Amaziah his good reign.

1 ¶ In the secondº yearº of Joashº sonº of Jehoahaz¹² kingº of Israelº reignedºª Amaziahº the sonº of Joashº kingº of Judah.º 2 He was² twentyº and fiveº yearsº oldº when he began to reign,ºª and reignedºª twentyº and nineº yearsº in Jerusalem.º And his mother'sº nameº [was] Jehoaddanº of² Jerusalem.º 3 And he didºª [that which was] rightº in the sightº of the LORD,º yetº not² like Davidº his father:º he didºª according to all things² as² Joashº his fatherº did.ºª 4 Howbeit² the high placesº were not² taken away:ºª as yetº the peopleº did sacrificeºª and burnt incenseºª on the high places.º

His justice on the murderers of his father.

5 ¶ And it came to pass,² as soon as² the kingdomº was confirmedºª in his hand,º that he slewºª² his servantsº which had slainºª² the kingº his father.º 6 But the childrenº of the murderersºª he slewºª not:² according unto that which is writtenºª in the bookº of the lawº of Moses,º wherein² the LORDº commanded,ºª saying,ºª The fathersº shall not² be put to deathºª for² the children,º nor² the childrenº be put to deathºª for² the fathers;º but²² every manº shall be put to deathºª for his own sin.º

His victory over Edom.

7 He² slewºª² of² Edomº in the valleyº of saltº tenº thousand,º and tookºª² Selahº by war,º and calledºª² the nameº of it Joktheelº unto² this² day.º

Amaziah, provoking Jehoash, is overcome and spoiled.

8 ¶ Then² Amaziahº sentºª messengersº to² Jehoash,º the sonº of Jehoahazº sonº of Jehu,º kingº of Israel,º saying,ºª Come,¹ª² let us look¹ª one another² in the face.º 9 And Jehoashº the kingº of Israelº sentºª to² Amaziahº kingº of Judah,º saying,ºª The thistleº that² [was] in Lebanonº sentºª to² the cedarº that² [was] in Lebanon,º saying,ºª Giveºª² thy daughterº to my sonº to wife:º and there passed¹ª by² a wildº beastº that² [was] in Lebanon,º and trode downºª² the thistle.º 10 Thou hast indeed¹ª smittenºª² Edom,º and thine heartº hath lifted thee up:ºª gloryºª [of this], and tarryºª at home:º for why² shouldest thou meddleºª to [thy] hurt,º that thou shouldest fall,ºª [even] thou,² and Judahº with² thee? 11 But Amaziahº would not² hear.ºª Therefore Jehoashº kingº of Israelº went up;ºª and he² and Amaziahº kingº of Judahº looked¹ª one another² in the faceº at Bethshemesh,º which² [belongeth] to Judah.º 12 And Judahº was put to the worseºª beforeº Israel;º and they fledºª every manº to their tents.º 13 And Jehoashº kingº of Israelº tookºª Amaziahº kingº of Judah,º the sonº of Jehoashº the sonº of Ahaziah,º at Bethshemesh,º and cameºª to Jerusalem,º and brake downºª the wallº of Jerusalemº from the gateº of Ephraimº unto² the cornerº gate,º fourº hundredº cubits.º 14 And he tookºª² all² the goldº and silver,º and all² the vesselsº that were foundºª in the houseº of the LORD,º and in the treasuresº of the king'sº house,º and hostages,ºº and returnedºª to Samaria.º

15 ¶ Now the restº of the actsº of Jehoashº which² he did,ºª and his might,º and how² he foughtºª with² Amaziahº kingº of Judah,º [are] they² not² writtenºª in² the bookº of the chroniclesºº of the kingsº of Israel?º

Jeroboam succeedeth Jehoash.

16 And Jehoashº sleptºª with² his fathers,º and was buriedºª in Samariaº with² the kingsº of Israel;º and Jeroboamº his sonº reignedºª in his stead.²

Amaziah slain by a conspiracy.

17 ¶ And Amaziahº the sonº of Joashº kingº of Judahº livedºª afterº the deathº of Jehoashº sonº of Jehoahazº kingº of Israelº fifteenºº years.º 18 And the restº of the actsº of Amaziah,º [are] they² not² writtenºª in² the bookº of the chroniclesºº of the kingsº of Judah?º 19 Now they madeºª a conspiracyº against² him in Jerusalem:º and he fledºª to Lachish;º but they sentºª afterº him to Lachish,º and slewºª him there.² 20 And they broughtºª him on² horses:º and he was buriedºª at Jerusalemº with² his fathersº in the cityº of David.º

Azariah succeedeth him.

21 ¶ And all² the peopleº of Judahº tookºª² Azariah,º which² [was] sixteenºº yearsº old,º and made him kingºª² instead of² his fatherº Amaziah.º 22 He² builtºª² Elath,º and restoredºª it to Judah,º after¹ that² the kingº sleptºª with² his fathers.º

Jeroboam's wicked reign.

23 ¶ In the fifteenthºº¹ yearº of Amaziahº the sonº of Joashº kingº of Judahº Jeroboamº the sonº of Joashº kingº of Israelº began to reignºª in Samaria,º [and reigned] fortyº and oneº years.º 24 And he didºª [that which was] evilº in the sightº of the LORD:º he departedºª not² from all²² the sinsº of Jeroboamº the sonº of Nebat,º who² made² Israelº to sin.ºª 25 He² restoredºª² the coastº of Israelº from the enteringºª² of Hamathº unto² the seaº of the plain,º according to the wordº of the LORDº Godº of Israel,º which² he spakeºª by the handº of his servantº Jonah,º the sonº of Amittai,º the prophet,º which² [was] of Gathhepher.º² 26 For² the LORDº sawºª² the afflictionº of Israel,º [that it was] veryº bitter:ºª for [there was] not¹ any² shut up,ºª nor any² left,ºª nor² any helperºª for Israel.º 27 And the LORDº saidºª not² that he would blot outºª² the nameº of Israelº from under²² heaven:º but he savedºª them by the handº of Jeroboamº the sonº of Joash.º

28 ¶ Now the restº of the actsº of Jeroboam,º and all² that² he did,ºª and his might,º how² he warred,ºª and how² he recoveredºª² Damascus,º and Hamath,º [which belonged] to Judah,º for Israel,º are they² not² writtenºª in² the bookº of the chroniclesºº of the kingsº of Israel?º

Zachariah succeedeth him.

29 And Jeroboamº sleptºª with² his fathers,º [even] with² the kingsº of Israel;º and Zachariahº his sonº reignedºª in his stead.²
