Moses’ Last Counsel

1 So Moses° went° and spoke° these° words° to all° Israel°. 2 And he said° to them, “I am aa hundred° and twenty° years° old° today°; bI am no° longer° able° to come° and go°, and the LORD° has said° to me, ‘cYou shall not cross° this° Jordan°.’ 3 aIt is the LORD° your God° who will cross° ahead° of you; He will destroy° these° nations° before° you, and you shall dispossess° them. bJoshua° is the one who will cross° ahead° of you, just° as the LORD° has spoken°. 4 The LORD° will do° to them just° as He did° to Sihon° and Og°, the kings° of the Amorites°, and to their land°, when° He destroyed° them. 5 aThe LORD° will deliver° them up before° you, and you shall do° to them according to all° the commandments° which° I have commanded° you. 6 aBe strong° and courageous°, bdo not be afraid° or tremble° at them, for cthe LORD° your God° is the one who goes° with you. dHe will not fail° you or forsake° you.”

7 ¶ Then Moses° called° to Joshua° and said° to him in the sight° of all° Israel°, “aBe strong° and courageous°, for you shall go° with this° people° into the land° which° the LORD° has sworn° to their fathers° to give° them, and you shall give° it to them as an inheritance°. 8 aThe LORD° is the one who goes° ahead° of you; He will be with you. bHe will not fail° you or forsake° you. Do not fear° or be dismayed°.”

9 ¶ So Moses° wrote° this° law° and gave° it to the priests°, the sons° of Levi° awho carried° the ark° of the covenant° of the LORD°, and to all° the elders° of Israel°. 10 Then Moses° commanded° them, saying°, “At the end° of [every] seven° years°, at the time° of athe year° of remission° of debts, at the bFeast° of Booths°, 11 when all° Israel° comes° ato appear° before° the LORD° your God° at bthe place° which° He will choose°, cyou shall read° this° law° in front° of all° Israel° in their hearing°. 12 Assemble° the people°, the men° and the women° and children° and Ithe alien° who° is in your IItown°, so° that they may hear° and alearn° and fear° the LORD° your God°, and be careful° to observe° all° the words° of this° law°. 13 Their children°, who° have not known°, will hear° and learn° to fear° the LORD° your God°, as long°° as you live° on the land° Iwhich° you are about to cross° the Jordan° to IIpossess°.”

Israel Will Fall Away

14 ¶ Then the LORD° said° to Moses°, “Behold°, Iathe time° for you to die° is near°; call° Joshua°, and present° yourselves at the tent° of meeting°, that I may commission° him.” bSo Moses° and Joshua° went° and presented° themselves at the tent° of meeting°. 15 aThe LORD° appeared° in the tent° in a pillar° of cloud°, and the pillar° of cloud° stood° at the doorway° of the tent°. 16 The LORD° said° to Moses°, “Behold°, ayou are about to lie° down° with your fathers°; and bthis° people° will arise° and play° the harlot° with the strange° gods° of the land°, into the midst° of which° they are going°, and cwill forsake° Me and break° My covenant° which° I have made° with them. 17 aThen My anger° will be kindled° against them in that day°, and bI will forsake° them and chide° My face° from them, and they will be consumed°, and many° evils° and troubles° will come° upon them; so that they will say° in that day°, ‘dIs it not because°° our God° is not among° us that these° evils° have come° upon us?’ 18 But I will surely° hide° My face° in that day° because° of all° the evil° which° they will do°, for they will turn° to other° gods°.

19 ¶ “Now° therefore, awrite° this° song° for yourselves, and teach° it to the sons° of Israel°; put° it Ion their lips°, so° that this° song° may be a witness° for Me against the sons° of Israel°. 20 aFor when I bring° them into the land° flowing° with milk° and honey°, which° I swore° to their fathers°, and they have eaten° and are satisfied° and bbecome° Iprosperous°, then they will turn° to other° gods° and serve° them, and spurn° Me and break° My covenant°. 21 Then it shall come° about, awhen° many° evils° and troubles° have come° upon them, that this° song° will testify° before° them as a witness° (for it shall not be forgotten° from the Ilips° of their descendants°); for bI know° their intent° which° they are IIdeveloping° today°, before° I have brought° them into the land° which° I swore°.” 22 aSo Moses° wrote° this° song° the same° day°, and taught° it to the sons° of Israel°.

23aThen He commissioned° Joshua° the son° of Nun°, and said°, “bBe strong° and courageous°, for you shall bring° the sons° of Israel° into the land° which° I swore° to them, and cI will be with you.”

24 ¶ It came° about, when Moses° finished° writing° the words° of this° law° in a book° until° they were complete°, 25 that Moses° commanded° the Levites° awho carried° the ark° of the covenant° of the LORD°, saying°, 26 “Take° this° book° of the law° and place° it beside°° the ark° of the covenant° of the LORD° your God°, that it may Iremain° there° as a witness° against you. 27 For I know° ayour rebellion° and byour Istubbornness°°; behold°, while I am still° alive° with you today°, you have been° rebellious° against° the LORD°; how° much°° more°°, then, after° my death°? 28 Assemble° to me all° the elders° of your tribes° and your officers°, that I may speak° these° words° in their hearing° and acall° the heavens° and the earth° to witness° against them. 29 For I know° that after° my death° you will aact° corruptly° and turn° from the way° which° I have commanded° you; and evil° will befall° you in the latter° days°, for you will do° that which° is evil° in the sight° of the LORD°, provoking° Him to anger° with the work° of your hands°.”

Moses encourageth the people.

He encourageth Joshua.

7 ¶ And Mosesº calledºª unto Joshua,º and saidºª unto² him in the sightº of all² Israel,º Be strongºª and of a good courage:ºª for² thou² must goºª with² this² peopleº unto² the landº which² the LORDº hath swornºª unto their fathersº to giveºª them; and thou² shalt cause them to inheritºª it. 8 And the LORD,º he² [it is] that doth goºª beforeº thee; he² will be² with thee,² he will not² failºª thee, neither² forsakeºª thee: fearºª not,² neither² be dismayed.ºª

He delivereth the Law unto the priests to read it in the seventh year to the people.

9 ¶ And Mosesº wroteºª² this² law,º and deliveredºª it unto² the priestsº the sonsº of Levi,º which bareºª² the arkº of the covenantº of the LORD,º and unto² all² the eldersº of Israel.º 10 And Mosesº commandedºª them, saying,ºª At the endº² of [every] sevenº years,º in the solemnityº of the yearº of release,º in the feastº of tabernacles,º 11 When all² Israelº is comeºª to appearºª² beforeº the LORDº thy Godº in the placeº which² he shall choose,ºª thou shalt readºª² this² lawº before² all² Israelº in their hearing.º 12 Gather¹ª the people¹ together,ºª²² men,¹² and women,º and children,º and thy strangerº that² [is] within thy gates,º that² they may hear,ºª and that² they may learn,ºª and fearºª² the LORDº your God,º and observeºª to doºª² all² the wordsº of this² law:º 13 And [that] their children,º which² have not² knownºª [any thing], may hear,ºª and learnºª to fearºª² the LORDº your God,º as long asº²² ye² liveº in² the landº whither²² ye² go overºª² Jordanº to possessºª it.

God giveth a charge to Joshua,

14 ¶ And the LORDº saidºª unto² Moses,º Behold,² thy daysº approachºª that thou must die:ºª callºª² Joshua,º and present¹ª yourselves² in the tabernacleº of the congregation,º that I may give him a charge.ºª And Mosesº and Joshuaº went,¹ª² and presented¹ª themselves² in the tabernacleº of the congregation.º 15 And the LORDº appearedºª in the tabernacleº in a pillarº of a cloud:º and the pillarº of the cloudº stoodºª over² the doorº of the tabernacle.º

24 ¶ And it came to pass,² when Mosesº had made an endºª of writingºª² the wordsº of this² lawº in² a book,º until² they were finished,ºª 25 That Mosesº commandedºª² the Levites,º which bareºª the arkº of the covenantº of the LORD,º saying,ºª 26 Takeºª² this² bookº of the law,º and putºª it in the sideº² of the arkº of the covenantº of the LORDº your God,º that it may be² there² for a witnessº against thee. 27 For² I² knowºª² thy rebellion,º and thy stiffº neck:º behold,² while I am yet² aliveº with² you this day,º ye have been² rebelliousºª against² the LORD;º and how² much more² afterº my death?º

He maketh a protestation to the elders.

28 ¶ Gatherºª unto² me² all² the eldersº of your tribes,º and your officers,ºª that I may speakºª² these² wordsº in their ears,º and callºª² heavenº and earthº to record¹ª against them. 29 For² I knowºª that afterº my deathº ye will utterly¹ª corruptºª [yourselves], and turn asideºª from² the wayº which² I have commandedºª you; and evilº will befallºª you in the latterº days;º because² ye will doºª² evilº in the sightº of the LORD,º to provoke him to angerºª through the workº of your hands.º 30 And Mosesº spakeºª in the earsº of all² the congregationº of Israelº² the wordsº of this² song,º until² they were ended.ºª
