Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary

2 Corinthians 13:5

_ _ ExamineGreek, “Try (make trial of) yourselves.”

_ _ prove your own selves — This should be your first aim, rather than “seeking a proof of Christ speaking in me” (2 Corinthians 13:3).

_ _ your own selves — I need not speak much in proof of Christ being in me, your minister (2 Corinthians 13:3), for if ye try your own selves ye will see that Christ is also in you [Chrysostom], (Romans 8:10). Finding Christ dwelling in yourselves by faith, ye may well believe that He speaks in me, by whose ministry ye have received this faith [Estius]. To doubt it would be the sin of Israel, who, after so many miracles and experimental proofs of God’s presence, still cried (Exodus 17:7), “Is the Lord among us or not?” (Compare Mark 8:11).

_ _ except ye be reprobates — The Greek softens the expression, “somewhat reprobates,” that is, not abiding theproof” (alluding to the same word in the context); failing when tested. Image from metals (Jeremiah 6:30; Daniel 5:27; Romans 1:28).

Matthew Henry's Commentary

See commentary on 2 Corinthians 13:1-6.

John Wesley's Explanatory Notes

2 Corinthians 13:5

Prove yourselves — Whether ye are such as can, or such as cannot, bear the test — This is the proper meaning of the word which we translate, reprobates. Know ye not yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you — All Christian believers know this, by the witness and by the fruit of his Spirit. Some translate the words, Jesus Christ is among you; that is, in the church of Corinth; and understand them of the miraculous gifts and the power of Christ which attended the censures of the apostle.

Geneva Bible Translation Notes

2 Corinthians 13:5

(2) Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

(2) He confirms that which he spoke about the power of God appearing in his ministry, and he gathers by the mutual relation between the people's faith and the minister's preaching, that they must either reverence his apostleship, upon whose doctrine their faith is grounded, or they must condemn themselves of infidelity, and must confess themselves not to be of Christ's body.
