The Coming Day of the Lord

3 aKnow° this° first° of all, that bin the last° days° cmockers° will come° with [their] mocking°, dfollowing° after° their own° lusts°, 4 and saying°, “aWhere° is the promise° of His bcoming°? For [ever] since°° the fathers° cfell° asleep°, all° continues° just° as it was dfrom the beginning° of creation°.” 5 For Iwhen they maintain° this°, it escapes° their notice° that aby the word° of God° [the] heavens° existed° long° ago° and [the] earth° was bformed° out of water° and by water°, 6 through° which° athe world° at that time° was bdestroyed°, being flooded° with water°. 7 But by His word° athe present° heavens° and earth° are being reserved° for bfire°, kept° for cthe day° of judgment° and destruction° of ungodly° men°.

A New Heaven and Earth

10 But athe day° of the Lord° bwill come° like° a thief°, in which° cthe heavens° dwill pass° away° with a roar° and the eelements° will be destroyed° with intense° heat°, and fthe earth° and Iits works° will be IIburned° up.

He assureth them of the certainty of Christ's coming to judgment, against those scorners who dispute against it:

1 ¶ Thisº secondº epistle,º beloved,º I¹ª nowº writeºª unto you;º inº [both] whichº I stir upºª yourº pureº mindsº by way¹ of² remembrance:º 2 That ye may be mindfulºª of the² wordsº which were spoken beforeºª byº the² holyº prophets,º andº of the² commandmentº of usº the² apostlesº of the² Lordº andº Saviour:º 3 Knowingºª thisº first,º thatº there shall comeºª inº the lastº daysº scoffers,º walkingºª afterº their¹² ownº lusts,º 4 Andº saying,ºª Whereº isºª the² promiseº of hisº coming?º forº sinceºº the² fathersº fell asleep,ºª all thingsº continueº¹ª as² [they were] fromº the beginningº of the creation.º 5 Forº thisº theyº willinglyºª are ignorant of,ºª thatº by the² wordº of Godº the heavensº wereºª of old,º andº the earthº standing² out¹ª ofº the waterº andº inº the water:º 6 Wherebyºº the² worldº that then² was,¹ being overflowedºª with water,º perished:ºª 7 Butº the² heavensº andº the² earth,º which are now,º by the² sameº wordº areºª kept in store,ºª reservedºª unto fireº againstº the dayº of judgmentº andº perditionº of ungodlyº men.º

warning the godly, for the long patience of God, to hasten their repentance.

8 But,º beloved,º be¹ª not¹¹ ignorantºª² of this² one¹ thing,¹² thatº oneº dayº [is] withº the Lordº asº a thousandº years,º andº a thousandº yearsº asº oneº day.º 9 The² Lordº is¹ª not¹ slackºª² concerning his promise,º asº some menº countºª slackness;º butº is longsufferingºª toº us-ward,º notº willingºª that anyº should perish,ºª butº that allº should comeºª toº repentance.º

exhorting them, from the expectation thereof, to all holiness of life:

11 [Seeing] thenº [that] allº these thingsº shall be dissolved,ºª what mannerº [of persons] oughtºª yeº to beºª inº [all] holyº conversationº andº godliness,º 12 Looking forºª andº hastingºª unto the² comingº of the² dayº of God,º whereinºº the heavensº being on fireºª shall be dissolved,ºª andº the elementsº shall melt¹ª² with fervent heat?¹ª² 13 Neverthelessº we,¹ª according² to¹ hisº promise,º look forºª newº heavensº andº a newº earth,º whereinºº dwellethºª righteousness.º 14 Wherefore,º beloved,º seeing that ye look forºª such things,º be diligentºª that ye may be foundºª of himº inº peace,º without spot,º andº blameless.º

and again, to think the patience of God to tend to their salvation, as Paul wrote to them in his epistles.

15 Andº accountºª [that] the² longsufferingº of ourº Lordº [is] salvation;º even as¹² ourº belovedº brotherº Paulº alsoº according² to¹ the² wisdomº givenºª unto himº hath writtenºª unto you;º 16 Asº alsoº inº allº [his] epistles,º speakingºª inº themº ofº these things;º inº whichº areºª some thingsº hard to be understood,º whichº they that are unlearnedº andº unstableº wrest,ºª asº [they do] alsoº the² otherº scriptures,º untoº their¹² ownº destruction.º 17 Yeº therefore,º beloved,º seeing ye know [these things] before,ºª bewareºª lestº ye also,¹ª being led away¹ª with² the² errorº of the² wicked,º fall fromºª your ownº stedfastness.º 18 Butº growºª inº grace,º andº [in] the knowledgeº of ourº Lordº andº Saviourº Jesusº Christ.º To himº [be] gloryº bothº nowº andº for¹ ever.ºº² Amen.º
