Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary

Isaiah 14:11

_ _ “Pomp” and music, the accompaniment of Babylon’s former feastings (Isaiah 5:12; Isaiah 24:8), give place to the corruption and the stillness of the grave (Ezekiel 32:27).

_ _ worm — that is bred in putridity.

_ _ worms — properly those from which the crimson dye is obtained. Appropriate here; instead of the crimson coverlet, over thee shall be “worms.” Instead of the gorgeous couch, “under thee” shall be the maggot.

Matthew Henry's Commentary

See commentary on Isaiah 14:4-23.

John Wesley's Explanatory Notes

Isaiah 14:11

Thy pomp — All thy glory is buried with thee. Viols — All thy musical instruments, which were much used in Babylon, and were doubtless used in Belshazzar's solemn feasts, Daniel 5:1, at which time the city was taken; to which possibly the prophet here alludes. The worm — Instead of those stately carpets upon which thou didst frequently tread.

Geneva Bible Translation Notes
