Reconciliation with God

1 Now awhile Ezra° was praying° and making° confession°, weeping° and prostrating° himself bbefore° the house° of God°, a very° large° assembly°, men°, women° and children°, gathered° to him from Israel°; for the people° wept° bitterly°°. 2 Shecaniah° the son° of Jehiel°, one of the sons° of Elam°, said° to Ezra°, “aWe have been° unfaithful° to our God° and have Imarried° foreign° women° from the peoples° of the land°; yet now° there° is hope° for Israel° in spite° of this°. 3 So now° alet us make° a covenant° with our God° to put° away° all° the wives° and Ibtheir children°, according to the counsel° of IImy lord° and of cthose who tremble° at the commandment° of our God°; and let it be done° daccording to the law°. 4 Arise°! For [this] matter° is Iyour responsibility°, but we will be with you; abe courageous° and act°.”

5 ¶ Then Ezra° rose° and amade the leading° priests°, the Levites° and all° Israel°, take° oath° that they would do° according to this° Iproposal°; so they took° the oath°. 6 Then Ezra° arose° from before°° the house° of God° and went° into the chamber° of Jehohanan° the son° of Eliashib°. Although he went° there°, bhe did not eat° bread° nor° drink° water°, for he was mourning° over° the unfaithfulness° of the exiles°. 7 They made° a proclamation° throughout Judah° and Jerusalem° to all° the exiles°°, that they should assemble° at Jerusalem°, 8 and that whoever°° would not come° within three° days°, according to the counsel° of the leaders° and the elders°, all° his possessions° should be forfeited° and he himself° excluded° from the assembly° of the exiles°.

9 ¶ So all° the men° of Judah° and Benjamin° assembled° at Jerusalem° within the three° days°. It was the ninth° month° on the twentieth° of the month°, and all° the people° sat° in the open° square° [before] the house° of God°, atrembling° because° of this matter° and the heavy rain°. 10 Then Ezra° the priest° stood° up and said° to them, “You have been° unfaithful° and have married° foreign° wives° adding° to the guilt° of Israel°. 11 Now° therefore, amake° confession° to the LORD° God° of your fathers° and bdo° His will°; and cseparate° yourselves from the peoples° of the land° and from the foreign° wives°.” 12 Then all° the assembly° replied° with a loud° voice°, “That’s right°! As you have said°, so it is Iour duty° to do°. 13 But there are many° people°; it is the rainy° season° and we are not able° to stand° in the open°. Nor° [can] the task° [be done] in one° or two° days°, for we have transgressed° greatly° in this° matter°. 14 Let our leaders° Irepresent° the whole° assembly° and let all° those in our cities° who have married° foreign° wives° come° at appointed° times°, together° with the elders° and judges° of each° city°, until° the afierce° anger° of our God° on account° of this° matter° is turned° away° from us.” 15 Only° Jonathan° the son° of Asahel° and Jahzeiah° the son° of Tikvah° Iopposed° this°, with Meshullam° and Shabbethai° the Levite° supporting° them.

16 ¶ But the exiles°° did° so°. And IEzra° the priest° selected° men° [who were] heads° of fathers’° [households] for [each of] their father’s° households°, all° of them by name°. So they IIconvened° on the first° day° of the tenth° month° to investigate° the matter°. 17 They finished° [investigating] all° the men° who had married° foreign° wives° by the first° day° of the first° month°.

Shechaniah encourageth Ezra to reform the strange marriages.

Ezra mourning assembleth the people.

6 ¶ Then Ezraº rose upºª from beforeº² the houseº of God,º and went¹ª² into² the chamberº of Johananº the sonº of Eliashib:º and [when] he came¹ª² thither,² he did eatºª no² bread,º nor² drinkºª water:º for² he mournedºª because² of the transgressionº of them that had been carried away.º 7 And they made proclamationººª throughout Judahº and Jerusalemº unto all² the childrenº of the captivity,º that they should gather themselves togetherºª unto Jerusalem;º 8 And that whosoever²² would not² comeºª within threeº days,º according to the counselº of the princesº and the elders,º all² his substanceº should be forfeited,ºª and himself² separatedºª from the congregationº² of those that had been carried away.º

9 ¶ Then all² the men¹² of Judahº and Benjaminº gathered themselves togetherºª unto Jerusalemº within threeº days.º It² [was] the ninthº month,º on the twentiethº [day] of the month;º and all² the peopleº satºª in the streetº of the houseº of God,º tremblingºª because² of [this] matter,º and for the great rain.º² 10 And Ezraº the priestº stood up,ºª and saidºª unto² them, Ye² have transgressed,ºª and have takenºª strangeº wives,º to increaseºª² the trespassº of Israel.º 11 Now² therefore makeºª confessionº unto the LORDº Godº of your fathers,º and doºª his pleasure:º and separate¹ª yourselves² from the peopleº² of the land,º and from² the strangeº wives.º 12 Then all² the congregationº answeredºª and saidºª with a loudº voice,º As thou hast said,º² so² must we do.ºª 13 Butº the peopleº [are] many,º and [it is] a timeº of much rain,º and we are not² ableº to standºª without,º neither² [is this] a workº of oneº dayº or² two:º for² we are manyºª that have transgressedºª in this² thing.º 14 Let now² our rulersº of all² the congregationº stand,ºª and let all² them which² have takenºª strangeº wivesº in our citiesº comeºª at appointedºª times,º and with² them the eldersº of every city,º and the judgesºª thereof, until² the fierceº wrathº of our Godº for² this² matterº be turnedºª from² us.

15 ¶ Only² Jonathan¹² the sonº of Asahelº and Jahaziahº the sonº of Tikvahº were employedºª about² this² [matter]: and Meshullamº and Shabbethaiº the Leviteº helpedºª them. 16 And the childrenº of the captivityº did² so.¹ª² And Ezraº the priest,º [with] certain¹² chiefº of the fathers,º after the houseº of their fathers,º and all² of them by [their] names,º were separated,ºª and sat downºª in the firstº dayº of the tenthº monthº to examineºª the matter.º 17 And they made an endºª with all² the men¹² that had takenºª strangeº wivesº by² the firstº dayº of the firstº month.º
