Ahaz Reigns over Judah

1 In the seventeenth°° year° of Pekah° the son° of Remaliah°, aAhaz° the son° of Jotham°, king° of Judah°, became° king°. 2 aAhaz° [was] twenty° years° old° when he became° king°, and he reigned° sixteen°° years° in Jerusalem°; and he did not do° what° was right° in the sight° of the LORD° his God°, as his father° David° [had done]. 3 But he walked° in the way° of the kings° of Israel°, aand even° made his son° pass° through the fire°, baccording to the abominations° of the nations° whom° the LORD° had Idriven° out from before° the sons° of Israel°. 4 He asacrificed° and burned° incense° on the high° places° and on the hills° and under° every° green° tree°.

5 ¶ Then° aRezin° king° of Aram° and Pekah° son° of Remaliah°, king° of Israel°, came° up to Jerusalem° to [wage] war°; and they besieged°° Ahaz°, bbut could° not Iovercome° him. 6 At that time° Rezin° king° of Aram° recovered° aElath° for Aram°, and cleared° the Judeans° out of IElath° entirely; and the IIArameans° came° to Elath° and have lived° there° to this° day°.

Ahaz Seeks Help of Aram

7aSo Ahaz° sent° messengers° to bTiglath-pileser° king° of Assyria°, saying°, “I am your servant° and your son°; come° up and deliver° me from the Ihand° of the king° of Aram° and from the Ihand° of the king° of Israel°, who are rising° up against° me.” 8 aAhaz° took° the silver° and gold° that was found° in the house° of the LORD° and in the treasuries° of the king’s° house°, and sent° a present° to the king° of Assyria°. 9 aSo the king° of Assyria° listened° to him; and the king° of Assyria° went° up against° Damascus° and bcaptured° it, and carried° [the people of] it away° into exile° to cKir°, and put° Rezin° to death°.

Damascus Falls

10 ¶ Now King° Ahaz° went° to Damascus° to meet° aTiglath-pileser° king° of Assyria°, and saw° the altar° which° [was] at Damascus°; and King° Ahaz° sent° to bUrijah° the priest° the Ipattern° of the altar° and its model°, according to all° its workmanship°. 11 So Urijah° the priest° built° an altar°; according to all° that King° Ahaz° had sent° from Damascus°, thus° Urijah° the priest° made° [it], Ibefore° the coming° of King° Ahaz° from Damascus°. 12 When the king° came° from Damascus°, the king° saw° the altar°; then athe king° approached° the altar° and Iwent° up to it, 13 and Iburned° his burnt° offering° and his meal° offering°, and poured° his drink° offering° and sprinkled° the blood° of his peace° offerings° on the altar°. 14 aThe bronze° altar°, which° [was] before° the LORD°, Ihe brought° from the front° of the house°, from between° b[his] altar° and the house° of the LORD°, and he put° it on the north° side° of [his] altar°. 15 Then King° Ahaz° Icommanded° Urijah° the priest°, saying°, “Upon the great° altar° IIburn° athe morning° burnt° offering° and the evening° meal° offering° and the king’s° burnt° offering° and his meal° offering°, with the burnt° offering° of all° the people° of the land° and their meal° offering° and their drink° offerings°; and sprinkle° on it all° the blood° of the burnt° offering° and all° the blood° of the sacrifice°. But bthe bronze° altar° shall be for me to inquire° [by].” 16 So Urijah° the priest° did° according to all° that King° Ahaz° commanded°.

17 ¶ Then King° Ahaz° acut° off° the borders° of the stands°, and removed° the laver° from them; he also btook° down° the sea° from the bronze° oxen° which° were under° it and put° it on a pavement° of stone°. 18 The covered° way° for the sabbath° which° they had built° in the house°, and the outer° entry° of the king°, he removed° from the house° of the LORD° because°° of the king° of Assyria°.

19 Now the rest° of the acts° of Ahaz° which° he did°, are they not written° ain the Book° of the Chronicles°° of the Kings° of Judah°? 20 So aAhaz° slept° with his fathers°, and bwas buried° with his fathers° in the city° of David°; and his son° Hezekiah° reigned° in his place°.

Ahaz his wicked reign.

Ahaz assailed by Rezin and Pekah, hireth Tiglath-pileser against them.

5 ¶ Then² Rezinº kingº of Syriaº and Pekahº sonº of Remaliahº kingº of Israelº came upºª to Jerusalemº to war:º and they besiegedºª² Ahaz,º but couldºª not² overcomeºª [him]. 6 At that² timeº Rezinº kingº of Syriaº recoveredºª² Elathº to Syria,ºª¹ and draveºª² the Jewsº from Elath:º² and the Syriansº cameºª to Elath,º and dweltºª there² unto² this² day.º 7 So Ahazº sentºª messengersº to² Tiglathpileserº kingº of Assyria,º saying,ºª I² [am] thy servantº and thy son:º come up,ºª and saveºª me out of the handº² of the kingº of Syria,º and out of the handº² of the kingº of Israel,º which rise upºª against² me. 8 And Ahazº tookºª² the silverº and goldº that was foundºª in the houseº of the LORD,º and in the treasuresº of the king'sº house,º and sentºª [it for] a presentº to the kingº of Assyria.º 9 And the kingº of Assyriaº hearkenedºª unto² him: for the kingº of Assyriaº went upºª against² Damascus,º and tookºª it, and carried [the people of] it captiveºª to Kir,º and slewºª Rezin.º

Ahaz, sending a pattern of an altar from Damascus to Urijah, diverteth the brasen altar to his own devotion.

10 ¶ And kingº Ahazº went¹ª² to Damascusº to meet¹ª² Tiglathpileserº kingº of Assyria,º and sawºª² an altarº that² [was] at Damascus:º and kingº Ahazº sentºª to² Urijahº the priestº² the fashionº of the altar,º and the patternº of it, according to all² the workmanshipº thereof. 11 And Urijahº the priestº builtºª² an altarº according to all² that² kingº Ahazº had sentºª from Damascus:º² so² Urijahº the priestº madeºª [it] against² kingº Ahazº cameºª from Damascus.º² 12 And when the kingº was comeºª from Damascus,º² the kingº sawºª² the altar:º and the kingº approachedºª to² the altar,º and offeredºª thereon.² 13 And he burntºª² his burnt offeringº and his meat offering,º and pouredºª² his drink offering,º and sprinkledºª² the bloodº of his² peace offerings,º upon² the altar.º 14 And he broughtºª also the brasenº altar,º which² [was] beforeº the LORD,º from²² the forefrontº of the house,º from between²² the altarº and the houseº of the LORD,º and putºª it on² the northº sideº of the altar.º 15 And kingº Ahazº commandedºª² Urijahº the priest,º saying,ºª Upon² the greatº altarº burnºª² the morningº burnt offering,º and the eveningº meat offering,º and the king'sº burnt sacrifice,º and his meat offering,º with the burnt offeringº of all² the peopleº of the land,º and their meat offering,º and their drink offerings;º and sprinkleºª upon² it all² the bloodº of the burnt offering,º and all² the bloodº of the sacrifice:º and the brasenº altarº shall be² for me to enquireºª [by]. 16 Thus didºª Urijahº the priest,º according to all² that² kingº Ahazº commanded.ºª

17 ¶ And kingº Ahazº cut offºª² the bordersº of the bases,º and removedºª the laverº from off²² them; and took downºª the seaº from off²² the brasenº oxenº that² [were] under² it, and putºª it upon² a pavementº of stones.º 18 And the covertºª for the sabbathº that² they had builtºª in the house,º and the king'sº entryº without,º turnedºª he from the houseº of the LORDº forº² the kingº of Assyria.º
