David’s Messengers Abused

1 aNow it came° about after° this°, that Nahash° the king° of the sons° of Ammon° died°, and his son° became° king° in his place°. 2 Then David° said°, “I will show° kindness° to Hanun° the son° of Nahash°, because° his father° showed° kindness° to me.” So David° sent° messengers° to console° him concerning° his father°. And David’s° servants° came° into the land° of the sons° of Ammon° to Hanun° to console° him. 3 But the princes° of the sons° of Ammon° said° to Hanun°, “IDo you think° that David° is honoring° your father°, in that he has sent° comforters° to you? Have not his servants° come° to you to search° and to overthrow° and to spy° out the land°?” 4 So Hanun° took° David’s° servants° and shaved° them and cut° off° their garments° in the middle° as far° as their hips°, and sent° them away°. 5 Then [certain persons] went° and told° David° about° the men°. And he sent° to meet° them, for the men° were greatly° humiliated°. And the king° said°, “IStay° at Jericho° until°° your beards° grow°, and [then] return°.”

6 ¶ When the sons° of Ammon° saw° that they had made° themselves odious° to David°, Hanun° and the sons° of Ammon° sent° 1,000° talents° of silver° to hire° for themselves chariots° and horsemen° from Mesopotamia°, from Aram-maacah°° and afrom Zobah°. 7 So they hired° for themselves 32,000°°° chariots°, and the king° of Maacah° and his people°, who came° and camped° before° aMedeba°. And the sons° of Ammon° gathered° together from their cities° and came° to battle°. 8 When David° heard° [of it], he sent° Joab° and all° the army°, the mighty° men°. 9 The sons° of Ammon° came° out and drew° up in battle° array at the entrance° of the city°, and the kings° who° had come° were by themselves° in the field°.

Ammon and Aram Defeated

10 ¶ Now when Joab° saw° that the Ibattle° was set against° him in front° and in the rear°, he selected° from all° the choice° men of Israel° and they arrayed° themselves against° the Arameans°. 11 But the remainder° of the people° he placed° in the hand° of IAbshai° his brother°; and they arrayed° themselves against° the sons° of Ammon°. 12 He said°, “If° the Arameans° are too° strong° for me, then you shall help°° me; but if° the sons° of Ammon° are too° strong° for you, then I will help° you. 13 Be strong°, and let us show° ourselves courageous° for the sake° of our people° and for the cities° of our God°; and may the LORD° do° what° is good° in His sight°.” 14 So Joab° and the people° who° were with him drew° near° to the battle° against° the Arameans°, and they fled° before°° him. 15 When the sons° of Ammon° saw° that the Arameans° fled°, they also° fled° before°° Abshai° his brother° and entered° the city°. Then Joab° came° to Jerusalem°.

16 ¶ When the Arameans° saw° that they had been Idefeated° by Israel°, they sent° messengers° and brought° out the Arameans° who° were beyond°° the IIRiver°, with Shophach° the commander° of the army° of Hadadezer° IIIleading° them. 17 When it was told° David°, he gathered° all° Israel° together and crossed° the Jordan°, and came° upon them and drew° up in formation° against° them. And when David° drew° up in battle° array against° the Arameans°, they fought° against° him. 18 The Arameans° fled° before°° Israel°, and David° killed° of the Arameans° 7,000°° charioteers° and 40,000°° foot° soldiers°°, and put° to death° Shophach° the commander° of the army°. 19 So when the servants° of Hadadezer° saw° that they were Idefeated° by Israel°, they made° peace° with David° and served° him. Thus the Arameans° were not willing° to help° the sons° of Ammon° anymore°.

David's messengers, sent to comfort Hanun the son of Nahash, are villainously entreated.

The Ammonites, strengthened by the Syrians, are overcome by Joab and Abishai.

6 ¶ And when the childrenº of Ammonº sawºª that² they had made themselves odiousºª to² David,º Hanunº and the childrenº of Ammonº sentºª a thousandº talentsº of silverº to hireºª them chariotsº and horsemenº out of² Mesopotamia,º and out of² Syriamaachah,ºº and out of Zobah.º² 7 So they hiredºª thirtyº and twoº thousandº chariots,º and the kingº of Maachahº and his people;º who cameºª and pitchedºª beforeº Medeba.º And the childrenº of Ammonº gathered themselves togetherºª from their cities,º² and cameºª to battle.º 8 And when Davidº heardºª [of it], he sentºª² Joab,º and all² the hostº of the mighty men.º 9 And the childrenº of Ammonº came out,ºª and put the battle¹ in arrayºª² before the gateº of the city:º and the kingsº that² were comeºª [were] by themselves² in the field.º 10 Now when Joabº sawºª that² the battleº² was set² against² him beforeº and behind,º he chose² out¹ª of all²² the choiceºª of Israel,º and put [them] in arrayºª againstºª the Syrians.º 11 And the restº of the peopleº he deliveredºª unto the handº of Abishaiº his brother,º and they set [themselves] in arrayºª againstºª the childrenº of Ammon.º 12 And he said,ºª If² the Syriansº be too strongºª for² me, then thou shalt helpº² me: but if² the childrenº of Ammonº be too strongºª for² thee, then I will helpºª thee. 13 Be of good courage,ºª and let us behave ourselves valiantlyºª for² our people,º and for² the citiesº of our God:º and let the LORDº doºª [that which is] goodº in his sight.º 14 So Joabº and the peopleº that² [were] with² him drew nighºª beforeº the Syriansº unto the battle;º and they fledºª beforeº² him. 15 And when the childrenº of Ammonº sawºª that² the Syriansº were fled,ºª they² likewise² fledºª beforeº² Abishaiº his brother,º and enteredºª into the city.º Then Joabº cameºª to Jerusalem.º

Shophach, making a new supply of the Syrians, is slain by David.

16 ¶ And when the Syriansº sawºª that² they were put to the worseºª beforeº Israel,º they sentºª messengers,º and drew forthºª² the Syriansº that² [were] beyondº² the river:º and Shophachº the captainº of the hostº of Hadarezerº [went] beforeº them. 17 And it was toldºª David;º and he gatheredºª² all² Israel,º and passed overºª Jordan,º and cameºª upon² them, and set [the battle] in arrayºª² against² them. So when Davidº had put the battle¹ in arrayºª againstºª the Syrians,º they foughtºª with² him. 18 But the Syriansº fledºª beforeº² Israel;º and Davidº slewºª of the Syriansº² sevenº thousandº [men which fought in] chariots,º and fortyº thousandº footmen,ºº and killedºª Shophachº the captainº of the host.º 19 And when the servantsº of Hadarezerº sawºª that² they were put to the worseºª beforeº Israel,º they made peaceºª with² David,º and became his servants:ºª neither² wouldºª the Syriansº helpºª² the childrenº of Ammonº any more.²
