1aIf° there is a dispute° between° men° and they go° to Icourt°, and IIthe judges° decide° their case, band they justify° the righteous° and condemn° the wicked°, 2 then it shall be if° the wicked° man° Iadeserves° to be beaten°, the judge° shall then make him lie° down° and be beaten° in his presence° with the number° of stripes according° to his IIguilt°. 3 aHe may beat° him forty° times° [but] no° more°, so° that he does not beat° him with many° more° stripes° than° these° and your brother° is not bdegraded° in your eyes°.

4 ¶ “aYou shall not muzzle° the ox° while he is threshing°.

5 ¶ “When° brothers° live° together° and one° of them dies° and has° no° son°, the wife° of the deceased° shall not be [married] outside° [the family] to a strange° man°. aHer husband’s° brother° shall go° in to her and take° her to himself as wife° and perform° the duty° of a husband’s° brother° to her. 6 It shall be that the firstborn° whom° she bears° shall Iassume° the name° of his dead° brother°, so that ahis name° will not be blotted° out from Israel°. 7 aBut if° the man° does not desire° to take° his brother’s° wife°, then his brother’s° wife° shall go° up to the gate° to the elders° and say°, ‘My husband’s° brother° refuses° to establish° a name° for his brother° in Israel°; he is not willing° to perform° the duty° of a husband’s° brother° to me.’ 8 Then the elders° of his city° shall summon° him and speak° to him. And [if] he persists° and says°, ‘I do not desire° to take° her,’ 9 athen his brother’s° wife° shall come° to him in the sight° of the elders°, and pull° his sandal° off°° his foot° and bspit° in his face°; and she shall Ideclare°°, ‘Thus° it is done° to the man° who° does not build° up his brother’s° house°.’ 10 In Israel° his name° shall be called°, ‘The house° of him whose sandal° is removed°.’

Of raising seed unto a brother.

5 ¶ If² brethrenº dwellºª together,º and oneº of² them die,ºª and have no² child,º the wifeº of the deadºª shall not² marry² withoutº unto a stranger:ººª her husband's brotherº shall go inºª unto² her, and takeºª her to him to wife,º and perform the duty of an husband's brotherºª unto her. 6 And it shall be,² [that] the firstbornº which² she bearethºª shall succeedºª in² the nameº of his brotherº [which is] dead,ºª that his nameº be not² put outºª of Israel.º² 7 And if² the manº likeºª not² to takeºª² his brother's wife,º then let his brother's wifeº go upºª to the gateº unto² the elders,º and say,ºª My husband's brotherº refusethºª to raise upºª unto his brotherº a nameº in Israel,º he willºª not² perform the duty of my husband's brother.ºª 8 Then the eldersº of his cityº shall callºª him, and speakºª unto² him: and [if] he standºª [to it], and say,ºª I likeºª not² to takeºª her; 9 Then shall his brother's wifeº comeºª unto² him in the presenceº of the elders,º and looseºª his shoeº from off²² his foot,º and spitºª in his face,º and shall answerºª and say,ºª So² shall it be doneºª unto that manº that² will not² build upºª² his brother'sº house.º 10 And his nameº shall be calledºª in Israel,º The houseº of him that hath his shoeº loosed.ºª

Of the immodest woman.

11 ¶ When² men¹² striveºª togetherº one² with another,º¹ and the wifeº of the oneº draweth nearºª for to deliverºª² her husbandº out of the handº² of him that smitethºª him, and putteth forthºª her hand,º and takethºª him by the secrets:º 12 Then thou shalt cut offºª² her hand,º thine eyeº shall not² pityºª [her].
