1 aJosiah° was eight° years° old° when he became° king°, and he reigned° thirty-one°° years° in Jerusalem°; and his mother’s° name° [was] Jedidah° the daughter° of Adaiah° of bBozkath°. 2 He did° right° in the sight° of the LORD° and walked° in all° the way° of his father° David°, nor° did he aturn° aside° to the right° or to the left°.

3 ¶ Now ain the eighteenth°° year° of King° Josiah°, the king° sent° Shaphan°, the son° of Azaliah° the son° of Meshullam° the scribe°, to the house° of the LORD° saying°, 4aGo° up to Hilkiah° the high° priest° that he may Icount° the money° brought° in to the house° of the LORD° which° the doorkeepers°° have gathered° from the people°. 5 aLet them deliver° it into the hand° of the workmen° who have the oversight° of the house° of the LORD°, and let them give° it to the workmen° who° are in the house° of the LORD° to repair° the Idamages° of the house°, 6 to the carpenters° and the builders° and the masons° and for buying° timber° and hewn° stone° to repair° the house°. 7 Only° ano° accounting° shall be made with them for the money° delivered° into their hands°, for they deal° faithfully°.”

The Lost Book

8 ¶ Then Hilkiah° the high° priest° said° to Shaphan° the scribe°, “aI have found° the book° of the law° in the house° of the LORD°.” And Hilkiah° gave° the book° to Shaphan° who read° it. 9 Shaphan° the scribe° came° to the king° and brought° back° word° to the king° and said°, “Your servants° have emptied° out the money° that was found° in the house°, and have delivered° it into the hand° of the workmen° who have the oversight° of the house° of the LORD°.” 10 Moreover, Shaphan° the scribe° told° the king° saying°, “Hilkiah° the priest° has given° me a book°.” And Shaphan° read° it in the presence° of the king°.

11 ¶ When the king° heard° the words° of the book° of the law°, ahe tore° his clothes°. 12 Then the king° commanded° Hilkiah° the priest°, aAhikam° the son° of Shaphan°, IbAchbor° the son° of Micaiah°, Shaphan° the scribe°, and Asaiah° the king’s° servant° saying°, 13 “Go°, inquire° of the LORD° for me and the people° and all° Judah° concerning° the words° of this° book° that has been found°, for agreat° is the wrath° of the LORD° that burns° against us, because°° our fathers° have not listened° to the words° of this° book°, to do° according to all° that is written° concerning° us.”

Huldah Predicts

14 ¶ So Hilkiah° the priest°, Ahikam°, Achbor°, Shaphan°, and Asaiah° went° to Huldah° the prophetess°, the wife° of Shallum° the son° of IaTikvah°, the son° of Harhas°, keeper° of the wardrobe° (now she lived° in Jerusalem° in the bSecond° Quarter); and they spoke° to her. 15 She said° to them, “Thus° says° the LORD° God° of Israel°, ‘Tell° the man° who° sent° you to me, 16 thus° says° the LORD°, “Behold°, I abring° evil° on this° place° and on its inhabitants°, [even] all° the words° of the book° which° the king° of Judah° has read°. 17 aBecause°° they have forsaken° Me and have burned° incense° to other° gods° that they might provoke° Me to anger° with all° the work° of their hands°, therefore My wrath° burns° against this° place°, and it shall not be quenched°.”’ 18 But to athe king° of Judah° who sent° you to inquire° of the LORD° thus° shall you say° to him, ‘Thus° says° the LORD° God° of Israel°, “[Regarding] the words° which° you have heard°, 19 abecause° your heart° was tender° and byou humbled° yourself° before°° the LORD° when you heard° what° I spoke° against° this° place° and against° its inhabitants° that they should become° ca desolation° and a dcurse°, and you have etorn° your clothes° and wept° before° Me, I truly° have heard° you,” declares° the LORD°. 20 “Therefore°, behold°, I will gather° you to your fathers°, and ayou will be gathered° to your grave° in peace°, and your eyes° will not see° all° the evil° which° I will bring° on this° place°.”’” So they brought° back° word° to the king°.

Josiah's good reign.

He taketh care for the repair of the Temple.

3 ¶ And it came to pass² in the eighteenthºº yearº of kingº Josiah,º [that] the kingº sentºª² Shaphanº the sonº of Azaliah,º the sonº of Meshullam,º the scribe,ºª to the houseº of the LORD,º saying,ºª 4 Go upºª to² Hilkiahº the highº priest,º that he may sumºª² the silverº which is broughtºª into the houseº of the LORD,º which² the keepersºª of the doorº have gatheredºª of²² the people:º 5 And let them deliverºª it into² the handº of the doersºª of the work,º that have the oversightºª of the houseº of the LORD:º and let them giveºª it to the doersºª of the workº which² [is] in the houseº of the LORD,º to repairºª the breachesº of the house,º 6 Unto carpenters,º and builders,ºª and masons,ºª and to buyºª timberº and hewnº stoneº to repairºª² the house.º 7 Howbeit² there was no² reckoning² made¹ª with² them of the moneyº that was deliveredºª into² their hand,º because² they² dealtºª faithfully.º

Hilkiah having found the book of the Law, Josiah sendeth to Huldah to enquire of the LORD.

8 ¶ And Hilkiahº the highº priestº saidºª unto² Shaphanº the scribe,ºª I have foundºª the bookº of the lawº in the houseº of the LORD.º And Hilkiahº gaveºª² the bookº to² Shaphan,º and he readºª it. 9 And Shaphanº the scribeºª cameºª to² the king,º and brought¹ª the king¹ word¹ again,ºª²²² and said,ºª Thy servantsº have gatheredºª² the moneyº that was foundºª in the house,º and have deliveredºª it into² the handº of them that doºª the work,º that have the oversightºª of the houseº of the LORD.º 10 And Shaphanº the scribeºª shewedºª the king,º saying,ºª Hilkiahº the priestº hath deliveredºª me a book.º And Shaphanº readºª it beforeº the king.º 11 And it came to pass,² when the kingº had heardºª² the wordsº of the bookº of the law,º that he rentºª² his clothes.º 12 And the kingº commandedºª² Hilkiahº the priest,º and Ahikamº the sonº of Shaphan,º and Achborº the sonº of Michaiah,º and Shaphanº the scribe,ºª and Asahiahº a servantº of the king's,º saying,ºª 13 Go¹ª² ye, enquireºª of² the LORDº for² me, and for² the people,º and for² all² Judah,º concerning² the wordsº of this² bookº that is found:ºª for² greatº [is] the wrathº of the LORDº that² is kindledºª against us, because²² our fathersº have not² hearkenedºª unto² the wordsº of this² book,º to doºª according unto all² that which is writtenºª concerning² us. 14 So Hilkiahº the priest,º and Ahikam,º and Achbor,º and Shaphan,º and Asahiah,º went¹ª² unto² Huldahº the prophetess,º the wifeº of Shallumº the sonº of Tikvah,º the sonº of Harhas,º keeperºª of the wardrobe;º (now she² dweltºª in Jerusalemº in the college;)º and they communedºª with² her.

Huldah prophesieth the destruction of Jerusalem, but respite thereof in Josiah's time.

15 ¶ And she saidºª unto² them, Thus² saithºª the LORDº Godº of Israel,º Tellºª the manº that² sentºª you to² me, 16 Thus² saithºª the LORD,º Behold,² I will bringºª evilº upon² this² place,º and upon² the inhabitantsºª thereof, [even]² all² the wordsº of the bookº which² the kingº of Judahº hath read:ºª 17 Because²² they have forsakenºª me, and have burned incenseºª unto otherº gods,º that² they might provoke me to angerºª with all² the worksº of their hands;º therefore my wrathº shall be kindledºª against this² place,º and shall not² be quenched.ºª 18 But to² the kingº of Judahº which sentºª you to enquireºª of² the LORD,º thus² shall ye sayºª to² him, Thus² saithºª the LORDº Godº of Israel,º [As touching] the wordsº which² thou hast heard;ºª 19 Because² thine heartº was tender,ºª and thou hast humbled¹ª thyself² beforeº² the LORD,º when thou heardestºª what² I spakeºª against² this² place,º and against² the inhabitantsºª thereof, that they should become² a desolationº and a curse,º and hast rentºª² thy clothes,º and weptºª beforeº me; I² also² have heardºª [thee], saithºª the LORD.º 20 Behold² therefore,² I will gatherºª thee unto² thy fathers,º and thou shalt be gatheredºª into² thy graveº in peace;º and thine eyesº shall not² seeºª all² the evilº which² I² will bringºª upon² this² place.º And they broughtºª² the kingº wordº again.¹ª
