The story of the people's rebellion, and God's mercy.

7 Our fathersº understoodºª not² thy wondersºª in Egypt;º they rememberedºª not²² the multitudeº of thy mercies;º but provokedºª [him] at² the sea,º [even] at the Redº sea.º 8 Nevertheless he savedºª them for his name's¹ sake,²² that he might make² his mighty powerº to be known.ºª 9 He rebukedºª the Redº seaº also, and it was dried up:ºª so he led¹ª² them through the depths,º as through the wilderness.º 10 And he savedºª them from the handº² of him that hatedºª [them], and redeemedºª them from the handº² of the enemy.ºª 11 And the watersº coveredºª their enemies:º there was not² oneº of² them left.ºª 12 Then believedºª they his words;º they sangºª his praise.º 13 They soonºª forgatºª his works;º they waitedºª not² for his counsel:º 14 But lusted¹ª exceedinglyº² in the wilderness,º and temptedºª Godº in the desert.º 15 And he gaveºª them their request;º but sentºª leannessº into their soul.º 16 They enviedºª Mosesº also in the camp,º [and] Aaronº the saintº of the LORD.º 17 The earthº openedºª and swallowed upºª Dathan,º and coveredºª² the companyº of Abiram.º 18 And a fireº was kindledºª in their company;º the flameº burned upºª the wicked.º 19 They madeºª a calfº in Horeb,º and worshippedºª the molten image.º 20 Thus they changedºª² their gloryº into the similitudeº of an oxº that eatethºª grass.º 21 They forgatºª Godº their saviour,ºª which had doneºª great thingsº in Egypt;º 22 Wondrous worksºª in the landº of Ham,º [and] terrible thingsºª by² the Redº sea.º 23 Therefore he saidºª that he would destroyºª them, had notº Mosesº his chosenº stoodºª beforeº him in the breach,º to turn awayºª his wrath,º lest he should destroyºª² [them]. 24 Yea, they despisedºª the pleasantº land,º they believedºª not² his word:º 25 But murmuredºª in their tents,º [and] hearkenedºª not² unto the voiceº of the LORD.º 26 Therefore he lifted upºª his handº against them, to overthrowºª them in the wilderness:º 27 To overthrowºª their seedº also among the nations,º and to scatterºª them in the lands.º 28 They joined¹ª themselves² also unto Baalpeor,º and ateºª the sacrificesº of the dead.ºª 29 Thus they provoked [him] to angerºª with their inventions:º and the plagueº brake inºª upon them. 30 Then stood upºª Phinehas,º and executed judgment:ºª and [so] the plagueº was stayed.ºª 31 And that was countedºª unto him for righteousnessº unto all¹ generationsº for¹ evermore.º² 32 They angeredºª [him] also at² the watersº of strife,ºª¹ so that it went illºª with Mosesº for their sakes:² 33 Because² they provokedºª² his spirit,º so that he spake unadvisedlyºª with his lips.º 34 They did not² destroyºª² the nations,º concerning whom² the LORDº commandedºª them: 35 But were mingledºª among the heathen,º and learnedºª their works.º 36 And they servedºª² their idols:º which were² a snareº unto them. 37 Yea, they sacrificedºª² their sonsº and their daughtersº unto devils,º 38 And shedºª innocentº blood,º [even] the bloodº of their sonsº and of their daughters,º whom² they sacrificedºª unto the idolsº of Canaan:º and the landº was pollutedºª with blood.º 39 Thus were they defiledºª with their own works,º and went a whoringºª with their own inventions.º 40 Therefore was the wrathº of the LORDº kindledºª against his people,º insomuch that he abhorredºª² his own inheritance.º 41 And he gaveºª them into the handº of the heathen;º and they that hatedºª them ruledºª over them. 42 Their enemiesºª also oppressedºª them, and they were brought into subjectionºª under² their hand.º 43 Manyº timesº did he deliverºª them; but they² provokedºª [him] with their counsel,º and were brought lowºª for their iniquity.º 44 Nevertheless he regardedºª their affliction,º when he heardºª² their cry:º 45 And he rememberedºª for them his covenant,º and repentedºª according to the multitudeº of his mercies.º 46 He madeºª them also to be pitiedº ofº all² those that carried them captives.ºª
