God's severe judgment against Judah for divers sins.1 ¶ The wordº of the LORDº which² came² unto² Zephaniahº the sonº of Cushi,º the sonº of Gedaliah,º the sonº of Amariah,º the sonº of Hizkiah,º in the daysº of Josiahº the sonº of Amon,º kingº of Judah.º 2 I will utterly¹ª consumeºª² all² [things] from off²²² the land,º¹ saithºª the LORD.º 3 I will consumeºª manº and beast;º I will consumeºª the fowlsº of the heaven,º and the fishesº of the sea,º and the stumblingblocksº with² the wicked;º and I will cut offºª² manº from offº²² the land,º saithºª the LORD.º 4 I will also stretch outºª mine handº upon² Judah,º and upon² all² the inhabitantsºª of Jerusalem;º and I will cut offºª² the remnantº of Baalº from² this² place,º [and]² the nameº of the Chemarimsº with² the priests;º 5 And them that worshipºª the hostº of heavenº upon² the housetops;º and them that worshipºª [and] that swearºª by the LORD,º and that swearºª by Malcham;¹² 6 And them that are turned backºª fromº² the LORD;º and [those] that² have not² soughtºª² the LORD,º nor² enquiredºª for him. 7 Hold thy peaceºª at the presenceº² of the Lordº GOD:º for² the dayº of the LORDº [is] at hand:º for² the LORDº hath preparedºª a sacrifice,º he hath bidºª his guests.ºª 8 And it shall come to pass² in the dayº of the LORD'Sº sacrifice,º that I will punishºª² the princes,º and the king'sº children,º and all² such as are clothedºª with strangeº apparel.º 9 In the same² dayº also will I punishºª² all² those that leapºª on² the threshold,º which fillºª their masters'º housesº with violenceº and deceit.º 10 And it shall come to pass² in that² day,º saithºª the LORD,º [that there shall be] the noiseº of a cryº from the fishº gate,º² and an howlingº from² the second,º and a greatº crashingº from the hills.º² 11 Howl,ºª ye inhabitantsºª of Maktesh,º for² all² the merchantº peopleº are cut down;ºª all² they that bearº silverº are cut off.ºª 12 And it shall come to pass² at that² time,º [that] I will searchºª² Jerusalemº with candles,º and punishºª² the men¹² that are settledºª on² their lees:º that sayºª in their heart,º The LORDº will not² do good,ºª neither² will he do evil.ºª 13 Therefore their goodsº shall become² a booty,º and their housesº a desolation:º they shall also buildºª houses,º but not² inhabitºª [them]; and they shall plantºª vineyards,º but not² drinkºª² the wineº thereof. 14 The greatº dayº of the LORDº [is] near,º [it is] near,º and hastethº greatly,º [even] the voiceº of the dayº of the LORD:º the mighty manº shall cryºª there² bitterly.º 15 That² dayº [is] a dayº of wrath,º a dayº of troubleº and distress,º a dayº of wastenessº and desolation,º a dayº of darknessº and gloominess,º a dayº of cloudsº and thick darkness,º 16 A dayº of the trumpetº and alarmº against² the fencedºª cities,º and against² the highº towers.º 17 And I will bring distressºª upon men,º that they shall walkºª like blind men,º because² they have sinnedºª against the LORD:º and their bloodº shall be poured outºª as dust,º and their fleshº as the dung.º 18 Neither²² their silverº nor² their goldº shall be ableºª to deliverºª them in the dayº of the LORD'Sº wrath;º but the whole² landº shall be devouredºª by the fireº of his jealousy:º for² he shall makeºª even² a speedyºª riddanceº of² all² them that dwellºª in the land.º [1] 2K 22:1; 2Ch 34:1; Jr 1:2; 25:3; Ezk 1:3; Ho 1:1; 2Ti 3:16; 2P 1:19.
