Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary

Isaiah 49:23

_ _ lick ... dust — that is, kiss thy feet in token of humble submission.

_ _ for they ... not ... ashamed ... wait for me — The restoration of Israel shall be in answer to their prayerful waiting on the Lord (Isaiah 30:18, Isaiah 30:19; Psalms 102:16, Psalms 102:17; Zechariah 12:10; Zechariah 14:3).

Matthew Henry's Commentary

See commentary on Isaiah 49:18-23.

John Wesley's Explanatory Notes

Isaiah 49:23

Lick the dust — They shall highly reverence and honour thee. These expressions are borrowed from the practice of the eastern people, who bowed so low as to touch the ground. Ashamed — Their expectations shall not be disappointed.
