The Banquets of the King

1 Now it took° place° in the days° of aAhasuerus°, the Ahasuerus° who reigned° bfrom India° to IEthiopia° over c127°°° provinces°, 2 in those° days° as King° Ahasuerus° asat° on his royal° throne° which° [was] at the citadel° in bSusa°, 3 in the third° year° of his reign° ahe gave° a banquet° for all° his princes° and attendants°, the army° [officers] of Persia° and Media°, the nobles° and the princes° of his provinces° being in his presence°. 4 IAnd he displayed° the riches° of his royal° glory° and the splendor° of his great° majesty° for many° days°, 180°° days°.

5 ¶ When these° days° were completed°, the king° gave° a banquet° lasting seven° days° for all° the people° who were present° at the citadel° in Susa°, from the greatest° to the least°, in the court° of athe garden° of the king’s° palace°. 6 [There were hangings of] fine° white° and violet° linen° held° by cords° of fine° purple° linen° on silver° rings° and marble° columns°, [and] acouches° of gold° and silver° on a mosaic° pavement° of porphyry°, marble°, mother-of-pearl° and precious° stones°. 7 Drinks° were served° in golden° vessels° of various° kinds°, and the royal° wine° was plentiful° aaccording to the king’s° Ibounty°. 8 The drinking° was [done] according to the law°, there° was no° compulsion°, for so° the king° had given° orders° to each° official° of his household° that he should do° according to the desires° of each° person°. 9 Queen° Vashti° also° gave° a banquet° for the women° in the Ipalace° which° belonged to King° Ahasuerus°.

Queen Vashti’s Refusal

10 ¶ On the seventh° day°, when the heart° of the king° was amerry° with wine°, he commanded° Mehuman°, Biztha°, Harbona°, Bigtha°, Abagtha°, Zethar° and Carkas°, the seven° eunuchs° who served° in the presence° of King° Ahasuerus°, 11 to bring° Queen° Vashti° before° the king° with [her] royal° acrown° in order to display° her beauty° to the people° and the princes°, for she was beautiful°. 12 But Queen° Vashti° refused° to come° at the king’s° command° delivered° by the eunuchs°. Then the king° became° very° angry° and his wrath° burned° within him.

13 ¶ Then the king° said° to athe wise° men° bwho understood° the times°—for it was the custom° of the king° so° [to speak] before° all° who knew° law° and justice° 14 and were close° to him: Carshena°, Shethar°, Admatha°, Tarshish°, Meres°, Marsena° and Memucan°, the seven° princes° of Persia° and Media° awho Ihad access° to the king’s° presence° and sat° in the first° place in the kingdom°15 “According to law°, what° is to be done° with Queen° Vashti°, because°° she did not Iobey° the command° of King° Ahasuerus° [delivered] by the eunuchs°?” 16 In the presence° of the king° and the princes°, Memucan° said°, “Queen° Vashti° has wronged° not only° the king° but [also] all° the princes° and all° the peoples° who° are in all° the provinces° of King° Ahasuerus°. 17 For the queen’s° conduct° will Ibecome° known° to all° the women° causing them IIto look° with contempt° on their husbands° by saying°, ‘King° Ahasuerus° commanded° Queen° Vashti° to be brought° in to his presence°, but she did not come°.’ 18 This° day° the ladies° of Persia° and Media° who° have heard° of the queen’s° conduct° will speak° in [the same way] to all° the king’s° princes°, and there will be plenty° of contempt° and anger°. 19 If° it pleases° the king°, let a royal° Iedict° be issued° by him and let it be written° in the laws° of Persia° and Media° so athat it cannot° IIbe repealed°, that Vashti° may no° longer come° into the presence° of King° Ahasuerus°, and let the king° give° her royal° position° to IIIanother° who is more° worthy° than° she. 20 When the king’s° edict° which° he will make° is heard° throughout all° his kingdom°, Igreat° as it is, then aall° women° will give° honor° to their husbands°, great° and small°.”

Ahasuerus maketh royal feasts.

1 ¶ Now it came to pass² in the daysº of Ahasuerus,º (this² [is] Ahasuerusº which reigned,ºª from Indiaº² even unto² Ethiopia,º [over] an hundredº and sevenº and twentyº provinces:)º 2 [That] in those² days,º when the kingº Ahasuerusº satºª on² the throneº of his kingdom,º which² [was] in Shushanº the palace,º 3 In the thirdº yearº of his reign,ºª he madeºª a feastº unto all² his princesº and his servants;º the powerº of Persiaº and Media,º the noblesº and princesº of the provinces,º [being] beforeº him: 4 When he shewedºª² the richesº of his gloriousº kingdomº and the honourº of his excellentº majestyº manyº days,º [even] an hundredº and fourscoreº days.º 5 And when these² daysº were expired,ºª the kingº madeºª a feastº unto all² the peopleº that were presentºª in Shushanº the palace,º both unto greatº² and small,º sevenº days,º in the courtº of the gardenº of the king'sº palace;º 6 [Where were] white,º green,º and blue,º [hangings], fastenedºª with cordsº of fine linenº and purpleº to² silverº ringsº and pillarsº of marble:º the bedsº [were of] goldº and silver,º upon² a pavementº of red,º and blue,¹² and white,º and black,¹ marble.¹² 7 And they gave [them] drinkºª in vesselsº of gold,º (the vesselsº being diverseºª one from another,)º² and royalº wineº in abundance,º according to the stateº of the king.º 8 And the drinkingº [was] according to the law;º none² did compel:ºª for² so² the kingº had appointedºª to² all² the officersº of his house,º that they should doºª according to every man'sº pleasure.º 9 Also² Vashtiº the queenº madeºª a feastº for the womenº [in] the royalº houseº which² [belonged] to kingº Ahasuerus.º

Vashti, sent for, refuseth to come.

10 ¶ On the seventhº day,º when the heartº of the kingº was merry¹² with wine,º he commandedºª Mehuman,º Biztha,º Harbona,º Bigtha,º and Abagtha,º Zethar,º and Carcas,º the sevenº chamberlainsº that servedºª² in the presenceº of Ahasuerusº the king,º 11 To bringºª² Vashtiº the queenº beforeº the kingº with the crownº royal,º to shewºª the peopleº and the princesº² her beauty:º for² she² [was] fairº to look on.º 12 But the queenº Vashtiº refusedºª to comeºª at the king'sº commandmentº byº² [his] chamberlains:º therefore was the kingº veryº wroth,ºª and his angerº burnedºª in him.

Ahasuerus, by the counsel of Memucan, maketh the decree of man's sovereignty.

13 ¶ Then the kingº saidºª to the wise men,º which knewºª the times,º (for² so² [was] the king'sº mannerº towardº all² that knewºª lawº and judgment:º 14 And the nextº unto² him [was] Carshena,º Shethar,º Admatha,º Tarshish,º Meres,º Marsena,º [and] Memucan,º the sevenº princesº of Persiaº and Media,º which sawºª the king'sº face,º [and] which satºª the firstº in the kingdom;)º 15 What² shall we doºª unto the queenº Vashtiº according to law,º because²² she hath not² performedºª² the commandmentº of the kingº Ahasuerusº byº the chamberlains?º 16 And Memucanº answeredºª beforeº the kingº and the princes,º Vashtiº the queenº hath not² done wrongºª to² the kingº only,² but² also to² all² the princes,º and to² all² the peopleº that² [are] in all² the provincesº of the kingº Ahasuerus.º 17 For² [this] deedº of the queenº shall come abroadºª unto² all² women,º so that they shall despiseºª their husbandsº in their eyes,º when it shall be reported,ºª The kingº Ahasuerusº commandedºª² Vashtiº the queenº to be brought inºª beforeº him, but she cameºª not.² 18 [Likewise] shall the ladiesº of Persiaº and Mediaº sayºª this² dayº unto all² the king'sº princes,º which² have heard¹ª of²² the deedº of the queen.º Thus [shall there arise] too muchº contemptº and wrath.º 19 If² it pleaseºª² the king,º let there goºª a royalº commandmentº from²² him,¹ and let it be writtenºª among the lawsº of the Persiansº and the Medes,º that it be not² altered,ºª That² Vashtiº comeºª no² more beforeº kingº Ahasuerus;º and let the kingº giveºª her royal estateº unto anotherº that is betterº than² she. 20 And when the king'sº decreeº which² he shall makeºª shall be publishedºª throughout all² his empire,º (for² it² is great,)º all² the wivesº shall giveºª to their husbandsº honour,º both to greatº² and small.º 21 And the sayingº pleasedººª the kingº and the princes;º and the kingº didºª according to the wordº of Memucan:º 22 For he sentºª lettersº into² all² the king'sº provinces,º into² every provinceº according to the writingº thereof, and to² every peopleº after their language,º that every² manº should² bear ruleºª in his own house,º and that [it] should be publishedºª according to the languageº of every people.º
