Under the type of breaking a potter's vessel is foreshewed the desolation of the Jews for their sins.

1 ¶ Thus² saithºª the LORD,º Goºª and getºª a potter'sºª earthenº bottle,º and [take] of the ancientsº² of the people,º and of the ancientsº² of the priests;º 2 And go forthºª unto² the valleyº of the sonº of Hinnom,º which² [is] by the entryº of the eastº gate,º and proclaimºª there²² the wordsº that² I shall tellºª² thee, 3 And say,ºª Hearºª ye the wordº of the LORD,º O kingsº of Judah,º and inhabitantsºª of Jerusalem;º Thus² saithºª the LORDº of hosts,º the Godº of Israel;º Behold,² I will bringºª evilº upon² this² place,º the which² whosoever² heareth,ºª his earsº shall tingle.ºª 4 Because²² they have forsakenºª me, and have estrangedºª² this² place,º and have burned incenseºª in it unto otherº gods,º whom² neither² they² nor their fathersº have known,ºª nor the kingsº of Judah,º and have filledºª² this² placeº with the bloodº of innocents;º 5 They have builtºª also² the high placesº of Baal,º to burnºª² their sonsº with fireº [for] burnt offeringsº unto Baal,º which² I commandedºª not,² nor² spakeºª [it], neither² cameºª [it] into² my mind:º 6 Therefore,² behold,² the daysº come,ºª saithºª the LORD,º that this² placeº shall no² more² be calledºª Tophet,º nor The valleyº of the sonº of Hinnom,º but²² The valleyº of slaughter.º 7 And I will make voidºª² the counselº of Judahº and Jerusalemº in this² place;º and I will cause them to fallºª by the swordº beforeº their enemies,ºª and by the handsº of them that seekºª their lives:º and² their carcasesº will I giveºª to be meatº for the fowlsº of the heaven,º and for the beastsº of the earth.º 8 And I will makeºª² this² cityº desolate,º and an hissing;º every one² that passethºª thereby² shall be astonishedºª and hissºª because² of all² the plaguesº thereof. 9 And I will cause them to eatºª² the fleshº of their sonsº and the fleshº of their daughters,º and they shall eatºª every oneº the fleshº of his friendº in the siegeº and straitness,º wherewith² their enemies,ºª and they that seekºª their lives,º shall straitenºª them. 10 Then shalt thou breakºª the bottleº in the sightº of the men¹² that goºª with² thee, 11 And shalt sayºª unto² them, Thus² saithºª the LORDº of hosts;º Even soº will I breakºª² this² peopleº and this² city,º as² [one] breakethºª² a potter'sºª vessel,º that² cannotºª² be made whole² again:¹ª² and they shall buryºª [them] in Tophet,º till [there be] no²² placeº to bury.ºª 12 Thus² will I doºª unto this² place,º saithºª the LORD,º and to the inhabitantsºª thereof, and [even] makeºª² this² cityº as Tophet:º 13 And the housesº of Jerusalem,º and the housesº of the kingsº of Judah,º shall be² defiledº as the placeº of Tophet,º because of all² the housesº upon² whose² roofsº they have burned incenseºª unto all² the hostº of heaven,º and have poured outºª drink offeringsº unto otherº gods.º 14 Then cameºª Jeremiahº from Tophet,º² whither²² the LORDº had sentºª him to prophesy;ºª and he stoodºª in the courtº of the LORD'Sº house;º and saidºª to² all² the people,º 15 Thus² saithºª the LORDº of hosts,º the Godº of Israel;º Behold,² I will bringºª upon² this² cityº and upon² all² her townsº² all² the evilº that² I have pronouncedºª against² it, because² they have hardenedºª² their necks,º that they might not² hearºª² my words.º
