Christ Jesus is a priest after the order of Melchisedec,1 ¶ Forº thisº Melchisedec,º kingº of Salem,º priestº of the² most highº God,º who¹ metºª Abrahamº returningºª fromº the² slaughterº of the² kings,º andº blessedºª him;º 2 To whomº alsoº Abrahamº gaveºª a tenth partº ofº all;º firstºº being by interpretationºª Kingº of righteousness,º andº after thatº alsoº Kingº of Salem,º which is,ºª Kingº of peace;º 3 Without father,º without mother,º without descent,º havingºª neitherº beginningº of days,º norº endº of life;º butº made like¹ª unto² the² Sonº of God;º abidethºª a priestº continually.ºº 4 Nowº considerºªª how greatº this manº [was], unto whomº evenº the² patriarchº Abrahamº gaveºª the tenthº ofº the² spoils.º 5 Andº verilyº they² that are ofº the² sonsº of Levi,º who¹ receiveºª the² office of the priesthood,º haveºª a commandmentº to take tithesºª of the² peopleº according² to¹ the² law,º that is,ºª of their¹² brethren,º thoughº they comeºª out ofº the² loinsº of Abraham:º 6 Butº he whose descent is¹ª not¹ countedºª² fromº themº received tithesºª of Abraham,º andº blessedºª him that hadºª the² promises.º 7 Andº withoutº allº contradictionº the² lessº is blessedºª ofº the² better.º 8 Andº hereºº menº that dieºª receiveºª tithes;º butº thereº he [receiveth them], of whom it is witnessedºª thatº he liveth.ºª 9 Andº as¹ I may so say,ººª² Leviº also,º who¹ receivethºª tithes,º payed tithesºª inº Abraham.º 10 Forº he wasºª yetº inº the² loinsº of his father,º whenº Melchisedecº metºª him.º [1] Gn 14:18; 16:14; Ps 57:2; 76:2; 78:35, 56; Is 41:2; Dn 4:2; 5:18, 21; Mi 6:6; Mk 5:7; Ac 16:17; He 6:20.
