David’s Family Enlarged

1 aNow Hiram° king° of Tyre° sent° messengers° to David° with cedar° trees°, masons°° and carpenters°°, to build° a house° for him. 2 And David° realized° that the LORD° had established° him as king° over° Israel°, [and] that his kingdom° was highly° exalted°, for the sake° of His people° Israel°.

3 ¶ Then David° took° more° wives° at Jerusalem°, and David° Ibecame° the father° of more° sons° and daughters°. 4 aThese° are the names° of the children° Iborn° [to him] in Jerusalem°: Shammua°, Shobab°, Nathan°, Solomon°, 5 Ibhar°, Elishua°, Elpelet°, 6 Nogah°, Nepheg°, Japhia°, 7 Elishama°, Beeliada° and Eliphelet°.

Philistines Defeated

8 ¶ When the Philistines° heard° that David° had been anointed° king° over° all° Israel°, all° the Philistines° went° up in search° of David°; and David° heard° of it and went° out against° them. 9 Now the Philistines° had come° and amade° a raid° in the valley° of Rephaim°. 10 David° inquired° of God°, saying°, “Shall I go° up against° the Philistines°? And will You give° them into my hand°?” Then the LORD° said° to him, “Go° up, for I will give° them into your hand°.” 11 So they came° up to Baal-perazim°, and David° Idefeated° them there°; and David° said°, “God° has broken° through° my enemies° by my hand°, like the breakthrough° of waters°.” Therefore°° they named°° that place° IIBaal-perazim°. 12 They abandoned° their gods° there°; so David° gave° the order° and they were burned° with fire°.

13 ¶ The Philistines° made° ayet° another° raid° in the valley°. 14 David° inquired° again° of God°, and God° said° to him, “You shall not go° up after° them; circle° around° Ibehind°° them and come° at them in front° of the IIbalsam° trees°. 15 It shall be when you hear° the sound° of marching° in the tops° of the balsam° trees°, then° you shall go° out to battle°, for God° will have gone° out before° you to strike° the army° of the Philistines°.” 16 David° did° just° as God° had commanded° him, and they struck° down° the army° of the Philistines° from IGibeon° even as far° as Gezer°. 17 Then the fame° of David° went° out into all° the lands°; and athe LORD° brought° the fear° of him on all° the nations°.

His two victories over the Philistines.

8 ¶ And when the Philistinesº heardº ª that² Davidº was anointedº ª kingº over² all² Israel,º all² the Philistinesº went upº ª to seekº ª ² David.º And Davidº heardº ª [of it], and went outº ª againstº them. 9 And the Philistinesº cameº ª and spreadº ª themselves in the valleyº of Rephaim.º 10 And Davidº enquiredº ª of God,º saying,º ª Shall I go upº ª against² the Philistines?º and wilt thou deliverº ª them into mine hand?º And the LORDº saidº ª unto him, Go up;º ª for I will deliverº ª them into thine hand.º 11 So they came upº ª to Baalperazim;º and Davidº smoteº ª them there.² Then Davidº said,º ª Godº hath broken inº ª ² upon mine enemiesº ª by mine handº like the breaking forthº of waters:º therefore² ² they calledº ª the nameº of that² placeº Baalperazim.º 12 And when they had leftº ª ² their godsº there,² Davidº gave a commandment,º ª and they were burnedº ª with fire.º 13 And the Philistinesº yet² againº ª spread themselves abroadº ª in the valley.º 14 Therefore Davidº enquiredº ª again² of God;º and Godº saidº ª unto him, Go not upº ª ² afterº them; turn awayº ª from² ² them, and comeº ª upon them over againstº ² the mulberry trees.º 15 And it shall be,² when thou shalt hearº ª ² a soundº of goingº in the topsº of the mulberry trees,º [that] then² thou shalt go outº ª to battle:º for² Godº is gone forthº ª beforeº thee to smiteº ª ² the hostº of the Philistines.º 16 Davidº therefore didº ª as² Godº commandedº ª him: and they smoteº ª ² the hostº of the Philistinesº from Gibeonº ² even to² Gazer.º 17 And the fameº of Davidº went outº ª into all² lands;º and the LORDº broughtº ª ² the fearº of him upon² all² nations.º
