºª² the citiesº of Israel.º
