By the obedience of the Rechabites,

1 ¶ The wordº which² came² unto² Jeremiahº from²² the LORDº in the daysº of Jehoiakimº the sonº of Josiahº kingº of Judah,º saying,ºª 2 Goºª unto² the houseº of the Rechabites,º and speak¹ª unto² them, and bringºª them into the houseº of the LORD,º into² oneº of the chambers,º and give them wineº to drink.ºª 3 Then I tookºª² Jaazaniahº the sonº of Jeremiah,º the sonº of Habaziniah,º and his brethren,º and all² his sons,º and the whole² houseº of the Rechabites;º 4 And I broughtºª them into the houseº of the LORD,º into² the chamberº of the sonsº of Hanan,º the sonº of Igdaliah,º a manº of God,º which² [was] byº the chamberº of the princes,º which² [was] aboveº² the chamberº of Maaseiahº the sonº of Shallum,º the keeperºª of the door:º 5 And I setºª beforeº the sonsº of the houseº of the Rechabitesº potsº fullº of wine,º and cups,º and I saidºª unto² them, Drinkºª ye wine.º 6 But they said,ºª We will drinkºª no² wine:º for² Jonadabº the sonº of Rechabº our fatherº commandedºª² us, saying,ºª Ye shall drinkºª no² wine,º [neither ye],² nor your sonsº for¹ ever:º² 7 Neither² shall ye buildºª house,º nor² sowºª seed,º nor² plantºª vineyard,º nor² have² [any]: but² all² your daysº ye shall dwellºª in tents;º that² ye may liveºª manyº daysº inº² the landº where²² ye² [be] strangers.ºª 8 Thus have we obeyedºª the voiceº of Jonadabº the sonº of Rechabº our fatherº in all² that² he hath chargedºª us, to drinkºª no² wineº all² our days,º we,² our wives,º our sons,º nor our daughters;º 9 Nor² to buildºª housesº for us to dwell² in:¹ª neither² have² we vineyard,º nor field,º nor seed:º 10 But we have dwelt² in¹ª tents,º and have obeyed,ºª and doneºª according to all² that² Jonadabº our fatherº commandedºª us. 11 But it came to pass,² when Nebuchadrezzarº kingº of Babylonº came upºª into² the land,º that we said,ºª Come,ºª and let us goºª to Jerusalemº for fearº² of the armyº of the Chaldeans,º and for fearº² of the armyº of the Syrians:º so we dwellºª at Jerusalem.º

Jeremiah condemneth the disobedience of the Jews.

12 ¶ Then came² the wordº of the LORDº unto² Jeremiah,º saying,ºª 13 Thus² saithºª the LORDº of hosts,º the Godº of Israel;º Goºª and tellºª the menº of Judahº and the inhabitantsºª of Jerusalem,º Will ye not² receiveºª instructionº to hearkenºª to² my words?º saithºª the LORD.º 14 ² The wordsº of Jonadabº the sonº of Rechab,º that² he commandedºª² his sonsº not² to drinkºª wine,º are performed;ºª for unto² this² dayº they drinkºª none,² but² obeyºª² their father'sº commandment:º notwithstanding I² have spokenºª unto² you, rising earlyºª and speaking;ºª but ye hearkenedºª not² unto² me. 15 I have sentºª also unto² you² all² my servantsº the prophets,º rising up earlyºª and sendingºª [them], saying,ºª Returnºª ye now² every manº from his evilº way,º² and amendºª your doings,º and go¹ª² not² afterº otherº godsº to serveºª them, and ye shall dwell² in¹ª² the landº which² I have givenºª to you and to your fathers:º but ye have not² inclinedºª² your ear,º nor² hearkenedºª unto² me. 16 Because² the sonsº of Jonadabº the sonº of Rechabº have performedºª² the commandmentº of their father,º which² he commandedºª them; but this² peopleº hath not² hearkenedºª unto² me: 17 Therefore² thus² saithºª the LORDº Godº of hosts,º the Godº of Israel;º Behold,² I will bringºª upon² Judahº and upon² all² the inhabitantsºª of Jerusalemº² all² the evilº that² I have pronouncedºª against² them: because² I have spokenºª unto² them, but they have not² heard;ºª and I have calledºª unto them, but they have not² answered.ºª

God blesseth the Rechabites for their obedience.

18 ¶ And Jeremiahº saidºª unto the houseº of the Rechabites,º Thus² saithºª the LORDº of hosts,º the Godº of Israel;º Because²² ye have obeyedºª² the commandmentº of Jonadabº your father,º and keptºª² all² his precepts,º and doneºª according unto all² that² he hath commandedºª you: 19 Therefore² thus² saithºª the LORDº of hosts,º the Godº of Israel;º Jonadabº the sonº of Rechabº shall not² wantºª a manº to standºª beforeº me for ever.º²
