Hebrews 7:26
_ _ such as is above described. The oldest manuscripts read, “also.” “For to US (as sinners; emphatical) there was also becoming (besides the other excellencies of our High Priest) such an High Priest.”
_ _ holy “pious” (a distinct Greek word from that for holy, which latter implies consecration) towards God; perfectly answering God’s will in reverent piety (Psalms 16:10).
_ _ harmless literally, “free from evil” and guile, in relation to Himself.
_ _ undefiled not defiled by stain contracted from others, in relation to men. Temptation, to which He was exposed, left no trace of evil in Him.
_ _ separate rather, “separated from sinners,” namely, in His heavenly state as our High Priest above, after He had been parted from the earth, as the Levitical high priest was separated from the people in the sanctuary (whence he was not to go out), Leviticus 21:12. Though justifying through faith the ungodly, He hath no contact with them as such. He is lifted above our sinful community, being “made higher than the heavens,” at the same time that He makes believers as such (not as sinners), “to sit together (with Him) in heavenly places” (Ephesians 2:6). Just as Moses on the mount was separated from and above the people, and alone with God. This proves Jesus is God. “Though innumerable lies have been forged against the venerable Jesus, none dared to charge Him with any intemperance” [Origen].
_ _ made Jesus was higher before (John 17:5), and as the God-MAN was made so by the Father after His humiliation (compare Hebrews 1:4).
_ _ higher than the heavens for “He passed through [so the Greek] the heavens” (Hebrews 4:14). |
Hebrews 7:26
For such an high priest suited us Unholy, mischievous, defiled sinners: a blessed paradox! Holy With respect to God. Harmless With respect to men. Undefiled With any sin in himself. Separated from sinners As well as free from sin. And so he was when he left the world. And made Even in his human nature. Higher than the heavens And all their inhabitants. |
Hebrews 7:26
(12) For such an high priest became us, [who is] holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;
(12) Another argument: There are required in an high priest innocency and perfect pureness, which may separate him from sinners, for whom he offers. The Levitical high priests are not found to be such, for they offer first for their own sins: but only Christ is such a one, and therefore the only true High Priest. |
- such:
Hebrews 7:11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need [was there] that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron? Hebrews 8:1 Now of the things which we have spoken [this is] the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; Hebrews 9:23-26 [It was] therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. ... For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. Hebrews 10:11-22 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: ... Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

- became:
Hebrews 2:10 For it became him, for whom [are] all things, and by whom [are] all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. Luke 24:26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? Luke 24:46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:

Hebrews 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as [we are, yet] without sin. Hebrews 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? Exodus 28:36 And thou shalt make a plate [of] pure gold, and grave upon it, [like] the engravings of a signet, HOLINESS TO THE LORD. Isaiah 53:9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither [was any] deceit in his mouth. Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. Luke 23:22 And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let [him] go. Luke 23:41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. Luke 23:47 Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man. John 8:29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him. John 14:30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. Acts 3:14 But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; Acts 4:27 For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, 2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him [to be] sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. 1 Peter 1:19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 1 Peter 2:22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: 1 John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for [the sins of] the whole world. 1 John 3:5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. Revelation 3:7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;
