1 Thus° the Lord° IGOD° showed° me, and behold°, He was forming° a alocust-swarm° IIwhen the spring° crop° began° to sprout°. And behold°, the spring° crop° [was] after° the king’s° IIImowing°. 2 And it came° about, Iwhen° it had afinished° eating° the vegetation° of the land°, that I said°,
  “bLord° GOD°, please° pardon°!
  IIHow° can Jacob° stand°,
  For he is csmall°?”
  3 The LORD° Iachanged° His mind° about° this°.
  “It shall not be,” said° the LORD°.

4 ¶ Thus° the Lord° GOD° showed° me, and behold°, the Lord° GOD° was calling° to contend° [with them] by afire°, and it consumed° the great° deep° and began to consume° the Ifarm° land°. 5 Then I said°,
  “aLord° GOD°, please° stop°!
  bHow° can Jacob° stand°, for he is small°?”
  6 The LORD° Iachanged° His mind° about° this°.
  “This° too° shall not be,” said° the Lord° GOD°.

7 ¶ Thus° He showed° me, and behold°, the Lord° was standing° Iby a IIvertical° wall° with a plumb° line° in His hand°. 8 The LORD° said° to me, “aWhat° do you see°, Amos°?” And I said°, “A plumb° line°.” Then the Lord° said°,
  “Behold° I am about to put° a bplumb° line°
  In the midst° of My people° Israel°.
  I will Icspare° them no° longer°°.
  9 “The ahigh° places° of Isaac° will be desolated°
  And the bsanctuaries° of Israel° laid° waste°.
  Then I will crise° up against° the house° of Jeroboam° with the sword°.”

Amos Accused, Answers

10 ¶ Then Amaziah°, the apriest° of Bethel°, sent° [word] to bJeroboam° king° of Israel°, saying°, “Amos° has cconspired° against° you in the midst° of the house° of Israel°; the land° is unable°° to endure° all° his words°. 11 For thus° Amos° says°, ‘Jeroboam° will die° by the sword° and Israel° will certainly° go° from its land° into exile°.’” 12 Then Amaziah° said° to Amos°, “aGo°, you seer°, flee° away to the land° of Judah° and there° eat° bread° and there° do your prophesying°! 13 But ano° longer°° prophesy° at Bethel°, for it is a bsanctuary° of the king° and a royal° Iresidence°.”

14 ¶ Then Amos° replied° to Amaziah°, “I am not a prophet°, nor° am I the ason° of a prophet°; for I am a herdsman° and a Igrower° of sycamore° figs°. 15 But the LORD° took° me from Ifollowing° the flock° and the LORD° said° to me, ‘Go° aprophesy° to My people° Israel°.’ 16 Now° hear° the word° of the LORD°: you are saying°, ‘You ashall not prophesy° against° Israel° bnor° shall you Ispeak° against° the house° of Isaac°.’ 17 Therefore°, thus° says° the LORD°, ‘Your awife° will become° a harlot° in the city°, your bsons° and your daughters° will fall° by the sword°, your land° will be parceled° up by a [measuring] line° and you yourself° will die° Iupon cunclean° soil°. Moreover, Israel° will certainly° go° from its land° into exile°.’”

The judgments of the grasshoppers,

4 ¶ Thus² hath the Lordº GODº shewedºª unto me: and, behold,² the Lordº GODº calledºª to contendºª by fire,º and it devouredºª² the greatº deep,º and did eat upºª² a part.º 5 Then saidºª I, O Lordº GOD,º cease,ºª I beseech thee:² by whom² shall Jacobº arise?ºª for² he² [is] small.º 6 The LORDº repentedºª for² this:² This² also² shall not² be,² saithºª the Lordº GOD.º

By the wall of a plumbline is signified the rejection of Israel.

7 ¶ Thus² he shewedºª me: and, behold,² the Lordº stoodºª upon² a wallº [made] by a plumbline,º with a plumblineº in his hand.º 8 And the LORDº saidºª unto² me, Amos,º what² seestºª thou?² And I said,ºª A plumbline.º Then saidºª the Lord,º Behold,² I will setºª a plumblineº in the midstº of my peopleº Israel:º I will not² againºª pass² by¹ª them any more:² 9 And the high placesº of Isaacº shall be desolate,ºª and the sanctuariesº of Israelº shall be laid waste;ºª and I will riseºª against² the houseº of Jeroboamº with the sword.º

Amaziah complaineth of Amos.

10 ¶ Then Amaziahº the priestº of Bethelº sentºª to² Jeroboamº kingº of Israel,º saying,ºª Amosº hath conspiredºª against² thee in the midstº of the houseº of Israel:º the landº is not ableºª² to bearºª² all² his words.º 11 For² thus² Amosº saith,ºª Jeroboamº shall dieºª by the sword,º and Israelº shall surely¹ª be led away captiveºª out of²² their own land.º 12 Also Amaziahº saidºª unto² Amos,º O thou seer,º go,¹ª² flee thee awayºª into² the landº of Judah,º and there² eatºª bread,º and prophesyºª there:² 13 But prophesyºª not² againºª any more² at Bethel:º for² it² [is] the king'sº chapel,º and it² [is] the king'sº court.º

Amos sheweth his calling,

14 ¶ Then answeredºª Amos,º and saidºª to² Amaziah,º I² [was] no² prophet,º neither² [was] I² a prophet'sº son;º but² I² [was] an herdman,º and a gathererºª of sycomore fruit:º 15 And the LORDº tookºª me as I followedº² the flock,º and the LORDº saidºª unto² me, Go,¹ª² prophesyºª unto² my peopleº Israel.º
