The preface of Luke to his whole Gospel.

1 ¶ Forasmuchº as manyº have taken in handºª to set forth in orderºª a declarationº ofº those thingsº which are most surely believedºª amongº us,º 2 Even¹ as² they deliveredºª them unto us,º which¹ from¹ the beginning¹ wereºª²² eyewitnesses,º andº ministersº of the² word;º 3 It seemed¹ª good² to me also,º having had perfectº understandingºª of all thingsº from the very first,º to writeºª unto theeº in order,º most excellentº Theophilus,º 4 Thatº thou mightest knowºª the² certaintyº of¹ those things,º whereinº² thou hast been instructed.ºª

The conception of John the Baptist,

5 ¶ There wasºª inº the² daysº of Herod,º the² kingº of Judaea,º a certainº priestº namedº Zacharias,º ofº the courseº of Abia:º andº hisº wifeº [was] ofº the² daughtersº of Aaron,º andº herº nameº [was] Elisabeth.º 6 Andº they wereºª bothº righteousº beforeº God,º walkingºª inº allº the² commandmentsº andº ordinancesº of the² Lordº blameless.º 7 Andº they¹ hadºª² noº child,º because¹ that² Elisabethº wasºª barren,º andº they¹ bothº wereºª [now] well strickenºª inº years.º 8 Andº it came to pass,ºª that while¹ heº executed the priest's officeºª beforeº Godº inº the² orderº of his¹² course,º 9 Accordingº to the² customº of the² priest's office,º his lot¹ª was² to burn incenseºª when he wentºª intoº the² templeº of the² Lord.º 10 Andº the² wholeº multitudeº of the² peopleº wereºª prayingºª withoutº at the² timeº of incense.º 11 Andº there appearedºª unto himº an angelº of the Lordº standingºª onº the right sideº of the² altarº of incense.º 12 Andº when Zachariasº sawºª [him], he was troubled,ºª andº fearº fellºª uponº him.º 13 Butº the² angelº saidºª untoº him,º Fearºªª not,º Zacharias:º forº thyº prayerº is heard;ºª andº thyº wifeº Elisabethº shall bearºª theeº a son,º andº thou shalt callºª hisº nameº John.º 14 Andº thouº shalt haveºª joyº andº gladness;º andº manyº shall rejoiceºª atº hisº birth.º 15 Forº he shall beºª greatº in the sightº of the² Lord,º andº shall drinkºª neitherº wineº norº strong drink;º andº he shall be filledºª with the Holyº Ghost,º evenº fromº his¹² mother'sº womb.º 16 Andº manyº of the² childrenº of Israelº shall he turnºª toº the Lordº theirº God.º 17 Andº heº shall goºª beforeº himº in¹ the spiritº andº powerº of Elias,º to turnºª the heartsº of the fathersº toº the children,º andº the disobedientº toº the wisdomº of the just;º to make readyºª a peopleº preparedºª for the Lord.º 18 Andº Zachariasº saidºª untoº the² angel,º Wherebyºº shall I knowºª this?º forº Iº amºª an old man,º andº myº wifeº well strickenºª inº years.º¹ 19 Andº the² angelº answeringºª saidºª unto him,º Iº amºª Gabriel,º that standºª in the presenceº of God;º andº am sentºª to speakºª untoº thee,º andº to shew¹ª thee¹ these¹ glad tidings.ºª²² 20 And,º behold,ºª thou¹ª shalt be² dumb,ºª andº notº ableºª to speak,ºª untilº the² dayº that¹ these thingsº shall be performed,ºª becauseº¹ thou² believestºª notº myº words,º whichº shall be fulfilledºª inº their¹² season.º 21 Andº the² peopleº waited¹ª¹ª for²² Zacharias,º andº marvelledºª that¹ heº tarried so longºª inº the² temple.º 22 Andº when he came out,ºª he couldºª notº speakºª unto them:º andº they perceivedºª thatº he had seenºª a visionº inº the² temple:º forº heº beckonedººªª unto them,º andº remainedºª speechless.º 23 Andº it came to pass,ºª that, as soon asº the² daysº of hisº ministrationº were accomplished,ºª he departedºª toº his own¹² house.º 24 Andº afterº thoseº daysº hisº wifeº Elisabethº conceived,ºª andº hidºª herselfº fiveº months,º saying,ºª 25 ¹ Thusº hath¹ª the² Lordº dealtºª with meº inº the² daysº whereinº he looked onºª [me], to take awayºª myº reproachº amongº men.º

and of Christ.

26 Andº inº the² sixthº monthº the² angelº Gabrielº was sentºª fromº Godº untoº a cityº of Galilee,º namedº¹ Nazareth,º 27 Toº a virginº espousedºª to a manº whoseº nameº was Joseph,º ofº the houseº of David;º andº the² virgin'sº nameº [was] Mary.º 28 Andº the² angelº came inºª untoº her,º and said,ºª Hail,ºª [thou that art] highly favoured,ºª the² Lordº [is] withº thee:º blessedºª [art] thouº amongº women.º 29 Andº when she² sawºª [him], she was troubledºª atº hisº saying,º andº cast in her mindºª what mannerº of salutationº thisº should be.ºª 30 Andº the² angelº saidºª unto her,º Fearºªª not,º Mary:º forº thou hast foundºª favourº withº God.º 31 And,º behold,ºª thou shalt conceiveºª inº thy womb,º andº bring forthºª a son,º andº shalt callºª hisº nameº JESUS.º 32 Heº shall beºª great,º andº shall be calledºª the Sonº of the Highest:º andº the Lordº Godº shall giveºª unto himº the² throneº of hisº fatherº David:º 33 Andº he shall reignºª overº the² houseº of Jacobº for¹ ever;º² andº of hisº kingdomº there shall beºª noº end.º 34 Thenº saidºª Maryº untoº the² angel,º Howº shall¹ª thisº be,ºª seeingº I knowºª notº a man?º 35 Andº the² angelº answeredºª and saidºª unto her,º The Holyº Ghostº shall comeºª uponº thee,º andº the powerº of the Highestº shall overshadowºª thee:º thereforeº alsoº that holy thingº which shall be bornºª ofº theeº shall be calledºª the Sonº of God.º 36 And,º behold,ºª thyº cousinº Elisabeth,º sheº hath¹ª alsoº conceivedºª a sonº inº her¹² old age:º andº thisº isºª the sixthº monthº with her,º who¹ was calledºª barren.º 37 Forº withº Godº nothingººº shall be impossible.ºª 38 Andº Maryº said,ºª Beholdºª the² handmaidº of the Lord;º be² it¹ª unto meº accordingº to thyº word.º Andº the² angelº departedºª fromº her.º

The prophecy of Elisabeth, and of Mary, concerning Christ.

39 Andº Maryº aroseºª inº thoseº days,º and wentºª intoº the² hill countryº withº haste,º intoº a cityº of Juda;º 40 Andº enteredºª intoº the² houseº of Zacharias,º andº salutedºª Elisabeth.º 41 Andº it came to pass,ºª that, whenº Elisabethº heardºª the² salutationº of Mary,º the² babeº leapedºª inº herº womb;º andº Elisabethº was filledºª with the Holyº Ghost:º 42 Andº she spake outºª with a loudº voice,º andº said,ºª Blessedºª [art] thouº amongº women,º andº blessedºª [is] the² fruitº of thyº womb.º 43 Andº whenceº [is] thisº to me,º thatº the² motherº of myº Lordº should comeºª toº me?º 44 For,º lo,ºª as soon asº the² voiceº of thyº salutationº soundedºª inº mineº ears,º the² babeº leapedºª inº myº wombº forº joy.º 45 Andº blessedº [is] she that believed:ºª forº there shall beºª a performanceº of those things which were toldºª herº fromº the Lord.º 46 Andº Maryº said,ºª Myº soulº doth magnifyºª the² Lord,º 47 Andº myº spiritº hath rejoicedºª inº Godº myº Saviour.º 48 Forº he hath regardedºª¹ the² low estateº of his¹² handmaiden:º for,º behold,ºª fromº henceforthº allº generationsº shall call¹ª me¹ blessed.ºª² 49 Forº he that is mightyº hath doneºª to meº great things;º andº holyº [is] hisº name.º 50 Andº hisº mercyº [is] on them that fearºª himº fromº generationº to generation.º 51 He hath shewedºª strengthº withº his¹² arm;º he hath scatteredºª the proudº in the imaginationº of theirº hearts.º 52 He hath put downºª the mightyº fromº [their] seats,º andº exaltedºª them of low degree.º 53 He hath filledºª the hungryºª with good things;º andº the richºª he hath sent¹ª empty¹ away.ºª² 54 He hath holpenºª his¹² servantº Israel,º in remembranceºª of [his] mercy;º 55 Asº he spakeºª toº ourº fathers,º to Abraham,º andº to hisº seedº for¹ ever.º² 56 Andº Maryº abodeºª withº herº aboutº threeº months,º andº returnedºª toº her own¹² house.º

The nativity and circumcision of John.

57 Nowº Elisabeth'sº full¹ª timeº cameºª that sheº should be delivered;ºª andº she brought forthºª a son.º 58 Andº her² neighboursº andº her¹ cousinsº heardºª howº the Lordº had shewed great¹ª mercyº¹²² uponº her;º andº they rejoiced¹ª with² her.º 59 Andº it came to pass,ºª that onº the² eighthº dayº they cameºª to circumciseºª the² child;º andº they calledºª himº Zacharias,º afterº the² nameº of hisº father.º 60 Andº hisº motherº answeredºª and said,ºª Notº [so]; butº he shall be calledºª John.º 61 Andº they saidºª untoº her,º¹ There isºª noneº ofº thyº kindredº thatº is calledºª by thisº name.º 62 And¹² they made signsºª to hisº father,º howº¹ he would haveºª² himº called.ºª 63 Andº he asked² for¹ª a writing table,º and wrote,ºª saying,ºª Hisº nameº isºª John.º Andº they marvelledºª all.º 64 Andº hisº mouthº was openedºª immediately,º andº hisº tongueº [loosed], andº he spake,ºª and praisedºª God.º 65 Andº fearº cameºª onº allº that dwelt round aboutºª them:º andº allº theseº sayingsº were noised abroadºª throughoutº allº the² hill countryº of Judaea.º 66 Andº allº they that heardºª [them] laid [them] upºª inº their¹² hearts,º saying,ºª What¹ manner¹² of² childº shall¹ª thisº be!ºª Andº the handº of the Lordº wasºª withº him.º

The prophecy of Zacharias, both of Christ,

67 Andº hisº fatherº Zachariasº was filledºª with the Holyº Ghost,º andº prophesied,ºª saying,ºª 68 Blessedº [be] the Lordº Godº of Israel;º forº he hath visitedºª andº redeemedº² his¹² people,º¹ª 69 Andº hath raised upºª an hornº of salvationº for usº inº the² houseº of his¹² servantº David;º 70 Asº he spakeºª byº the mouthº of his¹² holyº prophets,º whichº have been since¹ the world began:º² 71 That we should be savedº fromº ourº enemies,º andº fromº the handº of allº that hateºª us;º 72 To performºª the mercyº [promised] toº ourº fathers,º andº to rememberºª his¹² holyº covenant;º 73 The oathº whichº he swareºª toº ourº fatherº Abraham,º 74 That he would grantºª unto us,º that we being deliveredºª out ofº the handº of ourº enemiesº might serveºª himº without fear,º 75 Inº holinessº andº righteousnessº beforeº him,º allº the² daysº of ourº life.º

and of John.

76 Andº thou,º child,º shalt be calledºª the prophetº of the Highest:º forº thou shalt goºª beforeº the faceº of the Lordº to prepareºª hisº ways;º 77 To giveºª knowledgeº of salvationº unto hisº peopleº byº the remissionº of theirº sins,º 78 Throughº the tender¹ mercyº² of ourº God;º wherebyºº the dayspringº fromº on highº hath visitedºª us,º 79 To give lightºª to them that sitºª inº darknessº andº [in] the shadowº of death,º to guideºª ourº feetº intoº the wayº of peace.º 80 Andº the² childº grew,ºª andº waxed strongºª in spirit,º andº wasºª inº the² desertsº tillº the dayº of hisº shewingº untoº Israel.º²
