Warnings and Instructions

  1 A man° who hardens° [his] neck° after amuch reproof°
  Will bsuddenly° be broken° Ibeyond° remedy°.
  2 When the arighteous° Iincrease°, the people° rejoice°,
  But when a wicked° man° rules°, people° groan°.
  3 A man° who aloves° wisdom° makes° his father° glad°,
  But he who bkeeps° company° with harlots° wastes° [his] wealth°.
  4 The aking° gives° stability° to the land° by justice°,
  But a man° who° takes° bribes° overthrows° it.
  5 A man° who aflatters° his neighbor°
  Is spreading° a net° for his steps°.
  6 By transgression° an evil° man° is aensnared°,
  But the righteous° bsings° and rejoices°.
  7 The arighteous° Iis concerned° for the rights° of the poor°,
  The wicked° does not understand° [such] IIconcern°.
  8 Scorners°° aset° a city° aflame°,
  But bwise° men° turn° away° anger°.
  9 When a wise° man° has° a controversy° with a foolish° man°,
  IThe foolish man either rages° or laughs°, and there° is no° rest°.
  10 Men° of abloodshed° hate° the blameless°,
  But the upright° Iare concerned° for his life°.
  11 A afool° Ialways loses° his temper°,
  But a bwise° man° holds° it back°.
  12 If a aruler° pays° attention° to falsehood°,
  All° his ministers° [become] wicked°.
  13 The apoor° man° and the oppressor°° Ihave° this° in common°:
  The LORD° gives° blight° to the eyes° of both°.
  14 If a aking° judges° the poor° with truth°,
  His bthrone° will be established° forever°.
  15 The arod° and reproof° give° wisdom°,
  But a child° Iwho gets° his own way° bbrings° shame° to his mother°.
  16 When the wicked° Iincrease°, transgression° increases°;
  But the arighteous° will see° their fall°.
  17 aCorrect° your son°, and he will give° you comfort°;
  He will also Ibdelight° your soul°.
  18 Where there° is ano° Ivision°, the people° bare unrestrained°,
  But chappy° is he who keeps° the law°.
  19 A slave° will not be instructed° by words° [alone];
  For though he understands°, there° will be no° response°.
  20 Do you see° a man° who is ahasty° in his words°?
  There is bmore° hope° for a fool° than° for him.
  21 He who pampers° his slave° from childhood°
  Will in the end° find him to be a son°.
  22 An aangry° man° stirs° up strife°,
  And a hot-tempered° man° abounds° in transgression°.
  23 A man’s° apride° will bring° him low°,
  But a bhumble° spirit° will obtain° honor°.
  24 He who is a partner° with a thief° hates° his own life°;
  He ahears° the oath° but tells° nothing°.
  25 The afear° of man° Ibrings° a snare°,
  But he who btrusts° in the LORD° will be exalted°.
  26 aMany° seek° the ruler’s° Ifavor°,
  But bjustice° for man° [comes] from the LORD°.
  27 An aunjust° man° is abominable° to the righteous°,

1 ¶ He,º that being often reprovedº hardenethºª [his] neck,º shall suddenlyº be destroyed,ºª and that without² remedy.º 2 When the righteousº are in authority,ºª the peopleº rejoice:ºª but when the wickedº beareth rule,ºª the peopleº mourn.ºª 3 Whosoº lovethºª wisdomº rejoicethºª his father:º but he that keepeth companyºª with harlotsºª spendethºª [his] substance.º 4 The kingº by judgmentº establishethºª the land:º but heº that receiveth giftsº overthrowethºª it. 5 A manº that flatterethºª² his neighbourº spreadethºª a netº for² his feet.º 6 In the transgressionº of an evilº manº [there is] a snare:º but the righteousº doth singºª and rejoice.¹² 7 The righteousº considerethºª the causeº of the poor:º [but] the wickedº regardethºª not² to knowº [it]. 8 Scornfulº men¹² bring¹ª a city¹ into a snare:ºª² but wiseº [men] turn awayºª wrath.º 9 [If] a wiseº manº contendethºª with² a foolishº man,º whether he rageºª or laugh,ºª [there is] no² rest.º 10 The bloodthirstyº¹² hateºª the upright:º but the justº seekºª his soul.º 11 A foolº utterethºª all² his mind:º but a wiseº [man] keepethºª it in till afterwards.º 12 If a rulerºª hearkenºª to² lies,ºº all² his servantsºª [are] wicked.º 13 The poorºª and the deceitfulº manº meet together:ºª the LORDº lightenethºª bothº their eyes.º 14 The kingº that faithfullyº judgethºª the poor,º his throneº shall be establishedºª for ever.º

15 The rodº and reproofº giveºª wisdom:º but a childº leftºª [to himself] bringeth his motherº to shame.ºª 16 When the wickedº are multiplied,ºª transgressionº increaseth:ºª but the righteousº shall seeºª their fall.º 17 Correctºª thy son,º and he shall give thee rest;ºª yea, he shall giveºª delightº unto thy soul.º 18 Where [there is] no² vision,º the peopleº perish:ºª but he that keepethºª the law,º happyº [is] he. 19 A servantº will not² be correctedºª by words:º for though² he understandºª he will not² answer.º 20 Seestºª thou a manº [that is] hastyºª in his words?º [there is] more hopeº of a foolº than of² him. 21 He that delicately bringeth upºª his servantº from a childº² shall have him become² [his] sonº at the length.º

22 An angryº manº stirreth upºª strife,º and a furiousº manº aboundeth² in¹ transgression.º 23 A man'sº prideº shall bring him low:ºª but honourº shall upholdºª the humbleº in spirit.º 24 Whoso is partnerºª with² a thiefº hatethºª his own soul:º he hearethºª cursing,º and bewrayethºª [it] not.² 25 The fearº of manº bringethºª a snare:º but whoso putteth his trustºª in the LORDº shall be safe.ºª 26 Manyº seekºª the ruler'sºª favour;º but [every] man'sº judgmentº [cometh] from the LORD.º² 27 An unjustº manº [is] an abominationº to the just:º and [he that is] uprightº in the wayº [is] abominationº to the wicked.º
