Jeremiah 48:2
_ _ no more praise (Isaiah 16:14).
_ _ in Heshbon The foe having taken Heshbon, the chief city of Moab (Jeremiah 48:45), in it devise evil against Moab (“it”) saying, Come, etc. Heshbon was midway between the rivers Arnon and Jabbok; it was the residence of Sihon, king of the Amorites, and afterwards a Levitical city in Gad (Numbers 21:26). There is a play on words in the Hebrew, “Heshbon, Hashbu.” Heshbon means a place of devising or counsel. The city, heretofore called the seat of counsel, shall find other counselors, namely, those who devise its destruction.
_ _ thou shall be cut down ... Madmen rather, by a play on words on the meaning of madmen (“silence”), Thou shalt be brought to silence, so as well to deserve thy name (Isaiah 15:1). Thou shalt not dare to utter a sound. |
Jeremiah 48:2
Heshbon Heshbon was one of the principal cities of the Moabites. Probably the enemies sat there in counsel, when they had taken it, against the other parts of the country. |
Jeremiah 48:2

Jeremiah 48:17 All ye that are about him, bemoan him; and all ye that know his name, say, How is the strong staff broken, [and] the beautiful rod! Isaiah 16:14 But now the LORD hath spoken, saying, Within three years, as the years of an hireling, and the glory of Moab shall be contemned, with all that great multitude; and the remnant [shall be] very small [and] feeble.

- Heshbon:
Jeremiah 48:34-35 From the cry of Heshbon [even] unto Elealeh, [and even] unto Jahaz, have they uttered their voice, from Zoar [even] unto Horonaim, [as] an heifer of three years old: for the waters also of Nimrim shall be desolate. ... Moreover I will cause to cease in Moab, saith the LORD, him that offereth in the high places, and him that burneth incense to his gods. Numbers 21:25-30 And Israel took all these cities: and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the villages thereof. ... We have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon, and we have laid them waste even unto Nophah, which [reacheth] unto Medeba. Numbers 32:37 And the children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kirjathaim, Isaiah 15:5 My heart shall cry out for Moab; his fugitives [shall flee] unto Zoar, an heifer of three years old: for by the mounting up of Luhith with weeping shall they go it up; for in the way of Horonaim they shall raise up a cry of destruction. Isaiah 16:8-9 For the fields of Heshbon languish, [and] the vine of Sibmah: the lords of the heathen have broken down the principal plants thereof, they are come [even] unto Jazer, they wandered [through] the wilderness: her branches are stretched out, they are gone over the sea. ... Therefore I will bewail with the weeping of Jazer the vine of Sibmah: I will water thee with my tears, O Heshbon, and Elealeh: for the shouting for thy summer fruits and for thy harvest is fallen.

Jeremiah 48:42 And Moab shall be destroyed from [being] a people, because he hath magnified [himself] against the LORD. Jeremiah 31:36 If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, [then] the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever. Jeremiah 33:24 Considerest thou not what this people have spoken, saying, The two families which the LORD hath chosen, he hath even cast them off? thus they have despised my people, that they should be no more a nation before them. Jeremiah 46:28 Fear thou not, O Jacob my servant, saith the LORD: for I [am] with thee; for I will make a full end of all the nations whither I have driven thee: but I will not make a full end of thee, but correct thee in measure; yet will I not leave thee wholly unpunished. Esther 3:8-14 And Haman said unto king Ahasuerus, There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the people in all the provinces of thy kingdom; and their laws [are] diverse from all people; neither keep they the king's laws: therefore it [is] not for the king's profit to suffer them. ... The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province was published unto all people, that they should be ready against that day. Psalms 83:4-8 They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from [being] a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance. ... Assur also is joined with them: they have holpen the children of Lot. Selah.
