Jeremiah 26:9
Why hast thou prophesied in the name of the LORD, saying, (f) This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate without an inhabitant? And all the people were gathered against Jeremiah in the house of the LORD.
(f) Because of God's promises to the temple, (Psalms 132:14) that he would forever remain there, hypocrites thought this temple could never perish and therefore thought it blasphemy to speak against it, (Matthew 26:61; Acts 6:13) not considering that this was meant of the Church where God will remain forever. |
- Why:
2 Chronicles 25:16 And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that [the king] said unto him, Art thou made of the king's counsel? forbear; why shouldest thou be smitten? Then the prophet forbare, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel. Isaiah 29:21 That make a man an offender for a word, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just for a thing of nought. Isaiah 30:9-11 That this [is] a rebellious people, lying children, children [that] will not hear the law of the LORD: ... Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us. Amos 5:10 They hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly. Amos 7:10-13 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words. ... But prophesy not again any more at Bethel: for it [is] the king's chapel, and it [is] the king's court. Micah 2:6 Prophesy ye not, [say they to them that] prophesy: they shall not prophesy to them, [that] they shall not take shame. Matthew 21:23 And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority? Acts 4:17-19 But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name. ... But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye. Acts 5:28 Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us. Acts 6:14 For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us.

- And all:
Matthew 27:20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. Mark 15:11 But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them. Acts 13:50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts. Acts 16:19-22 And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew [them] into the marketplace unto the rulers, ... And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat [them]. Acts 17:5-8 But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. ... And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things. Acts 19:24-32 For a certain [man] named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen; ... Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together. Acts 21:30 And all the city was moved, and the people ran together: and they took Paul, and drew him out of the temple: and forthwith the doors were shut. Acts 22:22 And they gave him audience unto this word, and [then] lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a [fellow] from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.
