The Sin and Treachery of Judah

1 “At that time°,” declares° the LORD°, “they will abring° out the bones° of the kings° of Judah° and the bones° of its princes°, and the bones° of the priests° and the bones° of the prophets°, and the bones° of the inhabitants° of Jerusalem° from their graves°. 2 They will spread° them out to the sun°, the moon° and to all° the ahost° of heaven°, which° they have loved° and which° they have served°, and which° they have gone° after° and which° they have sought°, and which° they have worshiped°. They will not be gathered° bor buried°; cthey will be as dung° on the face° of the ground°. 3 And adeath° will be chosen° rather° than° life° by all° the remnant° that remains° of this° evil° family°, that remains° in all° the bplaces° to which° I have driven° them,” declares° the LORD° of hosts°. 4 “You shall say° to them, ‘Thus° says° the LORD°,
  “Do [men] afall° and not get° up again?
  Does one turn° away° and not Irepent°?
  5 “Why° then has this° people°, Jerusalem°,
  aTurned° away° in continual° apostasy°?
  They bhold° fast° to deceit°,
  They crefuse° to return°.
  6 “I ahave listened° and heard°,
  They have spoken° what° is not right°;
  bNo° man° repented° of his wickedness°,
  Saying°, ‘What° have I done°?’
  Everyone° turned° to his course°,
  Like a chorse° charging° into the battle°.
  7 “Even° the stork° in the sky°
  aKnows° her seasons°;
  And the bturtledove° and the swift° and the thrush°
  Observe° the time° of their Imigration°;
  But cMy people° do not know°
  The ordinance° of the LORD°.

  8 ¶ “aHow° can you say°, ‘We are wise°,
  And the law° of the LORD° is with us’?
  But behold°, the lying° pen° of the scribes°
  Has made° [it] into a lie°.
  9 “The wise° men° are aput° to shame°,
  They are dismayed° and caught°;
  Behold°, they have brejected° the word° of the LORD°,
  And what° kind of wisdom° do they have?
  10 “Therefore° I will agive° their wives° to others°,
  Their fields° to Inew° owners°;
  Because° from the least° even to the greatest°
  Everyone° is bgreedy° for gain°;
  From the prophet° even to the priest°
  Everyone° practices° deceit°.
  11 “They aheal° the brokenness° of the daughter° of My people° superficially°,
  Saying°, ‘Peace°, peace°,’
  But there° is no° peace°.
  12 “Were they aashamed° because° of the abomination° they had done°?
  They certainly° were not ashamed°,
  And they did not know° how to blush°;
  Therefore° they shall bfall° among those who fall°;
  At the ctime° of their punishment° they shall be brought° down°,”

  13 ¶ “I will asurely° snatch° them away°,” declares° the LORD°;
  “There° will be bno° grapes° on the vine°
  And cno° figs° on the fig° tree°,
  And the leaf° will wither°;
  And what I have given° them will pass° away°.”’”
  14 Why°° are we sitting° still°?
  aAssemble° yourselves, and let us bgo° into the fortified° cities°
  And let us perish° there°,
  Because° the LORD° our God° has doomed° us
  And given° us cpoisoned° water° to drink°,
  For dwe have sinned° against the LORD°.
  15 [We] awaited° for peace°, but no° good° [came];
  For a time° of healing°, but behold°, terror°!
  16 From aDan° is heard° the snorting° of his horses°;
  At the sound° of the neighing° of his bstallions°
  The whole° land° quakes°;
  For they come° and cdevour° the land° and its fullness°,
  The city° and its inhabitants°.
  17 “For behold°, I am asending° serpents° against you,
  Adders°, for which° there° is bno° charm°,
  And they will bite° you,” declares° the LORD°.

  18IMy asorrow° is beyond healing°,
  My bheart° is faint° [within me]!
  19 Behold°, listen°! The cry° of the daughter° of my people° from a adistant° land°:
  “Is the LORD° not in Zion°? Is her King° not within her?”

  20 “Harvest° is past°, summer° is ended°,
  And we are not saved°.”

He upbraideth their foolish and shameless impenitency.

4 ¶ Moreover thou shalt sayºª unto² them, Thus² saithºª the LORD;º Shall they fall,ºª and not² arise?ºª shall he turn away,ºª and not² return?ºª 5 Why² [then] is this² peopleº of Jerusalemº slidden backºª by a perpetualºª backsliding?º they hold¹ª fast² deceit,º they refuseºª to return.ºª 6 I hearkenedºª and heard,ºª [but] they spake² not² aright:¹ª² no² manº repentedºª him ofº his wickedness,º saying,ºª What² have I done?ºª every one² turnedºª to his course,º as the horseº rushethºª into the battle.º 7 Yea,² the storkº in the heavenº knowethºª her appointed times;º and the turtleº and the craneº and the swallowº observeºª² the timeº of their coming;ºª but my peopleº knowºª not²² the judgmentº of the LORD.º 8 How² do ye say,ºª We² [are] wise,º and the lawº of the LORDº [is] with² us? Lo,² certainlyº in vainº madeºª he [it]; the penº of the scribesºª [is] in vain.º 9 The wiseº [men] are ashamed,¹ª² they are dismayedºª and taken:ºª lo,² they have rejectedºª the wordº of the LORD;º and what² wisdomº [is] in them? 10 Therefore² will I giveºª² their wivesº unto others,º [and] their fieldsº to them that shall inheritºª [them]: for² every one² from the leastº² even unto² the greatestº is given¹ª to covetousness,º² from the prophetº² even unto² the priestº every one² dealethºª falsely.º 11 For they have healedºª² the hurtº of the daughterº of my peopleº slightly,ºª saying,ºª Peace,º peace;º when [there is] no² peace.º 12 Were they ashamed¹ª² when² they had committedºª abomination?º nay,² they were not² at all¹ª ashamed,ºª neither² couldºª they blush:ºª therefore² shall they fallºª among them that fall:ºª in the timeº of their visitationº they shall be cast down,ºª saithºª the LORD.º

He sheweth their grievous judgment,

13 ¶ I will surely¹ª consumeºª them, saithºª the LORD:º [there shall be] no² grapesº on the vine,º nor² figsº on the fig tree,º and the leafº shall fade;ºª and [the things that] I have givenºª them shall pass awayºª from them. 14 Why²² do we² sit² still?¹ª assemble¹ª yourselves,² and let us enterºª into² the defencedº cities,º and let us be silentºª there:² for² the LORDº our Godº hath put us to silence,ºª and given us waterº of gallº to drink,ºª because² we have sinnedºª against the LORD.º 15 We lookedºª for peace,º but no² goodº [came; and] for a timeº of health,º and behold² trouble!º 16 The snortingº of his horsesº was heardºª from Dan:º² the whole² landº trembledºª at the soundº² of the neighingº of his strong ones;º for they are come,ºª and have devouredºª the land,º and allº that is in it; the city,º and those that dwellºª therein. 17 For,² behold,² I will sendºª serpents,º cockatrices,º among you, which² [will] not² [be] charmed,º and they shall biteºª you, saithºª the LORD.º

and bewaileth their desperate estate.

18 ¶ [When] I would comfortº myself against² sorrow,º my heartº [is] faintº in² me. 19 Behold² the voiceº of the cryº of the daughterº of my peopleº because of them that dwell in a farº country:º² [Is] not² the LORDº in Zion?º [is] not² her kingº in her? Why² have they provoked me to angerºª with their graven images,º [and] with strangeº vanities?º 20 The harvestº is past,ºª the summerº is ended,ºª and we² are not² saved.ºª 21 For² the hurtº of the daughterº of my peopleº am I hurt;ºª I am black;ºª astonishmentº hath taken holdºª on me. 22 [Is there] no² balmº in Gilead;º [is there] no² physicianºª there?² why² thenº is not² the healthº of the daughterº of my peopleº recovered?ºª
