Proverbs 14:5
_ _ A faithful witness, etc. one tested to be such.
_ _ utter lies or, “breathe out lies” that is, habitually lies (Proverbs 6:19; compare Acts 9:1). Or the sense is, that habitual truthfulness, or lying, will be evinced in witness-bearing. |
Proverbs 14:5
_ _ In the administration of justice much depends upon the witnesses, and therefore it is necessary to the common good that witnesses be principled as they ought to be; for, 1. A witness that is conscientious will not dare to give in a testimony that is in the least untrue, nor, for good-will or ill-will, represent a thing otherwise than according to the best of his knowledge, whoever is pleased or displeased, and then judgment runs down like a river. 2. But a witness that will be bribed, and biassed, and browbeaten, will utter lies (and not stick nor startle at it), with as much readiness and assurance as if what he said were all true. |
Proverbs 14:5
A faithful witness will not lie: but (e) a false witness will utter lies.
(e) For the maintenance of his own ambition, and not for God's glory, as Simon Magus. |
Proverbs 14:25 A true witness delivereth souls: but a deceitful [ witness] speaketh lies. Proverbs 6:19 A false witness [ that] speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. Proverbs 12:17 [ He that] speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit. Proverbs 13:5 A righteous [ man] hateth lying: but a wicked [ man] is loathsome, and cometh to shame. Proverbs 19:5 A false witness shall not be unpunished, and [ he that] speaketh lies shall not escape. Proverbs 19:9 A false witness shall not be unpunished, and [ he that] speaketh lies shall perish. Exodus 20:16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. Exodus 23:1 Thou shalt not raise a false report: put not thine hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness. 1 Kings 21:13 And there came in two men, children of Belial, and sat before him: and the men of Belial witnessed against him, [ even] against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did blaspheme God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died. 1 Kings 22:12- 14 And all the prophets prophesied so, saying, Go up to Ramothgilead, and prosper: for the LORD shall deliver [ it] into the king's hand. ... And Micaiah said, [ As] the LORD liveth, what the LORD saith unto me, that will I speak.
