Sennacherib Invades Judah

1 aNow in the fourteenth°° year° of King° Hezekiah°, bSennacherib° king° of Assyria° came° up against° all° the fortified° cities° of Judah° and seized° them. 2 And the aking° of Assyria° sent° Rabshakeh° from Lachish° to Jerusalem° to King° Hezekiah° with a large° army°. And he stood° by the bconduit° of the upper° pool° on the highway° of the Ifuller’s° field°. 3 Then aEliakim° the son° of Hilkiah°, who° was over° the household°, and bShebna° the scribe°, and Joah° the son° of Asaph°, the recorder°, came° out to him.

4 ¶ Then aRabshakeh° said° to them, “Say° now° to Hezekiah°, ‘Thus° says° the great° king°, the king° of Assyria°, “What° is this° confidence° that you Ihave°? 5 I say°, ‘Your counsel° and strength° for the war° are only° Iempty° words°.’ Now° on whom° do you rely°, that ayou have rebelled° against me? 6 Behold°, you rely° on the astaff° of this° crushed° reed°, [even] on Egypt°, on which° if a man° leans°, it will go° into his Ihand° and pierce° it. bSo° is Pharaoh° king° of Egypt° to all° who rely° on him. 7 But if° you say° to me, ‘We trust° in the LORD° our God°,’ is it not He awhose° high° places° and whose altars° Hezekiah° has taken° away° and has said° to Judah° and to Jerusalem°, ‘You shall worship° before° this° altar°’? 8 Now° therefore, Icome° make° a bargain° with my master° the king° of Assyria°, and I will give° you two thousand° horses°, if° you are able° on your part to set° riders° on them. 9 How° then can you Irepulse°° one° IIofficial° of the least° of my master’s° servants° and IIIarely° on Egypt° for chariots° and for horsemen°? 10 Have I now° come° up Iwithout° the LORDS° approval against° this° land° to destroy° it? aThe LORD° said° to me, ‘Go° up against° this° land° and destroy° it.’”’”

11 ¶ Then Eliakim° and Shebna° and Joah° said° to Rabshakeh°, “Speak° now° to your servants° in aAramaic°, for we Iunderstand° [it]; and do not speak° with us in IIbJudean° in the hearing° of the people° who° are on the wall°.” 12 But Rabshakeh° said°, “Has my master° sent° me only to your master° and to you to speak° these° words°, [and] not to the men° who sit° on the wall°, [doomed] to eat° their own dung° and drink° their own urine° with you?”

13 ¶ Then Rabshakeh° stood° and acried° with a loud° voice° in Judean° and said°, “Hear° the words° of the great° king°, the king° of Assyria°. 14 Thus° says° the king°, ‘Do not let Hezekiah° adeceive° you, for he will not be able° to deliver° you; 15 nor° let Hezekiah° make you atrust° in the LORD°, saying°, “The LORD° will surely° deliver° us, this° city° will not be given° into the hand° of the king° of Assyria°.” 16 Do not listen° to Hezekiah°,’ for thus° says° the king° of Assyria°, ‘IMake° your peace° with me and come° out to me, and eat° each° of his avine° and each° of his fig° tree° and drink° each° of the bwaters° of his own cistern°, 17 until° I come° and take° you away to a land° like your own land°, a land° of grain° and new° wine°, a land° of bread° and vineyards°. 18 [Beware] that Hezekiah° does not mislead° you, saying°, “aThe LORD° will deliver° us.” Has any° one° of the gods° of the nations° delivered° his land° from the hand° of the king° of Assyria°? 19 Where° are the gods° of aHamath° and Arpad°? Where° are the gods° of aSepharvaim°? And when° have they bdelivered° Samaria° from my hand°? 20 Who° among all° the agods° of these° lands° have delivered° their land° from my hand°, that the bLORD° would deliver° Jerusalem° from my hand°?’”

Rabshekeh, sent by Sennacherib, by blasphemous persuasions soliciteth the people to revolt.

4 ¶ And Rabshakehº saidºª unto² them, Sayºª ye now² to² Hezekiah,º Thus² saithºª the greatº king,º the kingº of Assyria,º What² confidenceº [is] this² wherein² thou trustest?ºª 5 I say,ºª [sayest thou], (but² [they are but] vainº words)º [I have] counselº and strengthº for war:º now² on² whom² dost thou trust,ºª that² thou rebellestºª against me? 6 Lo,² thou trustestºª in² the staffº of this² brokenºª reed,º on² Egypt;º whereon²² if a manº lean,ºª it will goºª into his hand,º and pierceºª it: so² [is] Pharaohº kingº of Egyptº to all² that trustºª in² him. 7 But² if thou sayºª to² me, We trustºª in² the LORDº our God:º [is it] not² he,²² whose² high placesº and whose altarsº Hezekiahº hath taken away,ºª and saidºª to Judahº and to Jerusalem,º Ye shall worshipºª beforeº this² altar?º 8 Now² therefore give pledges,¹ª² I pray thee,² to² my masterº the kingº of Assyria,º and I will giveºª thee two thousandº horses,º if² thou be ableºª on thy part to setºª ridersºª upon² them. 9 How² then wilt thou turn awayºª² the faceº of oneº captainº of the leastº of my master'sº servants,º and put thy trustºª on² Egyptº for chariotsº and for horsemen?º 10 And am I now² come upºª withoutº² the LORDº against² this² landº to destroyºª it? the LORDº saidºª unto² me, Go upºª against² this² land,º and destroyºª it.

11 ¶ Then saidºª Eliakimº and Shebnaº and Joahº unto² Rabshakeh,º Speak,ºª I pray thee,² unto² thy servantsº in the Syrian language;º for² we² understandºª [it]: and speakºª not² to² us in the Jews' language,º in the earsº of the peopleº that² [are] on² the wall.º

12 ¶ But Rabshakehº said,ºª Hath my masterº sentºª me to² thy masterº and to² thee to speakºª² these² words?º [hath he] not² [sent me] to² the men¹² that sitºª upon² the wall,º that they may eatºª² their own dung,º¹ª and drinkºª² their own pissººª¹ with² you? 13 Then Rabshakehº stood,ºª and criedºª with a loudº voiceº in the Jews' language,º and said,ºª Hearºª ye² the wordsº of the greatº king,º the kingº of Assyria.º 14 Thus² saithºª the king,º Let not² Hezekiahº deceiveºª you: for² he shall not² be ableºª to deliverºª you. 15 Neither² let Hezekiahº make you trustºª² in² the LORD,º saying,ºª The LORDº will surely¹ª deliverºª us: this² cityº shall not² be deliveredºª into the handº of the kingº of Assyria.º 16 Hearkenºª not² to² Hezekiah:º for² thus² saithºª the kingº of Assyria,º Makeºª [an agreement] with² me [by] a present,º and come outºª to² me: and eatºª ye every oneº of his vine,º and every oneº of his fig tree,º and drinkºª ye every oneº the watersº of his own cistern;º 17 Until² I comeºª and take you awayºª² to² a landº like your own land,º a landº of cornº and wine,º a landº of breadº and vineyards.º 18 [Beware] lest² Hezekiahº persuadeºª you, saying,ºª The LORDº will deliverºª us. Hath anyº of the godsº of the nationsº deliveredºª² his landº out of the handº² of the kingº of Assyria?º 19 Where² [are] the godsº of Hamathº and Arphad?º where² [are] the godsº of Sepharvaim?º and² have they deliveredºª² Samariaº out of my hand?º² 20 Who² [are they] among all² the godsº of these² lands,º that² have deliveredºª² their landº out of my hand,º² that² the LORDº should deliverºª² Jerusalemº out of my hand?º² 21 But they held their peace,ºª and answeredºª him not² a word:º for² the king'sº commandmentº was, saying,ºª Answerºª him not.²
