The Choice Young Men
1 In the third° year° of the reign° of aJehoiakim° king° of Judah°, bNebuchadnezzar° king° of Babylon° came° to Jerusalem° and besieged°° it. 2 The aLord° gave° Jehoiakim° king° of Judah° into his hand°, along with some°° of the bvessels° of the house° of God°; and he brought° them to the land° of cShinar°, to the house° of his Igod°, and he brought° the vessels° into the treasury°° of his Idgod°.

3 ¶ Then the king° Iordered° Ashpenaz°, the chief° of his IIofficials°, to bring° in some° of the sons° of Israel°, including some° of the IIIroyal° afamily° and of the nobles°, 4 youths° in whom° was ano°° defect°, who were good-looking°°, showing° bintelligence° in every° [branch of] wisdom°, endowed° with understanding° and discerning° knowledge°, and who° had ability° for Iserving° in the king’s° IIcourt°; and [he ordered him] to teach° them the IIIliterature° and clanguage° of the dChaldeans°. 5 The king° appointed° for them a daily° ration° from the aking’s° choice° food° and from the wine° which° he drank°, and [appointed] that they should be Ieducated° three° years°, at the end° of which they were to IIbenter° the king’s° personal° service°°. 6 Now among them from the sons° of Judah° were aDaniel°, Hananiah°, Mishael° and Azariah°. 7 Then the commander° of the officials° assigned° [new] names° to them; and to Daniel° he assigned° [the name] aBelteshazzar°, to Hananiah° bShadrach°, to Mishael° bMeshach° and to Azariah° bAbed-nego°.

8 ¶ But Daniel° Imade° up his mind° that he would not adefile° himself with the bking’s° choice° food° or with the cwine° which° he drank°; so he sought° [permission] from the commander° of the officials° that he might not defile° himself. 9 Now God° granted° Daniel° Iafavor° and compassion° in the sight° of the commander° of the officials°, 10 and the commander° of the officials° said° to Daniel°, “I am afraid° of my lord° the king°, who° has appointed° your food° and your drink°; for why° should he see° your faces° looking° more° haggard° than° the youths° who° are your own age°? Then you would Imake me forfeit° my head° to the king°.” 11 But Daniel° said° to the overseer° whom° the commander° of the officials° had appointed° over° Daniel°, Hananiah°, Mishael° and Azariah°, 12 “Please° test° your servants° for ten° days°, and let us be agiven° some° vegetables° to eat° and water° to drink°. 13 Then let our appearance° be Iobserved° in your presence° and the appearance° of the youths° who° are eating° the king’s° choice° food°; and deal° with your servants° according to what° you see°.”

14 ¶ So he listened° to them in this° matter° and tested° them for ten° days°. 15 At the end° of ten° days° their appearance° seemed° abetter° and Ithey were fatter°° than° all° the youths° who° had been eating° the king’s° choice° food°. 16 So the overseer° continued° to Iwithhold° their choice° food° and the wine° they were to drink°, and kept° agiving° them vegetables°.
18 ¶ Then at the end° of the days° which° the king° had Ispecified° IIfor presenting° them, the commander° of the officials° IIIpresented° them before° Nebuchadnezzar°. 19 The king° talked° with them, and out of them all° not one was found° like aDaniel°, Hananiah°, Mishael° and Azariah°; so they Ibentered° the king’s° personal° service°°. 20 As for every° matter° of awisdom° Iand understanding° about which° the king° consulted° them, he found° them bten° times° cbetter° than° all° the IIdmagicians° [and] conjurers° who° [were] in all° his realm°. 21 And Daniel° Icontinued° until° the afirst° year° of Cyrus° the king°.

8 ¶ But Danielº purposedºª in² his heartº that² he would not² defile¹ª himself² with the portion¹ª of the king's¹ meat,º² nor with the wineº which he drank:º therefore he requestedºª of the princeº² of the eunuchsº that² he might not² defile¹ª himself.² 9 Now Godº had broughtºª² Danielº into favourº and tender loveº withº the princeº of the eunuchs.º 10 And the princeº of the eunuchsº saidºª unto Daniel,º I² fear¹²² my lordº the king,º who² hath appointedºª² your meatº and your drink:º for² why² should he seeºª² your facesº worse likingºª than² the childrenº which² [are] of your sort?º then shall ye make [me] endangerºª² my headº to the king.º 11 Then saidºª Danielº to² Melzar,º whom² the princeº of the eunuchsº had setºª over² Daniel,º Hananiah,º Mishael,º and Azariah,º 12 Proveºª² thy servants,º I beseech thee,² tenº days;º and let them giveºª us pulseº to eat,ºª and waterº to drink.ºª 13 Then let our countenancesº be looked uponºª beforeº thee, and the countenanceº of the childrenº that eatºª² of the portion¹ª of the king's¹ meat:º² and as² thou seest,ºª dealºª with² thy servants.º 14 So he consentedºª to them in this² matter,º and provedºª them tenº days.º 15 And at the endº² of tenº daysº their countenancesº appearedºª fairerº and fatterº in fleshº than² all² the childrenº which did eatºª² the portion¹ª of the king's¹ meat.º² 16 Thus Melzarº took awayºª² the portion of their meat,º and the wineº that they should drink;º and gaveºª them pulse.º

17 ¶ As for these² fourº children,º Godº gaveºª them knowledgeº and skillºª in all² learningº and wisdom:º and Danielº had understandingºª in all² visionsº and dreams.º 18 Now at the endº² of the daysº that² the kingº had saidºª he should bring¹ª them in,² then the princeº of the eunuchsº brought¹ª them in² beforeº Nebuchadnezzar.º 19 And the kingº communedºª with² them; and among them all²² was foundºª none² like Daniel,º Hananiah,º Mishael,º and Azariah:º therefore stoodºª they beforeº the king.º 20 And in all² mattersº of wisdomº [and] understanding,º that² the kingº enquiredºª of² them, he foundºª them ten² times¹² better¹ than² all² the magiciansº [and] astrologersº that² [were] in all² his realm.º 21 And Danielº continued² [even] unto² the firstº yearº of kingº Cyrus.º
