The age and death of Sarah.

1 ¶ And Sarahº was² an hundredº¹ and sevenº¹ and twentyº yearsº old:º [these were] the yearsº of the lifeº of Sarah.º 2 And Sarahº diedºª in Kirjatharba;º the same² [is] Hebronº in the landº of Canaan:º and Abrahamº cameºª to mournºª for Sarah,º and to weepºª for her.

The purchase of Machpelah,

3 ¶ And Abrahamº stood upºª from beforeº²² his dead,ºª and spakeºª unto² the sonsº of Heth,º saying,ºª 4 I² [am] a strangerº and a sojournerº with² you: giveºª me a possessionº of a buryingplaceº with² you, that I may buryºª my deadºª out of my sight.º² 5 And the childrenº of Hethº answeredºª² Abraham,º sayingºª unto him, 6 Hear² us,¹ª my lord:º thou² [art] a mightyº princeº among² us:¹ in the choiceº of our sepulchresº buryºª² thy dead;ºª noneºº of² us shall withholdºª from² thee² his sepulchre,º but that thou mayest buryºª² thy dead.ºª 7 And Abrahamº stood up,ºª and bowed¹ª himself² to the peopleº of the land,º [even] to the childrenº of Heth.º 8 And he communedºª with² them, saying,ºª If² it beº² your mindº that I should buryºª² my deadºª out of my sight;º² hearºª me, and intreatºª for me to Ephronº the sonº of Zohar,º 9 That he may giveºª me² the caveº of Machpelah,º which² he hath, which² [is] in the endº of his field;º for as much¹ª moneyº as it is worthº he shall give² it¹ª me for a possessionº of a buryingplaceº amongst² you.¹ 10 And Ephronº dweltºª amongº the childrenº of Heth:º and Ephronº the Hittiteº answeredºª² Abrahamº in the audienceº of the childrenº of Heth,º [even] of all² that went inºª at the gateº of his city,º saying,ºª 11 Nay,º my lord,º hear² me:¹ª the fieldº give² I¹ª thee, and the caveº that² [is] therein, I give² it¹ª thee; in the presenceº of the sonsº of my peopleº giveºª I it thee: buryºª thy dead.ºª 12 And Abrahamº bowed down¹ª himself² beforeº the peopleº of the land.º 13 And he spakeºª unto² Ephronº in the audienceº of the peopleº of the land,º saying,ºª But² if² thou² [wilt give it], I pray thee,º hearºª me: I will giveºª thee moneyº for the field;º takeºª [it] of² me, and I will buryºª² my deadºª there.² 14 And Ephronº answeredºª² Abraham,º sayingºª unto him, 15 My lord,º hearkenºª unto me: the landº [is worth] fourº hundredº shekelsº of silver;º what² [is] that² betwixtº me and thee? buryºª therefore thy dead.ºª 16 And Abrahamº hearkenedºª unto² Ephron;º and Abrahamº weighedºª to Ephronº² the silver,º which² he had namedºª in the audienceº of the sonsº of Heth,º fourº hundredº shekelsº of silver,º currentºª [money] with the merchant.ºª

17 ¶ And the fieldº of Ephron,º which² [was] in Machpelah,º which² [was] beforeº Mamre,º the field,º and the caveº which² [was] therein, and all² the treesº that² [were] in the field,º that² [were] in all² the bordersº round about,º were made sureºª 18 Unto Abrahamº for a possessionº in the presenceº of the childrenº of Heth,º before all² that went inºª at the gateº of his city.º

where Sarah was buried.

19 And afterº this,º Abrahamº buriedºª² Sarahº his wifeº in² the caveº of the fieldº of Machpelahº beforeº² Mamre:º the same² [is] Hebronº in the landº of Canaan.º 20 And the field,º and the caveº that² [is] therein, were made sureºª unto Abrahamº for a possessionº of a buryingplaceº by²² the sonsº of Heth.º
