Sundry observations of moral virtues, and their contrary vices (10-24).

1 ¶ When² thou sittestºª to eatºª with² a ruler,ºª consider¹ª diligentlyºª² what² [is] beforeº thee: 2 And putºª a knifeº to thy throat,º if² thou² [be] a man² given¹ to appetite.º 3 Be not² desirousºª of his dainties:º for they² [are] deceitfulº meat.º 4 Labourºª not² to be rich:ºª ceaseºª from² thine own wisdom.º 5 Wilt thou setºªªª thine eyesº upon that which is not?² for² [riches] certainly¹ª makeºª themselves wings;º they fly awayºªªª as an eagleº toward heaven.º 6 Eatºª thou not²² the breadº of [him that hath] an evilº eye,º neither² desireºª thou his dainty meats:º 7 For² as² he thinkethºª in his heart,º so² [is] he:² Eatºª and drink,ºª saithºª he to thee; but his heartº [is] not² with thee.² 8 The morselº [which] thou hast eatenºª shalt thou vomit up,ºª and loseºª thy sweetº words.º 9 Speakºª not² in the earsº of a fool:º for² he will despiseºª the wisdomº of thy words.º 10 Removeºª not² the oldº landmark;º and enterºª not² into the fieldsº of the fatherless:º 11 For² their redeemerºª [is] mighty;º he² shall pleadºª² their causeº with² thee. 12 Applyºª thine heartº unto instruction,º and thine earsº to the wordsº of knowledge.º 13 Withholdºª not² correctionº from the child:º² for² [if] thou beatestºª him with the rod,º he shall not² die.ºª 14 Thou² shalt beatºª him with the rod,º and shalt deliverºª his soulº from hell.º² 15 My son,º if² thine heartº be wise,ºª my heartº shall rejoice,ºª even² mine.º 16 Yea, my reinsº shall rejoice,ºª when thy lipsº speakºª right things.º 17 Let not² thine heartº envyºª sinners:º but² [be thou] in the fearº of the LORDº all² the dayº long. 18 For² surely² there isº an end;º and thine expectationº shall not² be cut off.ºª 19 Hearºª thou,² my son,º and be wise,ºª and guideºª thine heartº in the way.º 20 Be² not² among winebibbers;ººª among riotous eatersºª of flesh:º 21 For² the drunkardºª and the gluttonºª shall come to poverty:ºª and drowsinessº shall clotheºª [a man] with rags.º 22 Hearkenºª unto thy fatherº that² begatºª thee, and despiseºª not² thy motherº when² she is old.ºª 23 Buyºª the truth,º and sellºª [it] not;² [also] wisdom,º and instruction,º and understanding.º 24 The fatherº of the righteousº shall greatly¹ rejoice:ºª and he that begettethºª a wiseº [child] shall have joyºª of him. 25 Thy fatherº and thy motherº shall be glad,ºª and she that bareºª thee shall rejoice.ºª 26 My son,º giveºª me thine heart,º and let thine eyesº observeºª¹ my ways.º 27 For² a whoreºª [is] a deepº ditch;º and a strange² woman¹ [is] a narrowº pit.º 28 She² also² lieth in waitºª as [for] a prey,º and increasethºª the transgressorsºª among men.º 29 Who² hath woe?º who² hath sorrow?º who² hath contentions?ºª¹ who² hath babbling?º who² hath woundsº without cause?º who² hath rednessº of eyes?º 30 They that tarry longºª at² the wine;º they that goºª to seekºª mixed wine.º 31 Lookºª not² thou upon the wineº when² it is red,ºª when² it givethºª his colourº in the cup,ºª¹ [when] it moveth¹ª itself² aright.º 32 At the lastº it bitethºª like a serpent,º and stingethºª like an adder.º 33 Thine eyesº shall beholdºª strange women,ºª and thine heartº shall utterºª perverse things.º 34 Yea, thou shalt be² as he that lieth downºª in the midstº of the sea,º or as he that liethºª upon the topº of a mast.º 35 They have strickenºª me, [shalt thou say, and] I was not² sick;ºª they have beatenºª me, [and] I feltºª [it] not:² when² shall I awake?ºª I will seekºª it yetºª again.²
