The Devastation of Locusts

1 The aword° of the LORD° that came° to bJoel°, the son° of Pethuel°:
  2 aHear° this°, O belders°,
  And listen°, all° inhabitants° of the land°.
  cHas [anything like] this° happened° in your days°
  Or° in your fathers’° days°?
  3 aTell° your sons° about it,
  And [let] your sons° [tell] their sons°,
  And their sons° the next° generation°.

  4 ¶ What° the agnawing° locust° has left°, the swarming° locust° has eaten°;
  And what° the bswarming° locust° has left°, the creeping° locust° has eaten°;
  And what° the creeping° locust° has left°, the cstripping° locust° has eaten°.
  5 Awake°, adrunkards°, and weep°;
  And wail°, all° you wine° drinkers°,
  On account° of the sweet° wine°
  That is bcut° off° from your mouth°.
  6 For a anation° has Iinvaded° my land°,
  Mighty° and without° number°;
  bIts teeth° are the teeth° of a lion°,
  And it has the fangs° of a lioness°.
  7 It has amade° my vine° a waste°
  And my fig° tree° Isplinters°.
  It has stripped° them bare° and cast° [them] away°;
  Their branches° have become° white°.

  For the bridegroom° of her youth°.
  9 The agrain offering° and the drink° offering° are cut° off°
  From the house° of the LORD°.
  The bpriests° mourn°,
  The ministers° of the LORD°.
  10 The field° is aruined°,
  bThe land° mourns°;
  For the grain° is ruined°,
  The new° wine° dries° up,
  Fresh° oil° Ifails°.
  11 IaBe ashamed°, O farmers°,
  Wail°, O vinedressers°,
  For the wheat° and the barley°;
  Because° the bharvest° of the field° is destroyed°.
  12 The avine° dries° up
  And the fig° tree° Ifails°;
  The bpomegranate°, the cpalm° also°, and the IIdapple° tree°,
  All° the trees° of the field° dry° up.
  Indeed°, erejoicing° dries° up
  From the sons° of men°.

Starvation and Drought

  14 aConsecrate° a fast°,
  Proclaim° a bsolemn° assembly°;
  Gather° the elders°
  [And] all° the inhabitants° of the land°
  To the house° of the LORD° your God°,
  And ccry° out to the LORD°.
  15 aAlas° for the day°!
  For the bday° of the LORD° is near°,
  And it will come° as cdestruction° from the IAlmighty°.
  16 Has not afood° been cut° off° before° our eyes°,
  Gladness° and bjoy° from the house° of our God°?
  17 The Iaseeds° shrivel° under° their IIclods°;
  The storehouses° are desolate°,
  The barns° are torn° down°,
  For the grain° is dried° up.
  18 How° athe beasts° groan°!
  The herds° of cattle° wander° aimlessly°
  Because° there° is no° pasture° for them;
  Even° the flocks° of sheep° Isuffer°.
  19 aTo You, O LORD°, I cry°;
  For bfire° has devoured° the pastures° of the wilderness°
  And the flame° has burned° up all° the trees° of the field°.
  20 Even° the beasts° of the field° Iapant° for You;
  For the bwater° brooks° are dried° up
  And fire° has devoured° the pastures° of the wilderness°.

Joel, declaring sundry judgments of God, exhorteth to observe them,

8 ¶ Lamentºª like a virginº girdedºª with sackclothº for² the husbandº of her youth.º 9 The meat offeringº and the drink offeringº is cut offºª from the houseº² of the LORD;º the priests,º the LORD'Sº ministers,ºª mourn.ºª 10 The fieldº is wasted,ºª the landº mourneth;ºª for² the cornº is wasted:ºª the new wineº is dried up,ºª the oilº languisheth.ºª 11 Be ye ashamed,¹ª² O ye husbandmen;º howl,ºª O ye vinedressers,º for² the wheatº and for² the barley;º because² the harvestº of the fieldº is perished.ºª 12 The vineº is dried up,ºª and the fig treeº languisheth;ºª the pomegranate¹ tree,² the palm treeº also,² and the apple tree,º [even] all² the treesº of the field,º are withered:ºª because² joyº is withered awayºª from² the sonsº of men.º 13 Girdºª yourselves, and lament,ºª ye priests:º howl,ºª ye ministersºª of the altar:º come,ºª lie all nightºª in sackcloth,º ye ministersºª of my God:º for² the meat offeringº and the drink offeringº is withholdenºª from the houseº² of your God.º

He prescribeth a fast for complaint.

14 ¶ Sanctifyºª ye a fast,º callºª a solemn assembly,º gatherºª the eldersº [and] all² the inhabitantsºª of the landº [into] the houseº of the LORDº your God,º and cryºª unto² the LORD,º 15 Alasº for the day!º for² the dayº of the LORDº [is] at hand,º and as a destructionº from the Almightyº² shall it come.ºª 16 Is not² the meatº cut offºª before² our eyes,º [yea], joyº and gladnessº from the houseº² of our God?º 17 The seedº is rottenºª under² their clods,º the garnersº are laid desolate,ºª the barnsº are broken down;ºª for² the cornº is withered.ºª 18 How² do the beastsº groan!ºª the herdsº of cattleº are perplexed,ºª because² they have no² pasture;º yea,² the flocksº of sheepº are made desolate.ºª 19 O LORD,º to² thee will I cry:ºª for² the fireº hath devouredºª the pasturesº of the wilderness,º and the flameº hath burnedºª all² the treesº of the field.º 20 The beastsº of the fieldº cryºª also² unto² thee: for² the riversº of watersº are dried up,ºª and the fireº hath devouredºª the pasturesº of the wilderness.º
