In Egypt Jeremiah Warns of Judgment1 But as soon as Jeremiah°, whom° the LORD° their God° had sent°, had afinished° telling° all° the people° all° the words° of the LORD° their God°—that is, all° these° words°— 2 Azariah° the ason° of Hoshaiah°, and Johanan° the son° of Kareah°, and all° the arrogant° men° said° to Jeremiah°, “You are btelling° a lie°! The LORD° our God° has not sent° you to say°, ‘You are not to enter° Egypt° to reside° there°’; 3 but aBaruch° the son° of Neriah° is inciting° you against us to give° us over into the hand° of the Chaldeans°, so they will put° us to death° or exile° us to Babylon°.” 4 So aJohanan° the son° of Kareah° and all° the Icommanders° of the forces°, and all° the people°, bdid not obey° the voice° of the LORD° to cstay° in the land° of Judah°. 5 But Johanan° the son° of Kareah° and all° the Icommanders° of the forces° took° the aentire° remnant° of Judah° who° had returned° from all° the nations° to which° they had been driven° away°, in order to reside° in the land° of Judah°— 6 the men°, the women°, the Ichildren°, the aking’s° daughters° and bevery° person° that Nebuzaradan° the captain° of the bodyguard° had left° with Gedaliah° the son° of Ahikam° IIand grandson° of Shaphan°, together with cJeremiah° the prophet° and Baruch° the son° of Neriah°— 7 and they entered° the land° of Egypt° (for they did not obey° the voice° of the LORD°) and went° in as far° as aTahpanhes°. Jeremiah prophesieth by a type the conquest of Egypt by the Babylonians.8 ¶ Then came² the wordº of the LORDº unto² Jeremiahº in Tahpanhes,º saying,ºª 9 Takeºª greatº stonesº in thine hand,º and hideºª them in the clayº in the brickkiln,º which² [is] at the entryº of Pharaoh'sº houseº in Tahpanhes,º in the sightº of the men¹² of Judah;º 10 And sayºª unto² them, Thus² saithºª the LORDº of hosts,º the Godº of Israel;º Behold,² I will sendºª and takeºª² Nebuchadrezzarº the kingº of Babylon,º my servant,º and will setºª his throneº uponº² these² stonesº that² I have hid;ºª and he shall spreadºª² his royal pavilionº over² them. 11 And when he cometh,ºª he shall smiteºª² the landº of Egypt,º [and deliver] such² [as are] for deathº to death;º and such² [as are] for captivityº to captivity;º and such² [as are] for the swordº to the sword.º 12 And I will kindleºª a fireº in the housesº of the godsº of Egypt;º and he shall burnºª them, and carry them away captives:ºª and he shall array¹ª himself² with² the landº of Egypt,º as² a shepherdºª putteth onºª² his garment;º and he shall go forthºª from thence²² in peace.º 13 He shall breakºª also² the imagesº of Bethshemesh,º that² [is] in the landº of Egypt;º and the housesº of the godsº of the Egyptiansº shall he burnºª with fire.º [8] Ps 139:7; 2Ti 2:9.
