Jerusalem Captured

1 INow when° Jerusalem° was captured° IIain the ninth° year° of Zedekiah° king° of Judah°, in the tenth° month°, Nebuchadnezzar° king° of Babylon° and all° his army° came° to Jerusalem° and laid° siege° to it; 2 in the eleventh°° year° of Zedekiah°, in the fourth° month°, in the ninth° [day] of the month°, the city° [wall] was abreached°. 3 Then all° the aofficials° of the king° of Babylon° came° in and sat° down° at the bMiddle° Gate°: Nergal-sar-ezer°, Samgar-nebu°, Sar-sekim° the IRab-saris°, Nergal-sar-ezer° [the] IIRab-mag°, and all° the rest° of the officials° of the king° of Babylon°. 4 When° Zedekiah° the king° of Judah° and all° the men° of war° saw° them, they afled° and went° out of the city° at night° by way° of the king’s° garden° through the gate° bbetween° the two walls°; and he went° out toward° the IArabah°. 5 But the army° of the aChaldeans° pursued° them and overtook° Zedekiah° in the bplains° of Jericho°; and they seized° him and brought° him up to Nebuchadnezzar° king° of Babylon° at cRiblah° in the land° of Hamath°, and he passed° sentence° on him. 6 Then the aking° of Babylon° slew° the sons° of Zedekiah° bbefore his eyes° at Riblah°; the king° of Babylon° also slew° all° the cnobles° of Judah°. 7 He then ablinded° Zedekiah’s° eyes° and bound° him in bfetters° of bronze° to bring° him to cBabylon°. 8 The Chaldeans° also aburned° with fire° the king’s° palace° and the houses° of the people°, and they bbroke° down° the walls° of Jerusalem°. 9 As for the rest° of the people° who were left° in the city°, the Iadeserters° who° had gone° over° to him and bthe rest° of the people° who remained°, cNebuzaradan° the dcaptain° of the bodyguard° carried° [them] into exile° in Babylon°. 10 But some° of the apoorest° people° who° had° nothing°°, aNebuzaradan° the captain° of the bodyguard° left° behind° in the land° of Judah°, and gave° them vineyards° and fields° Iat that time°.

Jeremiah Spared

11 ¶ Now Nebuchadnezzar° king° of Babylon° gave° orders° about° aJeremiah° through° Nebuzaradan° the captain° of the bodyguard°, saying°, 12 “Take° him and Ilook°° after° him, and ado° nothing°° harmful° to him, but rather°° deal° with him just° as he tells° you.” 13 So Nebuzaradan° the captain° of the bodyguard° sent° [word], along with Nebushazban° the IRab-saris°, and Nergal-sar-ezer° the IIRab-mag°, and all° the leading° officers° of the king° of Babylon°; 14 they even sent° and atook° Jeremiah° out of the court° of the guardhouse° and entrusted° him to bGedaliah°, the son° of cAhikam°, the son° of Shaphan°, to take° him home°. So he stayed° among° the people°.

15 ¶ Now the word° of the LORD° had come° to Jeremiah° while he was aconfined° in the court° of the guardhouse°, saying°, 16 “Go° and speak° to aEbed-melech° the Ethiopian°, saying°, ‘Thus° says° the LORD° of hosts°, the God° of Israel°, “Behold°, I am about to bring° My words° on this° city° bfor disaster° and not for Iprosperity°; and they will ctake° place° before° you on that day°. 17 But I will adeliver° you on that day°,” declares° the LORD°, “and you will not be given° into the hand° of the men° whom° you dread°. 18 For I will certainly° rescue° you, and you will not fall° by the sword°; but you will have° your [own] alife° as booty°, because° you have btrusted° in Me,” declares° the LORD°.’”

Zedekiah is made blind, and sent to Babylon.

4 ¶ And it came to pass,² [that] when² Zedekiahº the kingº of Judahº sawºª them, and all² the men¹² of war,º then they fled,ºª and went forthºª out of² the cityº by night,º by the wayº of the king'sº garden,º by the gateº betwixt² the two walls:º and he went outºª the wayº of the plain.º 5 But the Chaldeans'º armyº pursuedºª afterº them, and overtookºª² Zedekiahº in the plainsº of Jericho:º and when they had takenºª him, they brought him upºª to² Nebuchadnezzarº kingº of Babylonº to Riblahº in the landº of Hamath,º where he gaveºª judgmentº upon² him. 6 Then the kingº of Babylonº slewºª² the sonsº of Zedekiahº in Riblahº before his eyes:º also the kingº of Babylonº slewºª all² the noblesº of Judah.º 7 Moreover he put outºª Zedekiah's¹² eyes,º and boundºª him with chains,º to carryºª him to Babylon.º

The city ruinated,

8 ¶ And the Chaldeansº burnedºª the king'sº house,º and the housesº of the people,º with fire,º and brake downºª the wallsº of Jerusalem.º

9 Then² Nebuzaradanº the captainº of the guardº carried away captiveºª into Babylonº the remnantº of the peopleº that remainedºª in the city,º and those that fell away,ºª that² fellºª to² him, with² the restº of the peopleº that remained.ºª 10 But Nebuzaradanº the captainº of the guardº leftºª of the poorº of² the people,º which² had nothing,º² in the landº of Judah,º and gaveºª them vineyardsº and fieldsº at the same² time.º

Nebuchadrezzar's charge for the good usage of Jeremiah.

11 ¶ Now Nebuchadrezzarº kingº of Babylonº gave chargeºª concerning² Jeremiahº toº Nebuzaradanº the captainº of the guard,º saying,ºª 12 Takeºª him, and look wellººª to² him, and doºª him no²² harm;º¹ but²² doºª unto² him even² as² he shall sayºª unto² thee. 13 So Nebuzaradanº the captainº of the guardº sent,ºª and Nebushasban,º Rabsaris,º and Nergalsharezer,º Rabmag,º and all² the kingº of Babylon'sº princes;º 14 Even they sent,ºª and tookºª² Jeremiahº out of the courtº² of the prison,º and committedºª him unto² Gedaliahº the sonº of Ahikamº the sonº of Shaphan,º that he should carryºª him home:º so he dweltºª amongº the people.º

God's promise to Ebed-melech.

15 ¶ Now the wordº of the LORDº came² unto² Jeremiah,º while he was² shut upºª in the courtº of the prison,º saying,ºª 16 Goºª and speakºª to Ebedmelechº the Ethiopian,º saying,ºª Thus² saithºª the LORDº of hosts,º the Godº of Israel;º Behold,² I will bringºª² my wordsº upon² this² cityº for evil,º and not² for good;º and they shall be² [accomplished] in that² dayº beforeº thee. 17 But I will deliverºª thee in that² day,º saithºª the LORD:º and thou shalt not² be givenºª into the handº of the men¹² of whom¹² thou² [art] afraid.ºª²² 18 For² I will surely¹ª deliverºª thee, and thou shalt not² fallºª by the sword,º but thy lifeº shall be² for a preyº unto thee: because² thou hast put thy trustºª in me, saithºª the LORD.º
