1 aThen all° the tribes° of Israel° came° to David° at Hebron° and Isaid°, “Behold°, we are byour bone° and your flesh°. 2 Previously°°°, when Saul° was king° over° us, ayou were the one who led° Israel° out and in. And the LORD° said° to you, ‘bYou will shepherd° My people° Israel°, and you will be ca ruler° over° Israel°.’” 3 So all° the elders° of Israel° came° to the king° at Hebron°, and King° David° amade° a covenant° with them before° the LORD° at Hebron°; then bthey anointed° David° king° over° Israel°. 4 David° was athirty° years° old° when he became° king°, [and] bhe reigned° forty° years°. 5 At Hebron° ahe reigned° over° Judah° seven° years° and six° months°, and in Jerusalem° he reigned° thirty-three°° years° over° all° Israel° and Judah°.

6aNow the king° and his men° went° to bJerusalem° against° the Jebusites°, the inhabitants° of the land°, and they said° to IDavid°, “You shall not come° in here°, but the blind° and lame° will turn° you away°”; IIthinking°, “David° cannot° enter° here°.” 7 Nevertheless, David° captured° the stronghold° of Zion°, that is athe city° of David°. 8 David° said° on that day°, “Whoever° would strike° the Jebusites°, let him reach° the lame° and the blind°, who are hated° by David’s° soul°, through the water° tunnel°.” Therefore°° they say°, “The blind° or the lame° shall not come° into the house°.” 9 So David° lived° in the stronghold° and called° it athe city° of David°. And David° built° all° around° from the IbMillo° and inward°. 10 aDavid° became° greater° and greater°, for the LORD° God° of hosts° was with him.

War with the Philistines

17 ¶ When the Philistines° heard° that they had anointed° David° king° over° Israel°, aall° the Philistines° went° up to seek° out David°; and when David° heard° [of it], he went° down° to the bstronghold°. 18 Now the Philistines° came° and spread° themselves out in athe valley° of Rephaim°. 19 Then aDavid° inquired° of the LORD°, saying°, “Shall I go° up against° the Philistines°? Will You give° them into my hand°?” And bthe LORD° said° to David°, “Go° up, for I will certainly° give° the Philistines° into your hand°.” 20 So David° came° to aBaal-perazim° and Idefeated° them there°; and he said°, “The LORD° has broken° through° my enemies° before° me like the breakthrough° of waters°.” Therefore°° he named°° that place° IIBaal-perazim°. 21 They abandoned° their idols° there°, so aDavid° and his men° carried° them away.

22 ¶ Now athe Philistines° came° up once°° again° and spread° themselves out in the valley° of Rephaim°. 23 When aDavid° inquired° of the LORD°, He said°, “You shall not go° [directly] up; circle° around° behind° them and come° at them in front° of the Ibalsam° trees°. 24 It shall be, when ayou hear° the sound° of marching° in the tops° of the Ibalsam° trees°, then° you shall act° promptly°, for then° bthe LORD° will have gone° out before° you to strike° the army° of the Philistines°.” 25 Then David° did° so°, just° as the LORD° had commanded° him, and struck° down° the Philistines° from IaGeba° IIas far° as bGezer°.

The Tribes come to Hebron to anoint David over Israel.

4 ¶ Davidº [was] thirtyº yearsº oldº when he began to reign,ºª [and] he reignedºª fortyº years.º 5 In Hebronº he reignedºª over² Judahº sevenº yearsº and sixº months:º and in Jerusalemº he reignedºª thirtyº and threeº yearsº over² all² Israelº and Judah.º

6 ¶ And the kingº and his men¹² went¹ª² to Jerusalemº unto² the Jebusites,º the inhabitantsºª of the land:º which spakeºª unto David,º saying,ºª Except²² thou take awayºª the blindº and the lame,º thou shalt not² come inºª hither:² thinking,ºª Davidº cannot² come inºª hither.² 7 Nevertheless Davidº tookºª² the strong holdº of Zion:º the same² [is] the cityº of David.º 8 And Davidº saidºª on that² day,º Whosoever² getteth upºª to the gutter,º and smitethºª the Jebusites,º and the lameº and the blind,º [that are] hatedºª of David'sº soul,º [he shall be chief and captain]. 11 ¶ And Hiramº kingº of Tyreº sentºª messengersº to² David,º and cedarº trees,º and carpenters,º² and masons:º¹²² and they builtºª Davidº an house.º 12 And Davidº perceivedºª that² the LORDº had establishedºª him kingº over² Israel,º and that² he had exaltedºª his kingdomº for his peopleº Israel'sº sake.²

David directed by God smiteth the Philistines at Baal-perazim,

17 ¶ But when the Philistinesº heardºª that² they had anointedºª² Davidº kingº over² Israel,º all² the Philistinesº came upºª to seekºª² David;º and Davidº heardºª [of it], and went downºª to² the hold.º 18 The Philistinesº also cameºª and spread¹ª themselves² in the valleyº of Rephaim.º 19 And Davidº enquiredºª of the LORD,º saying,ºª Shall I go upºª to² the Philistines?º wilt thou deliverºª them into mine hand?º And the LORDº saidºª unto² David,º Go up:ºª for² I will doubtless¹ª deliverºª² the Philistinesº into thine hand.º 20 And Davidº cameºª to Baalperazim,º and Davidº smoteºª them there,² and said,ºª The LORDº hath broken forth¹ª upon²² mine enemiesºª beforeº me, as the breachº of waters.º Therefore²² he calledºª the nameº of that² placeº Baalperazim.º 21 And there² they leftºª² their images,º and Davidº and his men¹² burnedºª them.

22 ¶ And the Philistinesº came upºª yet² again,ºª and spread¹ª themselves² in the valleyº of Rephaim.º 23 And when Davidº enquiredºª of the LORD,º he said,ºª Thou shalt not² go up;ºª [but] fetch a compassºª² behindº them, and comeºª upon them over againstº² the mulberry trees.º 24 And let it be,² when thou hearestºª² the soundº of a goingº in the topsº of the mulberry trees,º that then² thou shalt bestirºª thyself: for² then² shall the LORDº go outºª beforeº thee, to smiteºª the hostº of the Philistines.º 25 And Davidº did² so,¹ª² as² the LORDº had commandedºª him; and smoteºª² the Philistinesº from Gebaº² until thou comeºª to Gazer.º
