Moses is born,

1 ¶ And there went¹ª² a manº of the houseº² of Levi,º and tookºª [to wife] a² daughterº of Levi.º 2 And the womanº conceived,ºª and bareºª a son:º and when she sawºª him that² he² [was a] goodlyº [child], she hidºª him threeº months.º

and in an ark cast into the flags.

3 And when she couldºª not² longerº hideºª him, she tookºª for him an arkº of bulrushes,º and daubedºª it with slimeº and with pitch,º and putºª² the childº therein; and she laidºª [it] in the flagsº by² the river'sº brink.º 4 And his sisterº stoodºª afar off,º² to witºª what² would be doneºª to him.

He is found, and brought up by Pharaoh's daughter.

5 ¶ And the daughterº of Pharaohº came downºª to washºª [herself] at² the river;º and her maidensº walked¹ª along² by² the river'sº side;º and when she sawºª² the arkº amongº the flags,º she sentºª² her maidº to fetchºª it. 6 And when she had openedºª [it], she sawºª² the child:º and, behold,² the babeº wept.ºª And she had compassionºª on² him, and said,ºª This² [is one] of the Hebrews'¹ children.º²² 7 Then saidºª his sisterº to² Pharaoh'sº daughter,º Shall I go¹ª² and callºª to thee a nurseºª² of² the Hebrew¹ women,¹² that she may nurseºª² the childº for thee? 8 And Pharaoh'sº daughterº saidºª to her, Go.¹ª² And the maidº went¹ª² and calledºª the child'sº² mother.º 9 And Pharaoh'sº daughterº saidºª unto her, Take¹ª this child¹ away,¹ª²²²² and nurseºª it for me, and I² will giveºª [thee]² thy wages.º And the womanº tookºª the child,º and nursedºª it. 10 And the childº grew,ºª and she broughtºª him unto Pharaoh'sº daughter,º and he became² her son.º And she calledºª his nameº Moses:º and she said,ºª Because² I drewºª him out of² the water.º

He slayeth an Egyptian. He reproveth an Hebrew.

11 ¶ And it came to pass² in those² days,º when Mosesº was grown,ºª that he went outºª unto² his brethren,º and lookedºª on their burdens:º and he spiedºª an Egyptianºº smitingºª an Hebrew,º² one of his brethren.º² 12 And he lookedºª this wayº and that way,º and when he sawºª that² [there was] no² man,º he slewºª² the Egyptian,º and hidºª him in the sand.º 13 And when he went outºª the secondº day,º behold,² twoº men¹² of the Hebrewsº strove¹ª together:² and he saidºª to him that did the wrong,º Wherefore² smitestºª thou thy fellow?º 14 And he said,ºª Who² madeºª thee¹ a princeº and a judgeºª over² us? intendestºª thou² to killºª me, as² thou killedstºª² the Egyptian?º And Mosesº feared,ºª and said,ºª Surelyº this thingº is known.ºª

He fleeth into Midian.

15 Now when Pharaohº heardºª this²² thing,º he soughtºª to slayºª² Moses.º But Mosesº fledºª from the faceº² of Pharaoh,º and dweltºª in the landº of Midian:º and he sat downºª by² a well.º 16 Now the priestº of Midianº had sevenº daughters:º and they cameºª and drewºª [water], and filledºª² the troughsº to waterºª their father'sº flock.º 17 And the shepherdsºª cameºª and drove them away:ºª but Mosesº stood upºª and helpedºª them, and wateredºª² their flock.º 18 And when they cameºª to² Reuelº their father,º he said,ºª Howº [is it that] ye are comeºª so soonºª to day?º 19 And they said,ºª An Egyptianºº deliveredºª us out of the handº² of the shepherds,ºª and also² drew¹ª [water] enoughºª for us, and wateredºª² the flock.º 20 And he saidºª unto² his daughters,º And where² [is] he? why² [is] it² [that] ye have leftºª² the man?º callºª him, that he may eatºª bread.º

He marrieth Zipporah.

21 And Mosesº was contentºª to dwellºª with² the man:º and he gaveºª Mosesº² Zipporahº his daughter.º

Gershom is born.

22 And she bareºª [him] a son,º and he calledºª² his nameº Gershom:¹² for² he said,ºª I have been² a strangerº in a strangeº land.º

God respecteth the Israelites' cry.

23 ¶ And it came to pass² in process¹¹ of time,º²² that the kingº of Egyptº died:ºª and the childrenº of Israelº sighedºª by reason ofº the bondage,º and they cried,ºª and their cryº came upºª unto² Godº by reason of² the bondage.º 24 And Godº heardºª² their groaning,º and Godº rememberedºª² his covenantº with² Abraham,º with² Isaac,º and with² Jacob.º 25 And Godº looked¹ª upon²² the childrenº of Israel,º and Godº had respectºª unto [them].
