The solemn offering of Solomon at Gibeon.

1 ¶ And Solomonº the sonº of Davidº was strengthenedºª in² his kingdom,º and the LORDº his Godº [was] with² him, and magnifiedºª him exceedingly.º 2 Then Solomonº spakeºª unto all² Israel,º to the captainsº of thousandsº and of hundreds,º and to the judges,ºª and to every² governorº in all² Israel,º the chiefº of the fathers.º 3 So Solomon,º and all² the congregationº with² him, went¹ª² to the high placeº that² [was] at Gibeon;º for² there² was² the tabernacleº of the congregationº of God,º which² Mosesº the servantº of the LORDº had madeºª in the wilderness.º 4 Butº the arkº of Godº had Davidº brought upºª from Kirjathjearimº² to [the place which] Davidº had preparedºª for it: for² he had pitchedºª a tentº for it at Jerusalem.º 5 Moreover the brasenº altar,º that² Bezaleelº the sonº of Uri,º the sonº of Hur,º had made,ºª he putºª beforeº the tabernacleº of the LORD:º and Solomonº and the congregationº soughtºª unto it. 6 And Solomonº went upºª thither² to² the brasenº altarº beforeº the LORD,º which² [was] at the tabernacleº of the congregation,º and offeredºª a thousandº burnt offeringsº upon² it.

Solomon's choice of wisdom is blessed by God.

7 ¶ In that² nightº did Godº appearºª unto Solomon,º and saidºª unto him, Askºª what² I shall giveºª thee. 8 And Solomonº saidºª unto God,º Thou² hast shewedºª greatº mercyº unto² Davidº my father,º and hast made me to reignºª in his stead.² 9 Now,² O LORDº God,º let thy promiseº unto² Davidº my fatherº be established:ºª for² thou² hast made me kingºª over² a peopleº like the dustº of the earthº in multitude.º 10 Giveºª me now² wisdomº and knowledge,º that I may go outºª and come inºª beforeº this² people:º for² who² can judgeºª this²² thy people,º [that is so] great?º 11 And Godº saidºª to Solomon,º Because²² this² was² in² thine heart,º and thou hast not² askedºª riches,º wealth,º or honour,º nor the lifeº of thine enemies,ºª neither² yet² hast askedºª long¹ life;º² but hast askedºª wisdomº and knowledgeº for thyself, that² thou mayest judgeºª² my people,º over² whom² I have made thee king:ºª 12 Wisdomº and knowledgeº [is] grantedºª unto thee; and I will giveºª thee riches,º and wealth,º and honour,º such as²² none² of the kingsº have had² that² [have been] beforeº thee, neither² shall there any afterº thee have² the like.²

13 ¶ Then Solomonº cameºª [from his journey] to the high placeº that² [was] at Gibeonº to Jerusalem,º from beforeº² the tabernacleº of the congregation,º and reignedºª over² Israel.º 14 And Solomonº gatheredºª chariotsº and horsemen:º and he had² a thousandº and fourº hundredº chariots,º and twelveºº thousandº horsemen,º which he placed¹ª² in the chariotº cities,º and with² the kingº at Jerusalem.º 15 And the kingº madeºª² silverº and goldº at Jerusalemº [as plenteous] as stones,º and cedar treesº madeºª he as the sycomore treesº that² [are] in the valeº for abundance.º 16 And Solomonº had horsesº brought¹ out² of Egypt,º² and linen yarn:º the king'sº merchantsºª receivedºª the linen yarnº at a price.º 17 And they fetched up,ºª and brought forthºª out of Egyptº² a chariotº for sixº hundredº [shekels] of silver,º and an horseº for an hundredº and fifty:º and so² brought they outºª [horses] for all² the kingsº of the Hittites,º and for the kingsº of Syria,º by their means.º
