Stephen’s Defense

1 The high° priest° said°, “Are these° things° so°?”

2 ¶ And he said°, “Hear° me, abrethren°° and fathers°! bThe God° of glory° cappeared° to our father° Abraham° when he was in Mesopotamia°, before° he lived° in IHaran°, 3 and said° to him, ‘aLEAVE° YOUR COUNTRY° AND YOUR RELATIVES°, AND COME° INTO THE LAND° THAT I WILL SHOW° YOU.’ 4 aThen° he left° the land° of the Chaldeans° and settled° in IHaran°. bFrom there°, after° his father° died°, [God] had him move° to this° country° in which° you are now° living°. 5 But He gave° him no° inheritance° in it, not even° a foot° of ground°, and [yet], even when he had no° child°, aHe promised° that HE WOULD GIVE° IT TO HIM AS A POSSESSION°, AND TO HIS DESCENDANTS° AFTER° HIM. 6 But aGod° spoke° to this° effect°, that his DESCENDANTS° WOULD BE ALIENS° IN A FOREIGN° LAND°, AND THAT THEY WOULD IBE ENSLAVED° AND MISTREATED° FOR FOUR° HUNDRED° YEARS°. 7 ‘AND WHATEVER°° NATION° TO WHICH° THEY WILL BE IN BONDAGE° I MYSELF° WILL JUDGE°,’ said° God°, ‘AND aAFTER° THAT THEY WILL COME° OUT AND ISERVE° ME IN THIS° PLACE°.’ 8 And He agave° him Ithe covenant° of circumcision°; and so° b[Abraham] became° the father° of Isaac°, and circumcised° him on the eighth° day°; and cIsaac° [became the father of] Jacob°, and dJacob° [of] the twelve° epatriarchs°.

sheweth that Abraham worshipped God rightly, and how God chose the fathers

2 Andº he² said,ºª Men,º brethren,º andº fathers,º hearken;ºª The² Godº of gloryº appearedºª unto ourº fatherº Abraham,º when he wasºª inº Mesopotamia,º beforeºº heº dweltºª inº Charran,º 3 Andº saidºª untoº him,º Get² thee¹ª out ofº thyº country,º andº fromº thyº kindred,º andº comeºª intoº the landº whichºº I shall shewºª thee.º 4 Thenº came² he¹ª out ofº the landº of the Chaldaeans,º and dweltºª inº Charran:º and from thence,º when¹ hisº fatherº was dead,ºª he removedºª himº intoº thisº land,º whereinºº yeº nowº dwell.ºª 5 Andº he gaveºª himº noneº inheritanceº inº it,¹ no,² notº [so much as] to set¹ª his foot¹ on:º² yetº he promisedºª that he would giveºª itº to himº forº a possession,º andº to hisº seedº afterº him,º when [as yet] heº hadºª noº child.º 6 Andº Godº spakeºª on this wise,º Thatº hisº seedº shouldºª sojournº inº a strangeº land;º andº that they should bring¹ª them¹ into bondage,ºª² andº entreat [them] evilºª four hundredº years.º 7 Andº the² nationº to whomº¹ they shall² be in bondageºª will¹ª Iº judge,ºª saidºª God:º andº afterº thatº shall they come forth,ºª andº serveºª meº inº thisº place.º 8 Andº he gaveºª himº the covenantº of circumcision:º andº soº [Abraham] begatºª Isaac,º andº circumcisedºª himº the² eighthº day;º andº Isaacº [begat] Jacob;º andº Jacobº [begat] the² twelveº patriarchs.º 9 Andº the² patriarchs,º moved with envy,ºª soldºª Josephº intoº Egypt:º butº Godº wasºª withº him,º 10 Andº deliveredºª himº out ofº allº hisº afflictions,º andº gaveºª himº favourº andº wisdomº in the sightº of Pharaohº kingº of Egypt;º andº he madeºª himº governorºª overº Egyptº andº allº his¹² house.º 11 Nowº there cameºª a dearthº overº allº the² landº of Egyptº andº Chanaan,º andº greatº affliction:º andº ourº fathersº foundºª noº sustenance.º 12 Butº when Jacobº heardºª that there wasºª cornº inº Egypt,º he sent outºª ourº fathersº first.º 13 Andº atº the² secondº [time] Josephº was made knownºª to his¹² brethren;º andº Joseph'sº kindredº was madeºª knownº unto Pharaoh.º 14 Thenº sentºª Joseph,º and calledºª his¹² fatherº Jacobº to [him], andº allº his¹² kindred,º¹ threescore¹ and fifteenº² souls.º 15 Soº Jacobº went downºª intoº Egypt,º andº died,ºª he,º andº ourº fathers,º 16 Andº were carried overºª intoº Sychem,º andº laidºª inº the² sepulchreº thatº Abrahamº boughtºª for a sumº of moneyº ofº the² sonsº of Emmorº [the father]¹ of Sychem.º 17 Butº whenº the² timeº of the² promiseº drew nigh,ºª whichº Godº had swornºª to Abraham,º the² peopleº grewºª andº multipliedºª inº Egypt,º 18 Tillº¹ anotherº kingº arose,ºª whichº knewºª notº Joseph.º 19 The sameº dealt subtilly¹ª with² ourº kindred,º and evil entreatedºª ourº fathers,º so that¹ª they cast outº² theirº young children,º to the end¹ they might¹ª notº live.ºª
