1 Then the LORD° spoke° to Moses°, “Depart°, go° up from here°, you and the people° whom° you have brought° up from the land° of Egypt°, to the land° of which° aI swore° to Abraham°, bIsaac°, and cJacob°, saying°, ‘dTo your Idescendants° I will give° it.’ 2 I will send° aan angel° before° you and bI will drive° out the Canaanite°, the Amorite°, the Hittite°, the Perizzite°, the Hivite° and the Jebusite°. 3 [Go up] to a land° aflowing° with milk° and honey°; for I will not go° up in your midst°, because° you are Iban obstinate°° people°, and cI might° destroy° you on the way°.”

4 ¶ When the people° heard° this° Isad° word°, athey went° into mourning°, and none°° of them put° on his ornaments°. 5 For the LORD° had said° to Moses°, “Say° to the sons° of Israel°, ‘You are Iaan obstinate°° people°; should I go° up in your midst° for one° moment°, I would destroy° you. Now° therefore, put° off° your ornaments° from you, that I may know° what° I shall do° with you.’” 6 So the sons° of Israel° stripped° themselves of their ornaments°, from Mount° Horeb° [onward].

7 ¶ Now Moses° used to take° athe tent° and pitch° it outside°° the camp°, a good° distance° from the camp°, and he called° it the tent° of meeting°. And beveryone° who sought° the LORD° would go° out to the tent° of meeting° which° was outside°° the camp°. 8 And it came° about, whenever Moses° went° out to the tent°, that all° the people° would arise° and stand°, each° at the entrance° of his tent°, and gaze° after° Moses° until° he entered° the tent°. 9 Whenever Moses° entered° the tent°, athe pillar° of cloud° would descend° and stand° at the entrance° of the tent°; band Ithe LORD would speak° with Moses°. 10 When all° the people° saw° the pillar° of cloud° standing° at the entrance° of the tent°, all° the people° would arise° and worship°, each° at the entrance° of his tent°. 11 Thus athe LORD° used to speak° to Moses° face° to face°, just° as a man° speaks° to his friend°. When IMoses returned° to the camp°, bhis servant° Joshua°, the son° of Nun°, a young° man°, would not depart° from the tent°.

Moses Intercedes

12 ¶ Then Moses° said° to the LORD°, “See°, You say° to me, ‘aBring° up this° people°!’ But You Yourself° have not let me know° bwhom° You will send° with me. cMoreover, You have said°, ‘I have known° you by name°, and you have also° found° favor° in My sight°.’ 13 Now° therefore, I pray° You, if° I have found° favor° in Your sight°, alet me know° Your ways° that I may know° You, so° that I may find° favor° in Your sight°. bConsider° too, that this° nation° is Your people°.” 14 And He said°, “aMy presence° shall go° [with you], and bI will give° you rest°.” 15 Then he said° to Him, “aIf° Your presence° does not go° [with us], do not lead° us up from here°. 16 For how° then° can it be known° that I have found° favor° in Your sight°, I and Your people°? Is it not by Your going° with us, so that awe, I and Your people°, may be distinguished° from all° the [other] people° who° are upon the face° of the Iearth°?”

17 ¶ The LORD° said° to Moses°, “I will also° do° this° thing° of which° you have spoken°; afor you have found° favor° in My sight° and I have known° you by name°.” 18 aThen IMoses said°, “I pray° You, show° me Your glory°!” 19 And He said°, “aI Myself° will make all° My goodness° pass° before°° you, and will proclaim° the name° of the LORD° before° you; and bI will be gracious° to whom° I will be gracious°, and will show° compassion° on whom° I will show° compassion°.” 20 But He said°, “You cannot°° see° My face°, afor no° man° can see° Me and live°!” 21 Then the LORD° said°, “Behold°, there is a place° Iby Me, and ayou shall stand° [there] on the rock°; 22 and it will come° about, while My glory° is passing° by, that I will put° you in the cleft° of the rock° and acover° you with My hand° until° I have passed° by. 23 Then I will take° My hand° away° and you shall see° My back°, but aMy face° shall not be seen°.”

4 ¶ And when the peopleº heardºª² these² evilº tidings,º they mourned:ºª and no² manº did putºª on² him his ornaments.º 5 For the LORDº had saidºª unto² Moses,º Sayºª unto² the childrenº of Israel,º Ye² [are] a stiffneckedºº people:º I will come upºª into the midstº of thee in aº moment,º and consumeºª thee: therefore now² put offºª thy ornamentsº from²² thee, that I may knowºª what² to doºª unto thee. 6 And the childrenº of Israelº stripped¹ª themselves² of² their ornamentsº by the mountº² Horeb.º

7 And Mosesº tookºª² the tabernacle,º and pitchedºª it withoutº² the camp,º afar offºª from² the camp,º and calledºª it the Tabernacleº of the congregation.º And it came to pass,² [that] every one² which soughtºª the LORDº went outºª unto² the tabernacleº of the congregation,º which² [was] withoutº² the camp.º 8 And it came to pass,² when Mosesº went outºª unto² the tabernacle,º [that] all² the peopleº rose up,ºª and stoodºª every manº [at] his tentº door,º and lookedºª afterº Moses,º until² he was goneºª into the tabernacle.º

The LORD talketh familiarly with Moses.

9 And it came to pass,² as Mosesº entered¹ª into² the tabernacle,º the cloudyº pillarº descended,ºª and stoodºª [at] the doorº of the tabernacle,º and [the LORD] talkedºª with² Moses.º 10 And all² the peopleº sawºª² the cloudyº pillarº standºª [at] the tabernacleº door:º and all² the peopleº rose upºª and worshipped,ºª every manº [in] his tentº door.º 11 And the LORDº spakeºª unto² Mosesº faceº to² face,º as² a manº speakethºª unto² his friend.º And he turned againºª into² the camp:º but his servantºª Joshua,º the sonº of Nun,º a young man,º departedºª not² out¹ of²² the tabernacle.º

Moses desireth to see the glory of God.

12 ¶ And Mosesº saidºª unto² the LORD,º See,ºª thou² sayestºª unto² me, Bring upºª² this² people:º and thou² hast not² let me knowºª² whom² thou wilt sendºª with² me. Yet thou² hast said,ºª I knowºª thee by name,º and thou hast also² foundºª graceº in my sight.º 13 Now² therefore, I pray thee,² if² I have foundºª graceº in thy sight,º shewºª me now²² thy way,º that² I may knowºª thee, that I may findºª graceº in thy sight:º and considerºª that² this² nationº [is] thy people.º 14 And he said,ºª My presenceº shall go¹ª² [with thee], and I will give thee rest.ºª 15 And he saidºª unto² him, If² thy presenceº goºª not² [with me], carry us not upºª² hence.²² 16 For wherein² shall it be knownºª hereº that² I² and thy peopleº have foundºª graceº in thy sight?º [is it] not² in that thou goest¹ª² with² us? so shall we be separated,ºª I² and thy people,º from all²² the peopleº that² [are] upon² the faceº of the earth.º 17 And the LORDº saidºª unto² Moses,º I will doºª² this² thingº also² that² thou hast spoken:ºª for² thou hast foundºª graceº in my sight,º and I knowºª thee by name.º 18 And he said,ºª I beseech thee,º shewºª me² thy glory.º 19 And he said,ºª I² will make all² my goodnessº passºª before²² thee, and I will proclaimºª the nameº of the LORDº beforeº thee; and will be graciousºª² to whom² I will be gracious,ºª and will shew mercyºª² on whom² I will shew mercy.ºª 20 And he said,ºª Thou canstºª not² seeºª² my face:º for² there shall no² manº seeºª me, and live.ºª 21 And the LORDº said,ºª Behold,² [there is] a placeº by² me, and thou shalt standºª upon² a rock:º 22 And it shall come to pass,² while my gloryº passeth by,ºª that I will putºª thee in a cliftº of the rock,º and will coverºª² thee with my handº whileº I pass by:ºª 23 And I will take¹ª away²² mine hand,º and thou shalt seeºª² my back parts:º but my faceº shall not² be seen.ºª
