1 The Iaoracle° of the word° of the LORD° to bIsrael° through° IIMalachi°.

2 ¶ “I have aloved° you,” says° the LORD°. But you say°, “How° have You loved° us?” “[Was] not Esau° Jacob’s° brother°?” declares° the LORD°. “Yet I bhave loved° Jacob°; 3 but I have hated° Esau°, and I have amade° his mountains° a desolation° and [appointed] his inheritance° for the jackals° of the wilderness°.” 4 Though° Edom° says°, “We have been abeaten° down°, but we will Ibreturn° and build° up the ruins°”; thus° says° the LORD° of hosts°, “They may cbuild°, but I will tear° down°; and [men] will call° them the IIwicked° territory°, and the people° IIItoward whom° the LORD° is indignant° dforever°°.” 5 Your eyes° will see° this and you will say°, “aThe LORD° Ibe magnified° beyond°° the IIborder° of Israel°!”

Sin of the Priests

6 ¶ “ ‘A son° ahonors° [his] father°, and a servant° his master°. Then if° I am a bfather°, where° is My honor°? And if° I am a master°, where° is My Irespect°?’ says° the LORD° of hosts° to you, O cpriests° who despise° My name°. But you say°, ‘How° have we despised° Your name°?’ 7 [You] are presenting° adefiled° Ibfood° upon My altar°. But you say°, ‘How° have we defiled° You?’ In that you say°, ‘The ctable° of the LORD° is to be despised°.’ 8 But when° you present° the ablind° for sacrifice°, is it not evil°? And when° you present° the lame° and sick°, is it not evil°? IWhy not offer° it to your bgovernor°? Would he be pleased° with you? Or° would he receive°° you kindly°?” says° the LORD° of hosts°. 9 “But now° Iwill you not aentreat° God’s° favor°, that He may be gracious° to us? IIWith such° an offering on your part°, will He breceive°° any° of you kindly°?” says° the LORD° of hosts°. 10 “Oh° that there were one among you who would ashut° the Igates°, that you might not uselessly° kindle° [fire on] My altar°! I am not pleased° with you,” says° the LORD° of hosts°, “bnor° will I accept° an offering° from IIyou. 11 For from the arising° of the sun° even° to its setting°, bMy name° [will be] cgreat° among the nations°, and in every° place° dincense° is going to be offered°° to My name°, and a grain offering° [that is] pure°; for My name° [will be] egreat° among the nations°,” says° the LORD° of hosts°. 12 “But you are aprofaning° it, in that you say°, ‘The table° of the Lord° is defiled°, and as for its fruit°, its food° is to be despised°.’ 13 You also say°, ‘IMy, how° atiresome° it is!’ And you disdainfully° sniff° at it,” says° the LORD° of hosts°, “and you bring° what was taken° by brobbery° and [what is] clame° or sick°; so you bring° the offering°! Should I dreceive° that from your hand°?” says° the LORD°. 14 “But cursed° be the aswindler° who has° a male° in his flock° and vows° it, but sacrifices° a bblemished° animal° to the Lord°, for I am a great° cKing°,” says° the LORD° of hosts°, “and My name° is Idfeared° among the IInations°.”

Malachi complaineth of Israel's unkindness.

1 ¶ The burdenº of the wordº of the LORDº to² Israelº byº Malachi.º 2 I have lovedºª you, saith¹ª² the LORD.º Yet ye say,ºª Wherein² hast thou lovedºª us? [Was] not² Esauº Jacob'sº brother?º saith¹ª² the LORD:º yet I lovedºª² Jacob,º 3 And I hatedºª Esau,º and laidºª² his mountainsº and his heritageº wasteº for the dragonsº of the wilderness.º 4 Whereas² Edomº saith,ºª We are impoverished,ºª but we will returnºª and buildºª the desolate places;º thus² saithºª the LORDº of hosts,º They² shall build,ºª but I² will throw down;ºª and they shall callºª them, The borderº of wickedness,º and, The peopleº against whom² the LORDº hath indignationºª for¹ ever.º² 5 And your eyesº shall see,ºª and ye² shall say,ºª The LORDº will be magnifiedºª from²² the borderº of Israel.º

Of their irreligiousness,

6 ¶ A sonº honourethºª [his] father,º and a servantº his master:º if² then I² [be] a father,º where² [is] mine honour?º and if² I² [be] a master,º where² [is] my fear?º saithºª the LORDº of hostsº unto you, O priests,º that despiseºª my name.º And ye say,ºª Wherein² have we despisedºª² thy name?º 7 Ye offerºª pollutedºª breadº upon² mine altar;º and ye say,ºª Wherein² have we pollutedºª thee? In that ye say,ºª The tableº of the LORDº [is] contemptible.ºª 8 And if² ye offerºª the blindº for sacrifice,ºª [is it] not² evil?º and if² ye offerºª the lameº and sick,ºª [is it] not² evil?º offerºª it now² unto thy governor;º will he be pleasedºª with thee, or² acceptºª thy person?º saithºª the LORDº of hosts.º 9 And now,² I pray you,² beseechºª¹ Godº that he will be graciousºª unto us: this² hath been² by your means:º² will he regardºª your² persons?º saithºª the LORDº of hosts.º 10 Who² [is there] even² among you that would shutºª the doorsº [for nought]? neither² do ye kindleºª [fire] on mine altarº for nought.º I have no² pleasureº in you, saithºª the LORDº of hosts,º neither² will I acceptºª an offeringº at your hand.º² 11 For² from the risingº² of the sunº even unto² the going downº of the same my nameº [shall be] greatº among the Gentiles;º and in every² placeº incenseºª [shall be] offeredºª unto my name,º and a pureº offering:º for² my nameº [shall be] greatº among the heathen,º saithºª the LORDº of hosts.º

12 ¶ But ye² have profanedºª it, in that ye say,ºª The tableº of the LORD¹² [is] polluted;ºª and the fruitº thereof, [even] his meat,º [is] contemptible.ºª 13 Ye saidºª also, Behold,² what a wearinessº² [is it]! and ye have snuffed¹ª at² it, saithºª the LORDº of hosts;º and ye broughtºª [that which was] torn,ºª and the lame,º and the sick;ºª thus ye broughtºª² an offering:º should I acceptºª this of your hand?º² saithºª the LORD.º 14 But cursedºª [be] the deceiver,ºª which¹ hath² in his flockº a male,º and voweth,ºª and sacrificethºª unto the Lordº a corrupt thing:ºª for² I² [am] a greatº King,º saithºª the LORDº of hosts,º and my nameº [is] dreadfulºª among the heathen.º
